From the album cover - This collection of 52 remarkable sounds patiently, sometimes hazardously, always faithfully recorded is the direct result of the success of a companion volume ‘‘Wildlife Calls of Africa’’ - issued in 1966. Modest though the aims and ambitions for that record were, its chief architects -Tony Pooley and Dick Reucassel-have been so inspired by its impact on ornithologists, conservationists and the public, both in Southern Africa and on other continents that they decided to create a second work. In effect, this quintessence of some 34 minutes of fascinating animal and bird sounds, reproduced here for study, delight and occasion- ally astonishment, is the culmination of about three years steady and devoted work. Most of the animal and some of the bird calls have been recorded by Dick Reucassel F.R.P.S. - well-known South African film producer and keen wildlife photographer - during countless hours in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve and the Kruger National Park in South Africa, the Wankie National Park in Rhodesia and the Chobi Game Reserve in Botswana. The bird and some of the animal calls have largely been recorded by the naturalist, Tony Pooley, in the Ndumu and Mkuzi Game Reserves in South Africa. The linking of all the calls, together with the use of appropriate background-dawn, day, dusk, and dark,- in forest, open savannah woodland or viei, has been directed by Hugh Rouse- well-known South African broadcaster and documentary film scenario writer-who also wrote the script and narrated the disc. The initial editing of the master tape was undertaken by Dick Reucassel. Only the very best recorded calls and sequences have been selected-some of them unique, many remarkably rare, all the result of painstaking perseverance. Among the sequences of special note, and unique in their capture on record, are those of the elephant herd and the plovers, imitations by the Natal Robin and the Wild Dogs leaping as a pack at a treed genet. These and other moments bring Wild Life of the bushveld excitingly to mind. For those who know little of African Wild- life - a facet of the continent fast shrinking to the care of dedicated conservationists - this presentation will evoke a strange, new atmos- phere to be found nowhere else in the world; to those who know and love the bird and animal life it will recall many moments beyond verbal or visual power to conjure.
