Snowy egret range is huge. That's a perfect wetland environment, big park, protected, quiet, then conversely, I find a flock of them on the farm, hanging out with a cow in a grassland in Mexico.

I am in SW/west-central Wisconsin and today I went to Necedah wildlife refuge and the southern area around Petenwell Lake. Yesterday I went to Sandhill wildlife area. We’ve gotten a lot of rain recently (all year!) and the mosquitoes were brutal so I had to stay in my car with windows up the whole time sadly- I guess it must’ve been ospreys in flight over the water at the Petenwell dam today… it was a dreary rainy day so perhaps this is why their underbelly looked more gray rather than white? They had that distinctive white patch on top of head and I wasn’t able to find a match until I see the bird in your. Idea thumbnail- that’s what it looked like I got pics to take a closer look later. In a back area somewhere near the side or below the lake, I saw an osprey sitting in its nest high up atop a power pole.. when I got to where a different road the osprey was sitting on a beam outside the nest but next to it.. I got some good pics! Now I’ll have to compare the birds in flight photos to the osprey in flight and verify that is what it is..

My family is there right now. I couldn’t join due to work but DE is kind of a Mecca for birding. Especially for we Pennsylvanians who don’t get to see a ton of shore birds.. I love the nesting planks they have the Ospreys.

Looks like a great trip! I'm heading to southern DE in July to see family and I'm hoping to sneak away and get my first trip to Bombay Hook.

I'm going there Wednesday through Friday, despite the heat. Hoping for Least Bittern and Black-bellied Ducks. Not sure where the ducks are, though.

Good luck! The Black-bellied Whistling Ducks are at the retention pond on Amalfi Drive in Clayton, DE.

@@LycoBirds I see Amalfi Drive on Google maps, but there doesn't appear to be a pond. Is it small and at the end of the road?

How common are whistling ducks in the NE? In my area (San Antonio, TX) they are omnipresent

Still rare but seem to be increasing as vagrants. And when groups show up they seem to settle in.
