Bite Sized Philosophy is a brand new series where I tackle life's big questions and attempt to answer them through philosophy; western, eastern and everything in between.
René Descartes was a French mathematician and philosopher during the 17th century. He is often considered a precursor to the rationalist school of thought, and his vast contributions to the fields of mathematics and philosophy, individually as well as holistically, helped pushed Western knowledge forward during the scientific revolution.
The method of doubt is a method developed by the philosopher René Descartes (1596 -1650) in his famous essay, Meditations on First Philosophy (1641). Descartes goal was to find a method which allowed him to find true knowledge.
In his First Meditation, Descartes concluded that many of his beliefs turned to be false. Consequently, this made him realise that many of the things he believed in were false. Since false beliefs can’t be count as knowledge, he questioned whether he had knowledge at all. For this reason, Descartes wanted to create a method to discover which beliefs are correct.

Kindred spirit! I am drafting a paper on Descartes, having anxiety and panic attacks just like you for the first time. I sit exams for the first time as a middle-aged adult who still has learned nothing but continues her quest. Your truthful expressions were consoling to me. Thank you for sharing. I have learned much more from this moment.

I just watched your video about your introduction to solipsism and I did not want to comment there considering the video is pretty old. I had the same "moment of realization" about 4 years ago when my highschool philosophy teacher talked about Descartes' method. Since then I've discovered Alan Watts who talks about, among other things, Buddhism and Hinduism solipsism, and phenomenology. These helped me make sense of that "mystical" expierience. I now am reading more about Indian philosophies.I recommend to everyone interested in these subjects to either listen to Alan Watts' lectures, you can find them here on RU-vid, or read Lester Embree's "Reflective Analysis: A First Introduction Into Phenomenological Investigation". Mind you, this book is difficult. Many thanks to you Northern Diaries for sharing your experience with us. I wish you all best of luck in your philosophical endeavours.

i really loved your concluding statements!! i actually myself also had some anxiety surrounding reality, particularly questions surrounding death and the afterlife, and questions about who i really was. I realized that my family, partner, clothes, future career choice, even philosophy itself (which i really enjoy) were not really me no matter how much i wanted them to be. i was only identifying with them because it made me feel like i had a sense of self. i learned that there is nothing i can do about my death, and i can never be certain if its just a blank abyss or some form of afterlife. even if it is a blank abyss.. i should be grateful for my opportunity to be alive, no matter how hard it gets, and i should be grateful that my body will decompose and give back to what i took from the earth, in the beautiful circle of life.... and my goal, and everyone else's goal, should be to give back for what we have been given.. its painful to see all this destruction happening around us..

Who am I ? That is an important philosophical question that has been asked from the Bhagwat Gita to the Matrix, from Buddha, Ramana to the Blade Runner. That is the fundamental of all philosophies. Not even, what is the universe, what is the meaning of life etc. Even those are secondary questions. Who am I? is first and foremost. As everything stems from the I. Lately I am realizing that the only thing I can do, only goal I can ever attain is to watch my breath, as much as possible.

For me there are two ways to happiness - the short term and the long term. Something like eating my favorite piece of candy will make me happy in the moment but seeing the progress I made toward my long-term goals makes me more proud of myself over the long term. You could say this is a more practical side of happiness.

While I agree that people don't see things in the same colors (my best friend/cousin is half-color blind), he still acknowledges 'blue' in both the Oceans/Lakes and Sky. He's no dummy. Anyway, I think there are still things that are universal, and factual. So I'm not completely sold on his philosophy. when I reached 5:57, remembered a somewhat similar experience. My family and I came to visit my relatives during X-mas, I spent most of my time observing my aunties and uncles because I couldn't fully understand Tagalog. Then I thought " I can see other peoples face through my eyes but how do they see my face? What can people see when they see me? Can I see through their eyes? Wouldn't I get scared if I can't recognize my face through their perspective? Can I recognize myself if I was seen from a distance, like a blurry silhouette of me? Why is my eyes' peripheral vision blurry but I can still depict an objects shape or silhouette?", then a ringing started in my ears but only I could hear it. Next thing that happened was me crying, I felt lonely because I was the only person who could see my perspective. It was scary for 7 year old me to think that way but I'm glad that Descartes systematic doubting was able to help me at least understand what I went through.

@nat804

so true. I was thinking about it, what if I'm just a collection of thoughts and feelings who thinks shes a person in the united states going to college and feeling pain and joy. but then i thought, the experiences i am having cause me these sensations, so they must be real enough. if i don't eat then i feel pain in my stomach and anxiety. if i'm anxious enough I get a pain in my chest. if i just go along it can't be too bad, I'm just going where the sensations lead me. if my parents are concepts I've made up in my head, then i'm very happy i have them and that their love feels so real. and if i'm a concept i guess it wouldn't be so bad. I've always loved stories, so maybe I'm just meant to enjoy them. but to you i'd just be a comment and a short collection of words, and to your computer i'm just a collection of light bursts through a cable sent to you under an ocean and into your internet router.

Kindred spirit, i have also had the panic attack. And i came to the same conclusion, that its okay to not know. We must live in the moment, as the moment is always the most beautiful moment in our lives. It is the flower in our circle of life. Its the most real thing we have. I have been thinking that whatever you decide to believe you must beleive with all your heart and you better know why. I am christian and i can tell you why i am. I have experienced the love of God and my Lord and savior Jesus Christ. I cannot reason or logically explain God nor can I provide you evidence to believe beyond doubt. I cannot convince you. No other philosopher can do this for their theories and explanations either. God wants us to believe by faith. He says to Thomas “blessed are those who believe and have not seen”.

While I do not entertain this method of thought, I have subjected myself to it for a period, and will say, it's enjoyable to pick on those under it. There are stronger strongholds of philosophy, and Decartes kinda just 'punks' out on accountability to things that ALL people can agree on; such as the Sky is Blue. He doubts even that - and I say, take him with a grain of salt.

Do they not understand that the God that atheist refer to is a conscious God/being? Can not God simple be "The creator of all that is", including consciousness, being, meaning, time/space, science, the universe etc? Or is it that the have issues with "believing", and deny that belief is necessary for our existence, ... unless they are solipsists. “Silence before being born, silence after death: life is nothing but noise between two unfathomable silences.” - Isabel Allende

Okay so let's start with truth. The first question he asked. I disagree. I think there are different levels of truth. First, the highest level of truth or rather the highest is Time Omni meta truth. That means something that is the highest truth anywhere and always. Then we go lower. Omni meta truth which is something that is the highest truth everywhere at one specific time or time period. Now we could go lower to Omni truth. Which is something that is truth everywhere but not the highest truth. Now we could go lower. This Rene is thinking at such a low level. The whole video as I imagine only gives a glimpse of Rene's philosophy. I think therefore I am implies that there is some meta being. Something that would give laws to us humans. Something that thinks us personal.
