Thank you so much for doing this video! I find that your way of doing this is a lot safer (no lifting of pins) than some of the other tutorials online. Also using the other side of the logic board provides for a much cleaner way of diverting the wires.

Excellent video (as is all of the rest as well). I definitely like this approach to the Pocket mod, much better than the other solutions I've looked into. I do think you could have put the bivert under the cart slot like other mods instead of the speaker, but still, excellent guide! Thanks so much for your excellent tutorials, I always enjoy and appreciate watching them multiple times before doing the mod!

Will this Bivert mode change the shade of the backlight on all colours??, ive got a White, Yellow (or thought the Yellow looks like the Pea Soup Green of a DMG, is this correct??) and Blue back lights, so does this change the shader of these backlights?
@cheesewheel

To anybody going to attempt this mod: The points shown on the video are easier to solder to, yes, but they also put too much pressure on the screen & backlight so itll look all screwy after you stick it all back together. There's another video on RU-vid that shows some alternate solder points on the other side of the board. They are a pain in the ass to solder to, but they also leave the screen without pressure on it once you're done.

Hey Colin. Can I make a video suggestion? You should take an original DMG clear play it loud version and add LEDs to the internals so that when you power it on, it "lights up".
@Cyriaque

Nice video ! But i suggest using the other solder point for the backlight on the pocket. You screen will do some flickering with some games like pokemon if you don't change that, because the backlight take power at the same resistor that the screen at thoses solder points. Even if it's more complicated to instal, i think that's just a better solution. But thanks you for all the videos you make :) ! Sorry if my english is weird by the way.

Apperantly I am not all that great at modding small electronics, as I managed to accidentally cut more traces between the cpu and the connector for the ribbon cable... Is there any way to fix those broken traces? I've been trying to solder wires between the points the broken traces connect but its incredibly difficult. I have also tried running solder over the places where the traces are broken and that doesn't work apperantly.

Amazing job Colin, i love your videos and how instructional they are! Out of curiosity, have you ever done, or know of any kind of lighting kit for the NeoGeo Pocket (and/or Pocket Color)? I love that console and its screen is amazing, but the lack of light reaaaaaally hurts :\
@ThisDoesNotCompute
@ThisDoesNotCompute 8 лет назад
The NGPC uses the exact same technology in its screen as the Game Boy Color. (In fact, it's from the same manufacturer, just a different model number.) It should be possible to frontlight it, but I'm not aware of anyone making them specifically for the console. Backlights, unfortunately, aren't an option.
@NagaTen
@NagaTen 8 лет назад
Oh i see, i guess that makes sense. I know the screens on both were similar, but never knew they were made by the same manufacturer. Always learning! Then the backlight issue would be true for most color screens of this kind (Like WonderSwan, etc) , right? It is a shame, since those gorgeous colors end up so washed out with the frontlighting... Thank you Colin, have a nice weekend :)

Does anyone know of someone who offers installing the backlight and bivert mod into a DMG professionally? I own a beautiful condition Play It Loud transparent clear GameBoy that I would like this kind of enhancement done to. I have some soldering skills myself, but given that this is a transparent GameBoy, I'd like someone to do it that is a real expert not only at this specific mod, but also at soldering in general. The work has to look elegant because it will be at least partially visible through the case at all times.

Thanks for the video, been debating between this and the biverted DMG (playing GB games on a color or GB boy Colour isn't cutting it, even when holding down Left+B when powering on. Would you recommend this or the DMG's end result?
@ThisDoesNotCompute
@ThisDoesNotCompute 8 лет назад
+FireMrshlBill I think the bivert mod is more effective on the DMG's screen, but I prefer a backlit Pocket without the bivert mod (to keep the pixels grey instead of blue). It's really just a matter of personal preference.

