Is Pukei Pukei as bizarre in behaviour as he is in appearance? It certainly seems so! But as well as being the jungle oddball, he possesses a variety of unique traits and may be more important than he first seems.
And thanks to Aiwass for the footage of Pukei eating!

A behavior that wasn’t mentioned in this vid is Pukei’s apparent knack for “bullying” monsters smaller than it, and I believe that this may be a direct result of being ousted by Rathalos. Being forced to feed on the forest floor puts Pukei in direct contact with other ground foragers like Mosswine, Kestodon, and the occasional passing herd of aptonoth. Although Pukei still has access to fruits and nuts higher than these other monsters could feasibly access, the forced proximity with them makes Pukei ultra-protective of these food sources and so hyper-aggressive towards other herbivores that it previously had little to no contact with.

A good point, and this hostility could indeed be from competition that wasn't there before due to an unideal range shift for pukei thanks to rathalos.

It would explain why they are so aggressive towards the player. They don't seem like the kind of monster that would attack on first sight, so you can imagine my surprise when I first started playing World, walked up to my first Pukei on an expedition because I wanted to get a close look at its fabulous coloration and feathers, only for it to get pissed off once I got within ten feet of it.

When I clicked on this video, I expected a discussion about Pukei-Pukei’s diet, how it incorporates said diet into its primary defense mechanism, and its subsequent importance as a distributor of seeds. I did indeed get a mention of that, but also an in-depth description and hypothesized history of one of the most fascinating behaviors in the avian order. Very well-made video on one of the most charming monsters in the series! A potential origin of Pukei-Pukei's brood parasitism may specifically be another bird wyvern that it shares its habitat with: Kulu-Ya-Ku. Kulu's egg-based diet likely makes nesting challenging for the many egg-laying animals it shares its habitat with, so intra-species brood parasitism may have been a way to prevent Kulu's nest raiding from destroying an entire clutch. Eventually, this likely expanded to inter-species brood parasitism, Pukei potentially even experimenting with brood parasitising Kulu, since Kulu is unlikely to dine on its own nest (however, Kulu's relatively high intelligence may caused this to only be successful briefly, if at all). A thicker egg shell may have also initially been selected for because Kulu would prioritize breaking eggs with more fragile shells. Mernos may have eventually been settled on because its nests are likely high in the canopy, places where Kulu-Ya-Ku cannot readily reach. This may have also led to the speed-laying practice, since Mernos nests may often be on branches or other structures that a Pukei can't safely land on because of its size.

It’s interesting how Rathalos took over the Ancient Forest, throwing Anjanath off its throne and evicting Pukei Pukei from the tree tops, by also (I assume) devouring smaller predators by the looks of it, as always you did an amazing work with this video :D I’m curious of why some large flying Wyverns such as Legiana and Nargacuga have predilection for small prey, specially Legiana when it’s on the HoarFrost Reach, where it feeds upon Anteka and Kortos rather than Popo
@unnaturalhistorychannel

Thank you! And such things will indeed be discussed in their respective videos when I get to those bois. ;)
@victory8928
@victory8928 2 года назад
Well for starters legiana is like a hawk in that aspect they like to handle relatively weak and small prey items that wouldn’t pose much of a problem. They normal hunt the wingdrakes of the coral highlands as well as paloumu while tizi and other ground dwellers are hunted by Shamos and Odogaron (when they climb to the highlands) as well as nami who appears to like to eat primarily smaller prey that they can drag around with their control over water puddles or shock to submission or death. So legiana probably evolved to handle the flying wyverns for that reason to take advantage of a valuable niche. Which then lead to it having a more fragile yet graceful body, so it leads legi to preferring less dangerous and weaker prey like the cortos and anteka which don’t have many defences to counter legi like how legi usually hunts raphs in the open skies and in a manner that shocks and suppresses the raph’s ability to evade capture.

Late reply I know, but I was thinking, what if Pukei-pukei uses its tail as an ovipositor that allows it (or rather her) to reach nests hidden in thick foliage and outside the range of its massive body? The tail definately seems elastic enough to allow the passage of an egg given how it inflates with some of its attacks. The relation with the cave wyverns adds on to this, as Gigginox also lays eggsacks from the tail, so it could be an ancestral common trait.

