I have one readily available for borrowing at any time.

If you have depth mics you can use those to check the deck height and it's a little more accurate. Take an old main bearing and grind the tang off of it so you can slide it over without interference now you can depth mic to the top of the bearing. Then just add half of the main journal housing diameter and you're there. Just make sure you measure to the highest point of the diameter, the tangent to get an accurate measurement.(I'm sure you know how to do that, this was for non-machinists reading this)😎👍

This way has proven to be as reliable as my custom Starrett deck gage on my boring/decking fixture.

@@whiplashmachine Whatever works for you... Just wanted to mention that way in case the mill you use sets the block on the main journal housing bore on a smaller diameter to mount the block? If so if you made spacers the size of the housing bores all you would have to do is indicate the spacers in to where they're zeroed out to the cutter. Then mount your block and you're parallel to the mains. To measure with the block on the mill, you would need to use something that can measure the depth. Also BHJ makes a jig to setup your 45° angle using the main bore and the cam bore. Those are on the pricey side so if you have a Bridgeport or some other kind of vertical mill you could make your own. I'm a new subscriber so not sure what machines you have yet. If you have a CNC to machine blocks, nevermind.😎👍

@@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 thanks for the sub. Best way to get up to speed on my machines and capabilities would be to find me on Instagram at, @whiplashmachine

@@whiplashmachine Not an Instagram guy, only social media I'm signed up for is here and rum ble. But just looked at your older videos and didn't see any CNC machines. I've been a Tool and Die machinist for 37 years and have worked with one of my very best friends that has his own engine machine shop for 25 years. He was a bit mad at me to until I made the spacers for his block and head mill and figured out what I was trying to tell him. He told me that I had to mock the engine up and measure the depth of the piston in the bore ATDC on all four corners so he could setup the block in the machine. I asked why and he told me how the block was setup for milling and that it didn't sit exactly square on the smaller bar than what the housing bore is. I looked at how he had a block setup to mill and made a stack of spacers for just about every housing bore diameter there is for the USA V8 engines. Now he just indicates the spacers in and he can cut the deck to any height the customer wants. Looked for your block mill in your videos and not sure which one you use for decking or how you setup a block. Just thought I would pass this info to you if it might be helpful. 😎👍

@@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 Journeyman machinist here with quite a few years in toolndie, mold making, jigs&fixture building nd various machine manufacturing. I don't need a cnc machine to true up somthing as simple and basic as an engine block. I use my horizontal boring machine to square up and rough bore the blocks. I have a nice mounting fixture and a similar trueing fixture to the BHJ stuff. Blocks sit on a bar with sized bushings to mains and is quite easy to dial in. I have a gage to inspect deck heights on the machine. Bores and decks get roughed in leaving material for finishing. Decks are finished on a high speed CBN resurfacer amd bores finished in sunnen CV616. I manufacture and remanufacture various machinery for pulp, paper and mining as a day job using conventional and cnc machines. Horizontal borer and large Vertical lathes are my specialty and most often where I am assigned, followed by the large diameter lathes and cylinder grinders. Some neat stuff here. What vids I post here are of my garage machines. Skimming engine castings and doing odd repairs for local engine shops is just a hobby. I spent quite a bit of time in engine shops but always end up missing real machining. Now I have both in my life👍

Thanks🍻 I have made big changes at the shop and should be able to start uploading on a more regular basis because of it. Gonna take a bit to get back into the groove I think. Just this basic edit was a handful lol

Man I’ve been waiting for a vid forever lol! I am so bummed your not doing any work for the general public, although I get it. Sounds like you’ve been jerked around a bit.

Not so much jerked around, just done with the "I need asap" or "could you do a better price" and the endless amount of calls for "updates". It is all just a waste of my time and I get very little gratitude from most customers. Since I don't need the general walk in work I figured why bother. I have plenty of stuff going on to keep me busy. Now that I am about caught up I will be able to play with my recording gear more and that means more content to come. Thankyou for the support and sorry if you were one of the many I have turned away to get work done. Time to focus on me for a while🍻🍻

@@whiplashmachine I get it. I run a small business and it seems all anyone wants is a job done cheaper. Or faster. Nobody wants to pay for quality anymore, kinda sad actually. Keep up the vids man

Well one thing I have noticed since I won't take on any of the work people suddenly are now offering to pay above my usual rates lol. Still not interested but find it annoyingly commical.

@@whiplashmachine Charge a profitable price and explain its done when its done. If you are ok with the terms your work goes in the pile and I get to it when I get to it. 🙂 That is what I had to go to. I still have stuff being dropped off here even though I tell them it will probably be 6 months or more before I even start on it.

@@bcbloc02 it's not the money as I charge going rate in our are and it is quite profitable for the simplicity of the work and how much of it there is. Just done with ALL the BS annoyances and really sick of storing of storing crap. My new currant system, although still in the works, is working for me. I have very little stuff in here that is not mine. My shop is clean. The phone is not ringing all the time and the walk ins have finally slowed down. April of 2023 is when I started implementing my new strategies and it just recently has started to become efficient and stress free. I am very happy with the way it has been going and look forward to seeing how it plays out on the long run. My overhead is incredibly low. Well below typical operating costs for the overpriced area I live in. I can now pick and choose what I "feel" like working on and in this economy around here that works. There is not enough engine shops or general machine shops in our busy area. So everyone is running around trying to just find anybody to do the work. It is a very good place to be for me right now. I also have many of my projects that been on the back burner for way too long. Time to start worrying about my machine shop needs for a while.
