After getting your first good telephoto lens, it's only a matter of time before you decide to point it at the moon. But for most first-timers it turns out be harder than expected and photos come out horribly exposed. In this video I explain why and show you how I shot a recent 'super-moon' and show you the results, including camera settings. Shot on the Panasonic Lumix G9 with the Leica/Panasonic 100-400mm lens, BUT you could use the same techniques for similar results on any DSLR camera. Enjoy the video and be sure to SUBSCRIBE for more videos from my world of photography.

Thanks a lot. I was getting the first images you showed until I watched your video. Used your settings and got perfectly good images with a 100 300. Clearly lots of ways to do it, but yours worked for me and gave me ammo to play on my own 👍

A few years ago I regooogled the question of photographing the moon and it seemed incredibly difficult. Then I grabbed my OM-D E-M5, dressed it with my 75-300 chose spot metering, aperture priority, probably wide open, pointed it at the moon, , job done. As you noted, the moon is quite bright. At 300mm on mirrorless four thirds, the moon is also quite large, entirely big enough to meter. And about the right luminance to be read correctly by camera meters. I happen to have a 150-600 and an adaptor. I intend to give that a go, perhaps on my G9. I also shot a timelapse a few days ago, about 50% moon, but I've not had a proper look yet. Next, photos in the Peter Lik style.

OK watching the comments it looks like a lot of people have different ideas which is great, in modern photography there is always more than one way to achieve a result. But my main aim was to produce a video using old-fashioned camera technique that people could use no matter what kind of camera they have...not to explore special features that are only available on one camera or another.

There is a technique called Loony 11 which works great Change to M (Manual) focus to infinity the moons about 300,000km + away at any given time & set your f stop to f11 and then set your ISO & shutter speed to the same number eg: ISO-100 shutter 1/100 sec or another example if you want to hand hold try ISO-500 & shutter to 1/500 sec It's amazing how well this simple technique works Go on try it, no fancy settings just the loony 11, daytime moons are a bit different but you will soon begin to work out what works best for you and your camera lens combination I personally shoot with a SONY A6000 body and a 40+ year old Soligor 400mm telephoto with a Minolta MD to SONY E mount adaptor & take over 90% of my moon shots hand held.

f/11 might be too much on m43 with the smaller sensor. On a full frame it makes sense though. Diffraction creeps in much earlier, and f/8 is bordering on the diffraction territory already.

I've only taken one really good shot of a Blue Moon and that was with a Canon 7D MK11 and a 400 f2.8 lens with a 1.5x converter! The fact that you have produced such a great image with just using the G9 is amazing. Having just brought one the G9, I'll give it a go.However, I am learning all about the settings which I am very rusty with. I have switched to entirely manual and raw files instead of Aperture Priority and Raw files. Thank you for your very helpful videos.!!!

'Just the G9?' I think it's an amazing camera and hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I do.

@@naturesimagephotography Well, I didn't at first but after watching all your videos regarding it, I am feeling much more confident and producing some pleasing images. Thank you so much!!

I've taken incredible moon pictures with my fz80 & I like a crescent moon or half moon the best. I just ordered a G9 with the 100-300mm zoom & hopefully I can still get some decent shots although I know it won't zoom in as much as my fz80 will.

Thanks for the video. You could also just spot meter on the moon and ae lock.

Yes there are definitely different ways of doing things. I don't demonstrate all the ways it CAN be done, just the way I do it. And as I explained in the video, with constant preview engaged I don't see any reason to change my preferred metering option.

I had similar results with my G9 and the Lumix 100-300 lens. I also tried it with 2x and 4x digital zoom and it gets a lot closer. I also have a 500mm lens with a 2x converter and when using it I cannot get the whole moon into the frame!

For great moon pics get a Nikon p900...👍 near foolproof on auto moon mode or play around in manual for fun. Also has a far better reach with up to 2000mm zoom although I find 1800mm the best.

how about a 80 megapixel and crop in

I saw another video where someone tried it. HiRes doesn't work well because the moon is moving fast enough to blur out the HiRes mode.
@saurabh459
@saurabh459 3 года назад
why not use the high res mode?
@SzymonPytel
@SzymonPytel 4 года назад
Hmmm what if you try high Res mode? I mean hmmm I know moon is moving. But if you could apply enough high shutter speed it could work ;) Raising iso in this mode should not be a problem because of stacking noise is much lower. If I had camera and that lens I would test it, hehe but I don't have it haha

Hi Res on the G9 cannot be used for the moon, unless you use a tracking mount the apparent motion is too fast. You can however take multiple images and stack them in software, this is a common technique.

Super video., Andrew. I have a g9 question. I use the Panny Leica 12-60 and find that images are soft until I get to 25mm, no matter the shutter speed or aperture setting. Am I doing something wrong or is that a characteristic of the lens? Thanks!
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 4 года назад
Stuart, I have only borrowed that lens for a week or so, so I haven't spent much time with it. However I didn't have a problem with it. In fact I used it when making one of my videos about the image stabiliser and was able to get decent shots hand-held, even at very slow shutter speeds. But 'sharpness' means different things to different people. Are they really soft-soft that other people would notice, or is it the type of softness you only see when you blow the photo up to 100% and examine every pixel? Also you mentioned Aperture and Shutter Speed but not ISO. Do you have your ISO set to auto? High ISO can give you a fast shutter speed but still produce photos that look soft due to noise.? And while I think of it, do you have the dual IS turned ON when shooting hand-held, and OFF when on a tripod?

How do you find this lens at full zoom? Some review's I've read say it loses sharpness the more you zoom and some say it doesn't. What do you think?
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 4 года назад
I find it sharp throughout the range. The thing about full zoom is a view generally held about most big lenses, i.e. they are best when not zoomed all the way out. But I have been totally satisfied with shots taken at 400mm.

Did you happen to take one of the Super red Moon the other night?

Yes...I wasn't going to bother but my daughter asked me to. Easy enough but no different to millions of other shots taken by people all over.