I've always been intrigued with pukei pukei his design was always so interesting to me plus his fight was kind of fun to me and liked the archer atheistic his armour set had. one thing I'd like to point out is that pukei pukei can be found in very humid desert environments and according to worlds story this was a new behaviour. maybe pukei pukei have begun to move to more arid areas to escape rathalos incursion. their prefered nest animals mernos are found in the wildspire and their common predators like anjanath and rathalos don't frequent arid area's.

i also think this. some of the fanged wyverns, like jagras, dodogama, and girros, are clearly lepidosaurs, while the more mammalian ones you mentioned strike me as synapsids and true mammals. in particular i would suspect magnamalo is close but more basal relative to barioth, having the bony beginnings of what may have become wings in a related lineage. both seem to be mammals and stand out in their respective groupings. i think there are a few wastebasket taxa in monster hunter, and both fanged and flying wyverns are among them.

Okay I know I keep saying this but this was a really really impresive one. I didnt expect much but man did I learn things I didnt expect. Birds living under the rullership of mafia brood parasites,how a single species can massively affect an enviroment with the jays planting half a forest and ofcourse parts of Pukei himself. It been so vital to the forest with the distribution of seeds and helping it grow while Rathalos hunting them results in medows and the costal plains forming,that get replanted by Pukies spreading seeds is a really intrestic back and forth,tho I do wander if the very northen west side of the map that looks to have more rivers if the land there is more rainforest/marshy due to Rathalos not been that present there.But then again the large "sandy beaches" that seem to be on the map might more costal plains as Rathalos make their way up the coast changing the enviroment or it could be something completly difrent Im not sure. As for Pukie I do smile when I think back to him,his colourful,he has a neat early game fight, I got one in MH Stories 2 called Queves and I love him and he got me though some tough fights,Coral Pukie really hits some spots in me cause I find the pink,violet and orange green eyed combo asthetic,tho I strugle with the fight at times. Looking forward to the next one,and Im take a guess and say that Spectral bats will be brought up in that video since they seem to me as the closest we got to the subject of the video. Oh and Adriens cladogram and species names look and sound apsolutly stelar.
@unnaturalhistorychannel

And thank you once again! Brood parasitism is without doubt one of the most fascinating behaviours. The northern parts of the forest are interesting, it could be the different rathalos abundance or more of a swampy bayou like area with the rivers, hard to say. Spectral bats will be among the many included indeed! ;) And Adrian indeed knocked it out of the park.

Pukei Pukei is one of my favorite monster from MHW just for his design perhaps the presence of the rathalos didn’t hinder the pukei in the dispersion of the seeds, but only changed its dispersion mode, from a flyng dispersion like a macaw to a terrestrial dispersion like a cassowary. Also, considering that it is said that Pukei fight back only with monster smaller than himself conferm its evictor behavier. And maybe the reason he nedds to use others nest for his eggs and baby its because Tobi-Kadachi is a small creature hunter, and without the protection of the mernos nest, or even a colony, a baby pukei has less chance to survive

