Perentie Monitor lizards are the largest lizard in Australia, and it takes a lot of work and dedication to raise them in our domestic situations, but it’s a dream lizard for many around the world. In this adventure, I head over to Scott and Tie Eipper’s amazing facility to see how to properly set up and care for these giant lizards…and see what happens when one of this big guys gives a rather nasty bite!
Perentie Monitor Facts:
The perentie (Varanus giganteus) is the largest monitor lizard or goanna native to Australia, and the fourth-largest living lizard on earth, after the Komodo dragon, Asian water monitor, and the crocodile monitor. Found west of the Great Dividing Range in the arid areas of Australia, it is rarely seen because of its shyness and the remoteness of much of its range from human habitation. The lizard can grow up to 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) long, although the average length is around 1.75 to 2 m (5 ft 9 in to 6 ft 7 in) and weigh up to 15 kg (33 lb) - maximum weight can be over 20 kg (44 lb). Their rival for the title of the third-largest lizard is the crocodile monitor, which although often longer, exceeding 2.4 m in length, is lighter and less bulky than the perentie. However, perenties are relatively lean lizards and are less bulky than either the Komodo dragon or the Asian water monitor.

Love the extra mile he goes to to replicate their natural settings as much as possible indoors before he moves them outside, you can tell the care/passion he has for his monitors/snakes. He is the kind of herper we need for the hobby!

Hi thanks for the kind words - my wife Tie is the real hero of the critters. I am mainly focus on some of the venomous and building/construction. Tie runs the collection. The systems have been designed around careful planning drawing on our collective experience with wild and captive reptiles and their requirements. I wish she was not so camera shy as I am sure Dav would attest!

That was awesome! Australia rocks in having the most impressive diversity of monitors in the world and the perentie is one of the most impressive of them all! Like the streamlined and sleek appearance that they have and how they can run so fast and run down fast moving mammals like rabbits. Scott's facility is awesome so much effort and attention to detail has gone into it well done I hope he keeps it up for a long time to come. Thanks for another Aussie reptile adventure keep it up bro hope you can eventually come to the west of this great country cheers from Perth Western Australia.

When I used to import and sell reptiles (in the 1970's), I found that it was cheaper to feed chickens and/or pigeons to larger snakes, lizards and crocodiles. The chicks could be bought by the hundred and frozen at that size, or kept about one month and fed to larger critters. I found pigeon breeders in my area, who froze and saved all culls for me. Rats were substantially more expensive, and couldn't be tossed live into the cages with finicky animals, because rats can become very aggressive when cornered and could seriously injure my inventory.

@varanid9

@@davkaufmansreptileadventures I would have thought that the local monitors were immune; in Florida, it was found that the Varanus Salvatore are immune to the toxins of the Marinus Bufus, apparently. Of course, I wouldn't want to test that out with my animal.
@BeholdItKnits
@BeholdItKnits 5 лет назад
@@varanid9 I believe there are one or two reptile species in Australia that are immune (eg, the Keelback snake) but most are not. Cane toads are a threat to a lot of Aussie wildlife and are really fucking things up. The more charismatic species like the large monitors are especially at risk as they're large enough to eat the toads (smaller insectivores and whatnot generally being not as much of a concern.) Mitchell's water monitor for example is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN and it's basically because of cane toads (obviously animals that favour those toad friendly wet areas being at even greater risk.)

Cane toads Rhinella marina are an introducted species to Australia. As we have no toads in Australia our lizards have no evolved with toad poison. So anything that eats frogs can die if they eat a Toad. Unfortunately we lost the female to a toad.

That being said, here is my question for the maker of this video (Dave Kaufman's Reptile Adventures): Can a fully grown Asian water monitor lizard kill and eat a highly venomous snake such as a Black mamba and not be affected by the Black mamba's venom? Cane toads are poisonous. I'm assuming the female perentie ate the toad and succumbed to the poison.

Heya! Instead of gluing them to the walls we screwed them in using pipe saddles (that’s what they are called here, not sure if your plumbing parts have the same terminology)

My bad I mean the music that starts at @4:54 sounds just like something from Devil May Cary an OST stands for original sound track sorry it took me so long to get back to you

I love monitors ❤💯❤ These animals are beautiful and very well taken care of. Amazing facility and yeah I can imagine a nice nip from the big ones can certainly do a lot of damage. Glad he got nipped by a smaller one and that his hand is still attached to his body, no finger missing and that he was able to treat it without a hospital visit. The story about the monitor holding on to his dead girlfriend is so sad 😭 Obviously these animals do have feelings, we just don't know exactly how their feelings work? So pls don't go out and torture these animals for fun cause they're dangerous in the wild !!!! I've heard of so many ppl abusing snakes when they find them. They abuse them until they die or they just chop their heads off right away. THAT'S NOT COOL !!!

I have always loved monitor lizards, my favorite one was A Western water monitor lizard. But what kind doesn't get very large I don't know. And a nother question is there a type of monitor lizard that's more like a rhino Iguana?

If you're looking for a smaller monitor check out red Ackies. And Rhino iguanas have a pretty stocky build. There aren't really monitors like them

Probably. Frye demonstrated the proteins in monitor saliva identical to venom. I got a glancing bite from my spencer’s monitor on my finger, a very small but deepish laceration that hurt all out of proportion to the injury. It ached and throbbed like a bitch for hours.

Is Perentie bigger than the lace monitor in the same way that red kangaroo is "bigger" than they grey Kangaroo (Averages)

i'd say they're very similar in length when it comes to averages.
