Deanna Tikhonov WHNP-BC discusses common side effects of birth control and what that really can be indicating. Rather than suffer in silence and accept that your mood swings or acne are just a "normal" side effect of your birth control, maybe it's time to reconsider. Remember, your body is always trying to communicate with you and it's so important you feel comfortable with whatever method you decide to use.

I’ve tried the IUD, patch, implant and progestin only pill. I gained weight, developed frequent cystic acne (never had issues with my skin), intense mood swings, irregular/no periods etc. Every time I tried to talk to a doctor about it they were always dismissive and made me feel like I was exaggerating my symptoms. At this point, it’s so frustrating to get any information about what is actually happening to my body, and it’s disappointing when it’s coming from female doctors as well. I’ve decided to get off birth control and try a different method to prevent pregnancies. I appreciate your videos, thank you for making them. ❤️

Thank you so much for this. I’ve always had problems with birth control and felt best without it. I’ve never had back pain before from periods and ever since getting my iud, I’ve had constant back pain. It’s been just over a year now and it is unbearable. The OB I saw doesn’t think it’s from my iud, but my back felt great before getting it.

Thank you for this video! I have PCOS and I was put on Evra patch at the beginning of 2017. I really really liked it - cheerful mood, high libido, even lost some weight (22 lbs)! But at the beginning of 2020, after a trip that included several long flights, I developed a blood clot in my calf. And my family doctor took me off Evra :( We are now looking for other options for me because without Evra my libido became very low, I gained weight and most importantly, I don't have periods at all and I feel like I'm slipping into depression.. You talked about mini pill and I feel like I'm ready to give it a try! (fingers crossed it will help)

Hi Elena! You are so welcome! Oh no I'm sorry to hear you experienced this! Yes the mini pill definitely sounds like a safer reasonable option for you. Low libido and PCOS can also be addressed through lifestyle changes that impact our hormones. The mini pill of course has the added benefit of birth control but if you are interested in learning more to balance your hormones long term let me know! Good luck!

Hello! I’m 18 and my periods are quite irregular, in fact i haven’t been on it since 3 months until today. The next morning I’ve seen a doctor (My uterus has a sense of humor after all). She prescribed me a birth control pill which I am not sure whether I’m comfortable in taking them. I would love to listen from you what benefits I can have taking them, what exactly happens when my estrogen and progesterone levels are high..? A little help to make me feel a little better after these whole ocean of people hating the pill. Thank you

In your opinion, what's the best way of breaching this topic with your significant other? We track my cycles through temperature tracking. We both don't want kids, but I don't want to be on birth control again and I'm too young (34) for surgery and I have pcos . We use protection (before anyone asks), but it's not an easy topic to bring up when I've been on birth control for so long.

I have been having severe acid reflux since starting the pill a month ago. It doesn’t improve with diet. Will this side effect go away or should I just stop the pill. It’s making me miserable 😩

Can you talk about the IUD. Does my body have a chance to detox?

Is it normal to constantly have breast tenderness and pain (kinda hard aswell) constantly. I started the pill in January 2021 and since beginning of April it’s been like this I don’t know if this is normal or not?

Hi Emma, while this is a common side effect with the pill, it’s not something to just deal with. Definitely check in with your provider to discuss maybe switching to another pill or method.