It should be noted that even if Mernos are intelligent enough to be highly trainable, it doesn't mean that protects them from Pukei Pukei. Studies have shown that a majority of birds can recognize a foreign egg in their nest, however many simply do not care because they lack an instinctive response. Very few birds are entirely capable of routing their brood parasites through their own behavior, as while some have a response to foreign eggs and others have responses to parasitic chicks, very few have responses to both. Reed Warblers are very good at detecting Cuckoo eggs, but lack a defensive response to an aberrant chick in their nest, so if a Cuckoo's egg can match the Reed Warbler's it is in the clear. On the flip side Fairy Wrens do not reject foreign eggs but will abandon nests if they find a parasitic chick, recognizing that it isn't their own because it doesn't make the right call. Between both of these Pukei Pukei may get away with various hosts as their hosts might not have a response at all or at the very least lack one of the important responses needed to reject Pukei Pukei's parasitic brood.
@victory8928
@victory8928 2 года назад
Another thing that can be interesting to consider is that Pukui probably could have acted as a sphere of fear against nest raiders that targeted the wingdrakes because they had to keep watch and ensure that the wingdrakes took care of the young pukui if they did act like that. Which would aid the entire nesting site of the wingdrakes because it reduces the energy needed to protect the young and increase the chances of the young surviving especially in those that aren’t harbouring the pukui egg/s and it may also explain why pukui is so damn aggressive against smaller critters. It is to instil fear of the pukui so that the potential nest predators of the wingdrakes would leave the nests alone especially since that also increases the chances of the pukui babies surviving to the point where they leave the nest. But maybe when Rathalos came that added another bad side effect to the wingdrake colonies, the raths may use them as hunting practice for the young, especially when one considers how many top predators need to practice and learn from their parents on how to hunt. Maybe that isn’t the cause with raths but if it is, then raths would target areas with relatively good size wingdrake colonies as areas for their young to come to for hunting practice which may actually lead the wingdrakes prefer going to pukuis or areas where pukui like to live in and raths don’t. Because it is better to lose one or two eggs or clutchs in a lifetime then to have it cut short but a nest of apex predators. While raths wouldn’t pillage the nests as a whole, given the danger of leaving eggs near wingdrakes, they probably don’t like that close to the wingdrakes as well and only really being their young or the wingdrakes to or from the nest for the teaching or their young naturally gravitate to these areas of relatively easy hunting. Which also leaves the colony more vulnerable to predators that don’t care about raths especially nocturnal predators after some baby raths destroy a good portion of the nests leading predators to the spoils and the rest of them. It’s just speculation but a nice one to consider, maybe pukui is more important to the wingdrakes than just a nuisance in the firm of a brood parasite, maybe they act like a double edge sword, one with a small edge and a large edge.

Absolutely love this monster and I think structurally this is one of your best videos yet, a really great story is told here starting from the brood parasitism and seed dispersal to the invasive Rathalos and its effects on the Ancient Forest, really loved the whole thing. Couple of thoughts, why do you think Pukei travel to the Wildspire Wastes considering just how far it is from the tree tops and forests they are typically associated with? Is this a response with them increasing their range to avoid Rathalos given their absence there? I think it's also interesting to note that the forested areas of the Wildspire also contain Mernos, so it could be they are following the host species for their eggs, and Mernos nests in the Wildspire, if there are any, may be safer for them to raid. And with that, what do you feel about Pukei's inclusion in the Sandy Plains and Flooded Forest in Rise? Does its brood parasitism carry over to the Remobras in those regions as well, or do you think that the Rise team didn't think that out enough? The comment on Pukei's potential relation to Gigginox and Khezu is actually one I've considered before, and to add on to that, I've considered the possibility of Gypceros being within the clade, or at least being sister to it, given its use of poison like Gigginox and Pukei, and its elastic tail being similar to those of the cave wyverns, albeit lacking an opening at the end. Really great stuff over all, and very much looking forward to the Primeval episode!

Thank you so much! I think the wildspire pukeis may just be those on the fringes of their range in the ancient forest, as there is some overlap in those maps. The non-rath guarded mernos could well be preferred though, and its possible they may use Noios too. I think Pukei in Rise is unfortunately like a lot of the returning World roster in that not a lot of thought was put into bringing them back. But remombras are a possibility if we assume they use parental care.

hi I have only recently discovered this wonderful channel, the way in which creatures are analyzed both in a biological and evolutionary sense is spectacular. since the monster analyzed in the video is the Pukei Pukeo, it comes naturally to me to wonder if those faced in MHRise are actually native specimens of the old world, if they emigrated from the new world or if they are victims of poaching as indicated in the MHW guide book; personally I believe that the most probable option is the migration due to the events of Iceborne, this would also explain the presence of the other creatures originating from the new world (exceptional made for the Jhuratodos which in my opinion with Rise confirms its presence in the old world from times immemorial) which coincidentally are almost all of the ancient forest, being that the Pukei is essential for the rapid regrowth of the forest a massive migration could have heavily altered the ecological status of the forest and environments rich in dense vegetation, main habitat of both the Jagras and the Toby may have shrunk to such an extent as to push the species to migrate in search of new territories, obviously the main predator Anjanath of both the Jagras and the Toby following them closely; as for the Kulu Yaku I think that simply the ecological catastrophe that occurred during Iceborne could have reduced the reproduction of herbivores and therefore forced the Kulu to look for new food sources.