@AndehX

Excellent video as usual Colin. Interesting way to install the bivert module. I've never seen that before. I'm guessing you came up with that method yourself? As for the installation though, I find it better to lift the pins on the cpu, as you don't need to cut any traces, which makes the mod reversable if you ever need to in the future. I originally used the pads on the back side of the motherboard, like you do, but found it quite tedious routing wires around the board, so I solder my wires directly to the pins of the chip and LCD connector. There are also ground and VCC points on the front side of the board too, so you don't need to route any wires around the board. Your installation does look alot neater than mine though.
@ThisDoesNotCompute
@ThisDoesNotCompute 8 лет назад
+AndehX Thanks! I've seen the method you described, and that's certainly another option that would work well. The Pocket's case is a lot tighter inside than the DMG so I was concerned about it not closing properly if the soldering was done to the front of the board. I figured that the way I showed would yield more consistent results.
@AndehX
@AndehX 8 лет назад
+This Does Not Compute yeah its easier to close the case up with your method, definitely, the only worry I had was that the wires being soldered directly behind the screen might end up putting too much pressure on it, creating pressure points on the screen, or even potentionally damaging the screen cable over time. Who knows....
@senshicat
@senshicat 8 лет назад
when cutting the pins, what am I actually cutting?
@ThisDoesNotCompute
@ThisDoesNotCompute 8 лет назад
+Rob Smith You're actually cutting the traces on the circuit board that go between the CPU and the pins. The traces are pretty thin, so just a couple of passes with the knife are all that's necessary. To be sure, you can check continuity using a multimeter.

Is this something you'd consider trying and doing another tutorial video on? I can't find any other videos on it.
@Redhotsmasher
@Redhotsmasher 8 лет назад
Hmm, doesn't look like a huge difference in this case. If I were to trick out a GBP I'd go with just the backlight because I prefer the gray pixels and the contrast is nearly the same, though the original DMG ("brick") looks amazing with a biverter, the contrast pretty much looks doubled in TDNC's video and the pixels look to be a nicer, darker, contrastier blue, so I'd definitely bivert that. I'm almost tempted to buy an old DMG and stick a backlight + biverter in it now (I still have my childhood GB lying around but A) It's a transparent one and B) sentimental value (got it when I was 6), so I'd just buy some less rare colour used somewhere, maybe black or the classic grey).
@ThisDoesNotCompute

That's how you normally install this module in a DMG, yes. The clearance inside the Pocket's housing is much tighter, though, and solder points are in different places. At the time this video was made, there were no dedicated modules designed for the Pocket. Installing it how I did was the most surefire way to actually make it fit.

A few weeks ago, i was unsuccessful at peeling off the reflective film, due to stupid ribbon cable coming apart. I quickly managed to destroy a perfectly fine Game Boy Pocket. So i decided to try it again....bought another Pocket. Backlight was successful. Then i made the mistake of not fully watching this, to see how ridiculous the Bi-Vert part would be. Well...after about 2 hrs, i successfully tacked down, and soldered everything in to place...turn on...crap...crappity crap crap. Screen was bunky...all full of lines, and electric static. So, once again...i said ok...screw this...Salvaged any parts i could, and then threw the rest away...And once again...destroyed a perfectly fine Game Boy Pocket. But i forgot, i could just re-solder the part of the board i had to cut, in order to put the bi-vert in. That would atleast give me a Game Boy Pocket, with a backlight.....but it was too late. My temper flared, and everything went into the garbage. Lesson is...stick with DMG-01 mods...cause Game Boy Pocket sucks. I HATE CURSIVE AND I HATE ALL OF YOU...IM NEVER COMING BACK TO SCHOOL, NEVER!

Useless. The VCC point on the backplate is not a solder point. Impossible to get the wire to stick.

Let me dumb it down for you, on my 2nd comment I made it clear that was talking to the other guy I think his name was Travii, then you snap back by calling me a moron. That was uncalled for. I didn't mean to anger you. I can tell you are having a bad day so I'll back off.
