Birds of northern South Africa part 1

Around 150 of the most common birds of the northern provinces of south Africa have been recorded during the month of December (South African summer). Mostly during road side birding (using the car as birdhide) in natural reserves and NP's. Since more than 900 species have been recorded in South Africa, this is only a very small sample of the more common species! Labelling to the best of our knowledge. Part 1 and 2 shot in Dino Keng NR, the Rietvlei NR, the Groenkloof university campus, the Pretoria botanical gardens and Austin Roberts Bird sanctuary.
Part 3 and 4 during a weekend in Kruger NP.

I can’t believe it took me so long to find your videos, but thank heavens I did. I have been watching African live cams for several years and there have been so many birds (and bird calls) that I have wondered about. I happen to think that you are some sort of genius for creating this series. I love it so much. Thank you

Beautifully presented. Lovely positioning of the camera. Great the way it all ties together. Quite extraordinary. My in-laws are avid birdwatchers. They are from South Africa and caught the bug there. I have been interviewing them - many many stories. The latest was their experience bird watching. They are in their 90s now. So I decided to look up South African birds and found your videos. You brought it all to life! Thank you!

First of all, thanks so much for doing this! We are headed to Zambia later this year, and your series helps immensely in preparing to learn the birds in a region that is new to me. One suggestion would be to wait a short while in the video before the name of the bird appears. I learn more by having to work out the identification on my own, once the name is on the screen I can't "unsee" it. If I may, there are a few of the identifications that might need to be revised. I will let you contact me privately if you would like to discuss further. Again, many thanks.

Hadidas waking me from my deep siesta, someone is coming for sure. They've walked far by foot on the dusty road. I will get dressed and meet them, make them welcome and offer them all I have. Yes all I have. I will show them the life I left far behind and let them hear this distant song. The sunlight on water that ripples, the turtle dove that coos, hand in hand with a lover that would never be.

What I use is a Sony FDR-AX53 4K consumer camera with a 20X optical zoom, fitted with an old Sony teleconversion lens VCL-HG2037Y factor 2X. I record moving scenes preferentially in FHD at 50P. I only us 4K 25P recording for long distance shots without too much motion. This allows me to crop later on during editing achieving around 1600mm equivalent without loosing FHD resolution. I render in XAVC S which provides much better quality than XAVC. Recording for both formats at 100 megabit sec to minimise artefacts.a 4K 50P camera

At 12:01, the shorebird is teetering like a Common Sandpiper. However the upperparts are gray rather than brown with white fringing on the feathers and a banded tail. The upper leg is relatively long, and the leg color is green-gray rather than yellow-gray. I think it is a better fit for Common Greenshank.
@mansuryayas
@mansuryayas 5 лет назад
I agree that is a common Green Shank
@sophiel.2818
@sophiel.2818 3 года назад
The Common Sandpiper has a conspicuous white shoulder bar with shorter neck and legs (in relation to the size of its own body), while the bird at 12:01 doesn't. However, with the pattern (obvious six or five spots or stripes) on the primaries and tail, the bird at 12:01 looks more like a Wood Sandpiper for me.

Lovely video! To be honest i spent more time scanning the video for the names of the birds than looking at the birds! This in my opinion is because the "bird description" is the "wrong colour" in the shot, making it virtually Impossible to see! On the Positive side i watched the video several times over to find the descriptions!🤗 Thanks for posting🐾🐾
@guymarchal8660
@guymarchal8660 Год назад
I agree, the names are sometimes difficult to read in my first video's. today I added a black outline and put them on a more uniform darker background if available in the picture. The small size is a compromize I made, since not all viewers are interested in bird identification.