I'm very enthralled by your thorough research and dedication to finding (possibly peer-reviewed?) papers that build on your points; A lot of fictional biologists tend to just make fleeting connections to real world biology and usually don't try to back up their claims, under the pretense that "it's all fictional anyway". While that may be true, it's refreshing to see that there are folks who are willing to take the extra work to make sure their points stand on more than just flimsy legs. This was very interesting to watch. I like the concept that Pukei Pukei lays his eggs on Wing Drake nests. It really adds another layer to this monster. Although I’d like to think that Pukei Pukei could also still practice these methods a lot on the Wildspire Wastes with Noios and Mernos. I think it’s even plausible to think it could also do the same on Nightshade, if the Paolumu species lays eggs that is. Rathian shouldn’t be too much of a problem because they’re not as aerial as Rathalos or Legiana. Also looking forward to the Future Predator video. I love the Primeval show so much. It’s a shame it got canceled, but I’m sure it lives on with so many fans. I’m curious to see what you’ve got in store for the Future Predator next week.

Agreed that it can likely practice said methods in the Wildspire too, and if not it borders the forest close enough it can likely still rely on the mernos there. The notion of it parasiting Paloumu is really interesting as well. And thanks, hope it'll be a good one!

Hey, this is rather late, but I just got into your videos and couldn’t help but wonder, maybe Rathalos pushed Pukei-Pukei out of its treetop habitat because of their brood parasitism? You pointed out that brood parasites can have multiple hosts, so maybe Pukei-Pukei tried to take advantage when the Raths first appeared by parasitizing their nests. However, this would backfire because the Raths are not only intelligent enough to know the egg isn’t theirs, but they’re also notoriously protective of their eggs and chicks. This combination would lead to attacking Pukei-Pukei on sight to prevent them from parasitizing and eventually driving them off

How big a fan are you of Pokemon? 2:15-2:35 has me thinking of Murkrow and Honchkrow, two mafia-themed corvid Pokemon with a henchman and don relationship. Not sure if crows/ravens exhibit any type of brood parasite behavior, but Murkrow learns Prankster as an ability, which fits the idea of them fooling other birds into raising their offspring. Keep up the great work on the channel, I'm eating this content up!

Something I'd love to see in Monster Hunter would go very well with you wanting to observe brood parasitism from Pukei Pukei. I think it'd be neat if for certain quests you'd need to scout out and bring a researcher a specific monster's egg, and for Pukei Pukei you'd have to track one down and watch it invade the nest and then take the egg after it's laid. Maybe if you wait to long you'd see the Pukei Pukei hatch and have to start the quest over. The reason for the research quest idea is very Monster Hunter Stories inspired, I think it'd be neat if they're gathering eggs to have them imprint on the researcher in an effort to tame them. Pukei Pukei has demonstrated loyalty in the Witcher subquest, I think maybe that behavior could lead to researchers wanting to tame them into sort of guard dogs. It's wishful thinking, I find Pukei Pukei very cute and would love to give them some special relevance to the series.

Pukei is my third fave monster from World (World being my first game). his colours and behavior is just so flavorful. and, being new to the game series, trying to figure out how to fight a poison spewing bird was a fun challenge. on my first playthrough, i quite enjoyyed his weapon and armor sets. i found poison to be very helpful first time round, when learning the dos and donts of each monster. Tobi is my second fave. a sleek feline, that has quills like a porcupine? and electricity? awesome only monster that beats them out, in Anjananth. simply because, cmon, its a fire breathing TRex with an anger management problem. who doesnt love that?

