South Texas is home to some of the top birding hotspots in the nation. One of these hotspots, the National Butterfly Center, normally hosts a few rarities including Audubon's Orioles, Groove-billed Anis, and Northern Beardless Tyrannulets. We met up with our friend Ryan Rodriguez in order to try to find some of the birds.

You got some terrific views of the groove-billed ani.

What a fantastical bird the Ani is!!! That beak is something else, and the feather pattern is so cool. Almost like nature mixed together finch and falcon traits. You'd almost think the bird was enjoying the humans' attention to it, too! As if maybe the bird had "human with funny hat" on a target list of its own, haha!

Happy to hear the Butterfly Center is still around. I'd heard it had closed, or was going to close, or something.

They received a lot of threats from people who believed there was a secret migrant smuggling ring using the Center as a cover. They closed it in Feb 2022 to keep their employees safe and reopened it in April 2022.

You had some great birds there! In 2018 during a visit there we got Blue Bunting! Seems like there’s always something rare around.

That’s awesome! We were hoping a Blue Bunting would be reported when we were in town.

I've been to the Butterfly Center but only for butterflying that when I was there in 2015 they didn't have any bird feeder setup I'm glad they do now I will definitely go there next year , thank you for showing this to us viewers there Derek and Ryan .

The Ani is a really cool one. About two weeks ago, I got to see a Groove-billed and Smooth-billed Anis at the same spot, with great views of both of them.
