I revisit a local spot with my camera, to capture the seven sisters cliffs and their reflections at low tide. In this video I show you where to go, scout out a few compositions on the beach area as well as a great vantage point for both Belle Tout and Beachy Head Lighthouse. I include the what3words locations for each of the spots.
Thanks to my pal Pablo Rodriguez for the thumbnail image and sharing his other photograph. Go check out his website: pablorodriguez...
And of course, my work can be found at: www.benharveyphotography.co.uk
Thanks for watching/reading!
Ben

Looks like you had a fantastic morning, the light looked great, nice images Ben 👍

Thanks Chris, it was a lovely calm morning. I am making more of a effort this year to get to the location earlier, and in this instance I think that pre-sunrise offers a lot of opportunity. I returned earlier this week to Birling Gap and the sun is already rising in-land.

Thanks Paul - its a lovely location. But it is best during the winter when the sun is rising and setting over the sea.

I am really missing the sea. Nice simple images. We still have to so out collaboration mate. Mad that cliff falling.

Thanks Paul, its a lovely location. I actually returned this morning - low tide collided with sunrise again. There is a new crack appearing in the cliff, I think that the rain and freezing has created some fresh movement!

I see I can count on you to have my back! :) That was a nice morning, we are lucky to have that place not far from us. Had work but next time, low tide down at the lighthouse.

Very inspiring vid Ben thankyou. looking forward to exploring the rest of your channel. Btw Belle Tout is pronounced as "Bell 2"

Thank you Bob for the correction on how to pronounce it - it was pretty confident I was getting it wrong. Enjoy the rest of my videos and I have more coming soon.

Tks. I’m surprised you were not bummed at the lack of clouds. Seems like an awesome place for some dramatic BW images

I was! I went back this morning in search of clouds for some long exposures! The problem is aligning low tide with sunrise and the right season so that the sun rises in the sea and not behind the cliffs.

Great video as always. As someone who lives and shoots in the Canadian Arctic it’s interesting to see how much differently the photographic workflow is in the south.

Thanks Jon, its also a good reason to go out with others when you can. See how others shoot. I often go out with other well versed photographers and think, I cant see a composition here, I am intrigued to see what he can get . Then I see the image and it is great, I just didn’t see it at the time. It’s all a learning experience isn’t it!

Nice images there Ben, looks like you had an enjoyable morning. I am just back from a four session at a local beach today. One of those days, where I wasn't that fussed if the images were great or not, was just nice to be out and didn't see another soul about which suited me fine.

Hey Jim, that’s great to hear. I live in the coast, so I am lucky. Some have to travel quite far to enjoy the ocean and the beach. I find myself gravitating toward the beach whenever I need some escapism. I bet your beach in Scotland are lovely! I look forward to seeing the results. The sunrise time is creeping up on us already. Spring is on the way!

Use cds as coasters. I use windows millennium disks because that’s all they’re good for. Also a bin bag for laying the backpack sometimes helps. Great vid!

That’s great. I saw Thomas Heaton promote the use of CDs on one of his videos years ago. I keep them in my bag but never use them (I think I went for some old PC games from the 90’s!). On the bag cover, I also carry around a fold up plastic sheet that is actually a table cloth BUT the problem is that it get covered in sand a sea water and I cant put it back in my bag....so I end up carrying it and I regret it instantly! Is there a solution for this, other than not putting your bag down?

Nice one Ben, I harbour a fantasy of a wander out to Beachy Head lighthouse at low tide at some point. Maybe I'll just send a drone there instead!
@benharveyphotography
@benharveyphotography 3 года назад
The drone certainly saves going near the edge - it is sketchy there right now. The recent cold weather seems to have created some fresh cracks quite set back from the edge.

hi Ben, Gordon suggested i ask u this question. have u used the polar pro variable ND filters??? and, ur thoughts???? thanks a bunch!!!
@benharveyphotography
@benharveyphotography 3 года назад
Hi Steve. I have only used the polar pro filters on my DJI Mavic and my Osmo Pocket. For my larger lenses I use Freewell magnetic ND filters. BUT if I was starting afresh and I was only interested in screw filter NDs then I would certainly look at polar pro, especially since they have different strength variable NDs. I hope this helps. Gerald Undone did a great review of all the variable ND’s and the polar pros were at the top if I remember correctly.

Ben...Cheeky ask...I am using Gobe screw on filters but would like to change them...I shoot Canon, I have a 24-105 as my go to lens...plus a 10-18 for ultra wide..I only have a 400mm fixed prime which ive not tried for long exposure yet...What are your go to filters please? Obviously a 10 and 6 stopper? Thanks. Spike
@benharveyphotography
@benharveyphotography 3 года назад
Hi Spike, I just replied to your other comments on my latest video. Regarding filters, you have different filter thread sizes to deal with, I believe that the 10-18 is 67mm tread and the 24-105 is 77mm, not sure what the 40mm is. So whatever system you go with you are going to need some step up rings or adaptors to fit the filter system to your various lenses. I do really enjoy using the magnetic filter system, but the circular ones don’t work with grad filters. If you need to use grad filters then I think you will be better off using a traditional filter system like the Lee or the Hitech 100mm system. I use the Hitech. Like in my Newhaven video that I just released, sometimes you can get away with just using long exposure filters, then the magnetic circular ones are quick and easy. If you want to see the systems that I use then watch these videos , ‘Seven Sisters part 3’ for Hitech, ‘freewelll magnetic filters review’ and ‘photographing cliche landmarks’ for the H&Y magnetic filter system I have on loan. Hopefully this is helpful! Ben

@@benharveyphotography Appreciate you taking the time to reply...Took your advice and watched your freewell vid on Brighton beach, will look at your blog also...I like what you said about grad filters...which leads me to think the Hitech system might be best value. Maybe you should do part-time 1-2-1 tuition !! I'd pay for that!