I think Paolumu also slots somewhere in Pukeis Family. Although its tail isn't as specialized, it shares a similar body type, with remarkably similar looking Wings, and the Airsacks in their necks might be related to Pukeis seemingly inflatable Tongue. Also, Paolumus too eat Eggs
@ravenschippers8267

something that came to mind was that maybe the coral pukei pukei evolved was due to the raths driving the pukeis out of the ancient forest. With the coral highlands being the second best habitable areas and a viable population of possible hosts, over the generations they adapted to the environment and became what they are now. Another thing i noticed was that palamu (the balloon bat monster) looks similar to pukie, sure the head and tail are off but a majority of the features are similar. What if they are related, very distantly at least (if a leech monster can be related to a lizard monster why not a bat?) Otherwise this would be a very interesting form of convergent evolution.

Another great video! I have plans for making a video dedicated to the evolution of every monster in the mainline series. Doing this has led to some interesting theories of my of the monsters we all thought we knew. He are some of these theories... 1. Yian Kut-Ku and Yian Garuga arn't bird wyverns they're flying wyverns ( how can two species of canonically two different clades have off spring?) 2. wyverians are likely descendants of the same group that contains Rajang, Blangonga and Congalala. 3. Temnocerians aren't spiders they are a highly derived group of Neuropterans ( Alta-ka being a Neuropteran also produces silk and has six limbs 2 of which are it's arms) As it stands there are more ideas I have and new ones that are coming to me as I do this messy taxonomy of Monster Hunter but overall I love what I'm doing!
@unnaturalhistorychannel
@unnaturalhistorychannel 2 года назад
I think the yians are still bird wyverns, but I agree with the point about temnocerans definitely not being spiders. If you're in the discord kaijuking has done some good stuff on them especially you should take a look at. And keep it up!

I never knew about the brood-parasitism of Pukei-Pukei, which is rlly interesting. But it does make me wonder several things. Since Pukei is in rise and lives in the Shrine ruins and Sandy plains what species does it use for breeding? Remobra are the only seemingly colonial nesting flying animals in the shrine ruins. So does it use terrestrial bird wyverns like Jaggi, Izuchi or Wroggi? They seem unlikely to me since they are very social animals. What’s your take on this? Also great video as always :)
@unnaturalhistorychannel
@unnaturalhistorychannel 2 года назад
Yeah if anything it seems Remobra would be most likely, although I think this is chiefly a case of Capcom forgetting their own canon. And thanks!

Pukei is one of my favorite monsters. Not for fight but for how fantastically goofy he looks. I love him. I would love to have one (a very small one) as a pet (as long as they stayed small) One of the things that world did that really doesn't get enough credit was putting all its graphical oomph to use. Monsters are better defined, have more coloring, they aren't smears of texturing. Yeah sure, you had colorful monsters in the past but they were far less visually dynamic.

My personal theory on Rathalos invading the Ancient Forest is that it caused Coral Pukei to emerge. As it used to live in the canopy, some Pukei would likely have made their nests close to or even on the the mountain range between the Ancient Forest and Coral Highlands. When Rathalos attacked, this group panicked and fled to the Coral Highlands by accident, and decided to stay after discovering the lack of threats other than Legiana, which is only there part of the year, and easy food access. Over time, this group of Pukei Pukei would have changed colors due to the pigments in the coral polyps. Their heads were already well suited for drinking water from the sponges, and as they couldn’t get any poison, their poison sack and its related organs would have changed to be better suited for storing and weaponizing water. They also would have changed to parasitizing Raphinos, which would be less likely to prevent them from doing this. Thus, Coral Pukei was born.

While I'm unsure about the canon of the Witcher Event Quest. But as Geralt, you can save a pukei pukei and it becomes bonded to Geralt. Taking the active risk of aiding the Witcher in attacking the invasive Leshen. And after getting rid of the threat the pukei sticks around and allows Geralt to pet it. I'm curious if that at all has a biological and or animal psychological explanation for such behaviors or should I just chuck it up to Capcom giving the bird wyvern some extra love and screentime.

Like all wyverns might be a bit confusing with a few different ideas of the was was the stem in the evolution for many wyverns alike. There was talks about Origin Wyverns being the ancestor of all wyverns, claims of Wyvern Rex being the ancestor of all flying wyverns, and that of there being a shelled Lizard. Judging by all your videos, you seem to say that most of the flying wyverns came from wingdrake. Any ideas as to why and a better way clear this all up? Again this can be speculation.
