The Queen's Baton Relay for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games made a visit to St Helena in December 2021.
A tour of the island districts was arranged, beginning in Rupert's Bay at 8am and finishing in Jamestown over 12 hours later.
This short film (13mins) captures the flavour of the day as people from different districts came out for a picture with the Baton as it toured through Deadwood, Longwood, Hutts Gate, Levelwood, Sandy Bay, St Paul's, Half Tree Hollow and Jamestown.

Nice film .. My late father always spoke fondly about St. Helena. He was a Chief Engineer on the UNion castle ships, which would stop at St. Helena on their way to Southern Africa I filmed the baton in Whitley Bay this morning, as it makes it'ds way around the UK We even had a young man, carrying the baton while skateboarding .. now that's a skill I would like to learn. Well Done everybody !

Thanks Brian. Many people here still remember the Union Castle ships fondly, a few worked on board as well. Great to hear how the baton is going, we do look for it every so often online to see how it's doing. It was wonderful having it here on St Helena for those few days. We will be tuning in when the Games start. Very best wishes from St Helena 💓😃

@@danielmoroff6179 oh gosh, that's some serious cold 👀will try not to complain about our 12C during our winter next time! BTW, loved Toronto - we visited in 2015, in the summer, was fantastic.

@@whatthesaintsdidnext You'd luv it here. 40-60 cm of snow fell in one day!!! Toronto has a unique way to clear its snow, it's called SPRING!!! Hehehehe I wish I could afford to visit your Island. Oh well......

Just to follow up because I was hacked a while ago so I have 2 accounts, one with a middle initial and one without! We'll survive the snow, I think! One day I will visit your beautiful Island. All I want to say is that I'm in Canada...NOT America's little brother. LUV!!!!

I hope to visit your special island one day, and especially hope it's before the phone booths (not sure what you call them?) go away. So awesome!

Hey there @Poplicola08 we still have a few phone booths in operation, however, mobile phone usage is on the increase. Will probably still be a good few years though before all the phone booths are phased out. Hope you get to make you visit soon. Cheers 👍

I know St Helena is a beautiful place. I have penpal there but a visit there with the airfares etc will cost thousands. I think it is the people that make it. They seem very special: oh well one day.

Thanks Matt 👍 yes, unfortunately the travel costs are quite a challenge for many, including us here on the island 😒 Hope you do get to visit someday - fingers crossed for you 🤞 Cheers

Congratulations Sharon and Darrin on the high tech to go along with your expertise. That is the highest resolution and best color and light balence I've seen you guys do yet. It must be 1080 or 4K because I can see it on my S20 phone like I've never seen any of those before, even through RU-vid. Please let everyone know when the fiber link is fully activated and available to everyone there in paradise, and we will celebrate. Merry Christmas from the States and looking forward to a great New Year. Bill Fulgham, K5EYS ---- post note, Our family has ancient ancestral links to the Foljambs in the UK. Our ship Captain ancestor changed the surname when he arrived in the new world in the middle 1600s.

Thanks Bill 👍 yes, we've been upgrading our film making capabilities this past 12 months and very happy with it all now. 😊 A few interesting projects in the pipeline for the new year. Fiber optic cable sounds like it won't be available to us until 2023. 😢 Always great to hear from you, Merry Christmas to you and yours from us both here on St Helena, and very best wishes for a healthy and happy new year.

Very nice. My father is a Saint and my mother is English. My father has been in the UK since 1963. He would love to see the island again, at some point.

That's a long time, John. Hope your dad gets a chance to see his home again after all these years. At least now-a-days RU-vid is much better at sharing more up to date little stories like these. Cheers

The people of Saint Helena looks like Capetonians
@whatthesaintsdidnext
@whatthesaintsdidnext 2 года назад
Hey Lorrenzo, our early ancestry is made up of slaves from West Africa, Madagascar, Bengal and Asia, and Chinese indentured workers, as well as descendents of English settlers. When we've visited Cape Town ourselves we also always notice how similar we look. The island has a strong link with Cape Town today as most of our goods are imported from there.
