Thanks ChickenCoop. My wife doesn't like to be in the sun too long so it is tough to get her out there. She is the reason I grow that plant, bitter melon. I don't eat it but she loves it. Think about the cucumbers you could grow on that trellis! Or green beans! My wife has been sick most of the summer and my garden has grown up in weeds. I'll get some space ready for some fall crops. i bet you are getting your fall garden either already in or getting ready to put it in. Thanks for stopping by! OAG

Thanks for your encouraging words. This trellis would be great for growing cucumbers, and perhaps small melons. Bitter melon is not a melon as we usually think of sweet melons. It truly is bitter, but those who grew up eating it really like it. I grow it for my wife and for giving away to her oriental friends. Thanks for commenting on this video. OAG

Great video! I LOVE your trellis. I hope to make something sturdy like this sometime. For now I have 30 plants trellising up 20 old handmade plant cages made from cut welded wire fencing and now now it's grown all over it. I should be just it's enough to support the fruits. We'll see though, I'm only doing it with what I have this year. I LOVE bitter melon! My husband's grandmother is Okinawan and he makes delicious pork and bitter melon. I can't wait to learn to make new dishes with them.

@marliem.5575
@marliem.5575 6 лет назад
We live in middle Georgia. We had a lot of rain last month and fortunately my crop has benefited from it. Goya, I will have to remember to call it goya, I like it better. I don't know for sure what variety it is, I can only hope it's the variety you have because your crops look fantastic! Our seeds were given to us by my husband's older co-worker from Thailand, she gardens as well and also gave us hot Thai pepper plants. The goya seeds she gave us two years ago sure didn't fail, every single one of them germinated! I finally grew them for the first time this year because I managed to make room in our small plot of land.

I have used it before! In fact, it helped me conquer my borderline Diabetes diagnosis and left many physicians scratching their heads when I told them my reversal was due to bitter melon juicing! I also used it in some stir fry dishes and was pleasantly surprised. For Juicing, I used our high-tech thingamajig juicer after cleaning out the pith and seeds. Then I add honey and lemon juice to help with the taste. I found after about the third dose of juice, I was so used to the taste that it was actually pleasant, reminding me of a more grassy flavor. I drink about 4 to 6 ounces a day, 3 days a week whenever I DO juice them, saving the juice in refrigerator for up to about 4 to 5 days. Beyond that, I read it's lost it's beneficial nutrients, in juice form. I also learned menstruating and pregnant women should NEVER consume it during their menstruation or pregnancy nor should bitter melon be given to children as it is powerful and could lead to major medical problems in those 2 people types. Otherwise, it's a great great great gift from God! Thanks for the reply. I have some containers too, but I'm liking the trellis design and I'll likely try that out when I can get my husband onboard as he controls all finances right now. LOL He works hard so I try not to ever ask for much. :) Thanks again you great human being! Your video has really helped give me confidence to turn my day dreams into reality! I praise God for you and your wife! Thanks from Las Vegas! Donya

Oh yeah, how often should I water this crop? Is it a plant that normally likes heat or cool weather? I can adjust my plant times here. So if it is more akin to a Tomato plant's temperament, or a vegie that prefers a cooler time of year say like broccoli or something, I can try it in whatever month here is best suited for a bitter melon's optimal weather preference. So I guess I'm asking 2 things: 1) how much watering. 2) does it like heat, moderate heat, cooler weather? Thanks in advance, OldAlabamaGardener!
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 7 лет назад
1) How much watering usually depends on what the plant is growing in, for example, if it is growing in the ground it may or may not need as much water. If it isgrowing in a large pot it may need frequent watering also depending on whether it is outside or inside. 2) Bitter melon is a warm/hot weather plant, but if you have it growing it can with stand some cooler temperatures but not a frost. I'm not sure if i gave you good answers, but watering has a lot of variables, depending on different circumstances. OAG

Thank you. And, yes a couple of plants can make quite a few mature fruits. Yep, they grow vines long and all over. I usually keep mine trimmed to only the top vines. What do you use the bitter melon for? Thanks for commenting on this video. OAG

We eat it several times per week, usually at breakfast mixed in with eggs, or dinner mixed in with thinly sliced beef. My wife is from the Philippines. Alabama weather seems to be good for growing them, when we were stationed in Texas and Virginia we had little luck growing them. Thanks

Thanks for another great video. It was very helpful to me. This is my first time planting bitter melon and I see now that I have to 1) give them more fertilizer than I originally thought and 2) put them on their own trellis. Do you have any problems with deer eating the vines? The trellis won't fit in the fenced garden so I'll have to fence around the bitter melon if it's attractive to deer. Also, thank you for the detailed description of the trellis. For now I'm just using a cattle panel arch but I will build a trellis like yours for next year.
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 7 лет назад
Diane, the deer do not eat the bitter melon vines, they are too bitter. No insects will eat it either. Yes, you do have to side dress the vines with some fertilizer. OAG
@dianeladico1769
@dianeladico1769 7 лет назад
Thank you. I've added the fertilizer and will get started on the trellis. I'm making a version of the trellis you show here. Thanks for giving such clear details so it's easy to follow. Hopefully it's not too late in the season. My seeds did not germinate and I had to order plants.

Hello Harold, were you in military service at Okinawa? I was stationed there from Feb 1961 to Oct 1963. I loved the people and the island culture. I'm thinking if you can grow cucumbers, then you should be able to grow Goya. It does require a lot of water to produce larger sized fruits. Tell me more about what fertilizer you are using and perhaps we can figure out what you might change to grow Goya better. Thanks for commenting on this video. OAG
@haroldirvine3680
@haroldirvine3680 7 лет назад
Yes I was stationed there with the military. I spent a little over 30 years on the "rock" between 1958 and 2001. Halve of that time was in the Air Force and the other half was as a civilian working for the Marine Corps. Water was not the problem as there is plenty of rainfall in that area. It was the cooler temp that was the main problem. I was using Miracle Gro as a fertilizer and some steer manure.
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 7 лет назад
Harold, I do use some Miracle Grow, but for "staying" power I prefer a granular fertilizer like 13-13-13 (triple 13). Yes, Goya is a hot weather plant and needs the warmer temperatures to grow well. Thanks for replying. OAG

You have some amazing looking Goya's! My wife (who is also Okinawan) is drooling right now. We're attempting to grow some right now, the plant has one fruit on there, but that's it. Not nearly as large as the ones you are producing, but we're keeping our fingers crossed we'll start getting some more to enjoy. Looking forward for tips and tricks with these guys. :) On a side note, spent close to 15 years on Okinawa - both in the service and as a civilian/contractor for the military there. Of course I don't know how you prepare it but I'll tell you how my wife does it. Cut the fruit in half length wise, Then scrape out the seeds and white pulpy material. Cut the halves cross wise into about one quarter inch thick slices. My wife says the pulpy material is very bitter. Now, I have heard, but have not tried it, that if you soak the slices over night in water, in the refrigerator, it will remove some of the bitterness.
