Bishop's weed (Aegopodium podagraria), also called ground elder or goutweed, is a creeping perennial plant that spreads easily and it is difficult to remove once it's established. As of June 2023, it is on the Maryland Department of Agriculture's watchlist as a potential invasive species in Maryland. It is not recommended for use in gardens!

I've been fighting this for literally 20yrs as a "friend" 😁 gave me some when we first moved here. 2 yrs ago I'd had enough and completely covered the entire bed along west side of house with tarps for a little over a year. Killed everything in the bed, I thought. In the Spring I uncovered the bed and it was all growing again. I've been somewhat successful at hand pulling on the edges where it meets north flower bed with the help of a Hori Hori and following the root for as long as possible before pulling. Truly a nightmare. I'm in Zone5 🇨🇦. Snow on the mountain sounded so romantic when she gave it to me. 🤦🏻‍♀️

It was all over my garden to So my dad mowed it all down with the lawnmower and covered it in cardboard but it keeps coming back so every week we go into the garden and pull it up

@@Nowee16 That's absolutely correct it will be with me forever 😁 doesn't matter if you exclude light or solarize that stuff finds a way you just have to try and stay on top of it not always easy when we can't get out every single week. I can assure you 🚫NO herbicides will be used in my gardens. 🌱

The leaves on the tall stems look very closely related to Water Hemlock, is this plant poisonous?

Who ever plant it? Goutweed is very noxious within it's native range, almost impossible to remove it from mixed plantings. I thought it's well-known enough to prevent anyone from deliberate planting it.

Its medicinal plant full of nutrients. Smart people add young shots into veggie salads.

Disagree this plant is so incredibly aggressive growing and hard to remove. In 3 years I went from a couple inches of it to it covering my entire garden. It's choking out everything. I dig about 2 feet down and hand pull every single root I can find and it still grows back every year

A plant can be both useful to people and harmful to the environment. When we say harmful we usually mean that a non-native plant, like this one, doesn't provide as much support to wildlife as native plants do. A native plant is one that has grown in an environment alongside other living things for a long time, usually thousands of years. Because of the time they have been together, many of the the animals, birds, and insects learn to use that plant for shelter and food. Their bodies adapt to eat it without getting sick. Non-native plants can also provide some food and shelter, but usually only to a few types of animals or insects. Some non-native plants become so aggresive that they outgrow and kill native plants! Some grow so thick that they change how water flows and cause floods (the melaleuca tree and water hyacinth both do this)! Some even make forest fires much more intense or they create a new way for the fire to move around (old world climbing fern and tumbleweeds both do this)! Often it is hard to know what kind of damage a non-native plant can do until they spread and grow. It costs millions of tax dollars each year to try to undo the damage that invasive plants cause and to try to get rid of them. While this plant in the video may be a great spice that is healthy for people, and it isn't an invasive plant quite yet, we do need to be careful to try to keep it contained so we can protect the environment and outselves.

It’s a horribly invasive species that out competes and kills the native species and garden plants alike. It’s an absolute nightmare to remove from the garden. This plant will be banned from sale in the future.
