Documenting a rather harsh cold spell in the Metro Vancouver area in Canada, with temperatures around -10C, making liquid water hard to find for birds. Water is prevented from freezing locally with a hot water can in the midst of the ice.

In such extreme weather the water in the bird bath is just enough to drink, not to bathe. If the whole bird bath was heated with a pool of liquid water, and birds were to take baths in it, that would probably lead to disastrous consequences. See: blog.nature.or...
