Prof. Iadevaia selects a trainer RC plane in a kit form. The Bixler is a stable plane ideal for learning to fly RC planes. Using the construction as a lab portion of a college level Intro to Engineering course or as a project in a S.T.E.M. related science course, Prof. Iadevaia shows in depth step by step construction technique. For those new to RC flying and interested in building a kit, this video might convince you to select an RTF (ready to fly) version!
What you need to complete this project:
1 - motor BL-2216/6 2200KV
4 - 9g servos HK HTX-900
1 - 30 amp ESC BL-30A
1 - motor mount if you choose not to use the supplied one use Small Parts
CNC Easy Star motor mount
1 - 2.4 GHz 6 channel transmitter and receiver such as the Model FS-CT6B
1- servo Y cable
1- servo 6 inch extension
1 - 3S 2200mAh Lipo Battery
Also:
Solder, shrink tube, soldering iron, hand tools, servo tester, volt meter, extreme packing tape etc.
This is one example of how to assemble this kit. Use this method at your own peril. I will not be responsible for any problems you might have as a result of using this video guide,

Great video Professor! My Bix 3 kit had no instructions so I had to do research on build and technique and yours is the best. I, too, am a fan of Gorilla White Glue for the weight savings and strength. I've been a teacher for 50 years and appreciate your gift for teaching. Thank you for such great instruction!

This was a great video. I couldn't get a Bixler, but I got a BETA 1400 instead. It basically is the same model. You answered almost all the questions I had concerning assembly. Thanks! :)

I tried my foam glue (from HK), and it was VERY sticky. Got a lot of threads easily, but it seems to stick nicely, without hardening. That way the EPO is still flexible. It needs about 48 hours to cure, so it's a bit hard to get it perfect. I am a bit jealous of your finish after removing the tape, that looks awesome! Not that easy with foam glue. Too bad I didn't notice your motor mount before, I glued everything in. Might also have gotten some foam glue on the cables :P Hope the motor lasts!

I don't know much about the various glues and foam planes. I do know that Gorilla glue seems to work but it does foam up along the seams. I also know that hot glue seems to work well in almost every case as does Elmers glue. I have also used 5 min epoxy with success. My rule is test in somewhere on the foam and if it looks like its dissolving the foam don't use it. The more I am learning about RC planes the more it seems that a lot of experimentation is needed...but that's what makes it fun.

Great informative video. Thanks for taking the time to make this for a beginner like me.

you can use the stock mount, just remove some foam from around the inside of the mount area, i did and works great :D

Thanks for the help! I was very nervous when I saw that the fuselage was split. Btw. what do you mean with "defoaming"? (If that is what you are saying?). And what kind of glue did you use? I have ordered the glue called "Clear Foam Glue (Medium Cure) " from HobbyKing, will this work? I would want a smooth, nice surface as well :)

How did you go with using CF glue to hold the fuselage together rather than epoxy or hot glue? I have a kit form Bixler 2 and I cant decide which method to use. The last kit I put together I used epoxy and it was a little untidy for my taste so the hot glue is slightly ahead at the moment! You are the first person I have seen to use CF or Supaglue, instead. If it is a successful method I have to say I like the look of how easy it is. I would really appreciate the feed back if possible! I hope t

Did you glue in the motor mount with the same glue you used to glue your plane together? I just ordered one of those mounts because the bixler wooden mount broke. I have gorilla glue I was going to use for the new mount. How is it holding up for you?

if you turn the servos over then the cables run away from the servo instead of over them, hence shortening the wires in your case

Where did you buy the motor mount and what was the sku# or part for it, and any other items needed to mount the motor? Thanks! Jimmy, ARRL TS, WX9DX

Silly question how do you get the servo out of the plane if it fails if it is on the inside of the plane that you have glued together ?.

and make sure all your stuff works because once you glue it your going to be a hard time trying to get to them servos

As for the y cable, is there a certain size and which brand do you recommend? Also, is the 6 inch extension large enough? I couldn't find the 6 extension anywhere when I googled it. Any help on this would be appreciated.

I find it somewhat funny on unboxing videos people throw parts down like they are junk.

Was it a special reason for glueing just the engine area first?

Where can I find this Motor Mount? Could I use a D2826-6 2200kv Outrunner Motor on the Bixler using the motor mount that cames with the kit?
