Bix3 Motor Installation Smallpartscnc Adaptor review

Link to the motor mount from Smallpartscnc.com smallpartscnc.c...
In this video I incorrectly state that the motor is a 2638 size when it is a 2836
Typically you would need to cut off the top portion of the motor pod to remove the motor and motor mount. Using my method you don't need to cut off the motor pod. You will split the center seam to assist in mount removal. I installed the Turnigy Aerodrive 2836 1500kv motor over the stock smaller 1400kv motor. I wanted a touch more speed and punch. I also installed one of the Hobbyking 40a esc's to handle the extra load. With a 8x6" prop it pulls 31a, a 8x4" pulls 24a.
I'll be doing battery longevity tests between the two props. It's nice to be able to choose efficiency over power.
The main reason for the motor change was the stock motor was horribly out of balance out of the box. I would like it if it was balanced but it's a little under powered if you aim the model 45degrees up for a climb- it peters out...

Good video. I burnt out my stock BIX3 motor after a few hours of FPV flights. Found this video in a search for a replacement motor and then went out and purchased your setup. I'm looking forward to a bit more speed for FPV. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for the vid. Got the same motor and mount to install in mine and watching this has probably saved me from more than one critical error!
@7demo7review
@7demo7review 9 лет назад
ElMattbos So glad I could help! In retrospect I probably should have cut 1" off foam motor collar because the motor is so far back when using this mount. Moving that weight 1" forward might help not torque against the motor tower. I crashed after this and ripped the motor pod off- all repaired now as good as new...

Excellent job Sir. My Bix 3 sounded like a weed wacker when I wound it up. I was just about to toss is out with the trash and came along your vid. I ordered my Smallpartscnc.com motor mount and can't wait to work on the new project. Thanks for the detailed how to video.

Hey Demo7, I wanted to thank you for the video . I followed your vision for the Bix 3 but after taking out the stock motor I wanted to also take out the motor mount then decided to cut a quarter inch off the CNC adaptor. I didn't need to cut in to the EPO . SO thanks for showing me(us ) the way to go.
@7demo7review
@7demo7review 9 лет назад
I wish I though of that! If I had to do it again I would cut 1 inch off the phone to that the CNC motor adapter sits inside of. This would shorten the length of the motor assembly and keep more weight forward

Good video. Well explained on how to get the job done! Its worth to mention that the SMALLPARTSCNC adaptor works very well, the guy that makes them is TERRY and you can find his shop on ebay makes mounts for many different models.

Hi demo, did the same thing but the CG was way out. I then attempted to put the new motor in about the same position as the old motor by cutting the motor pod off back to the vertical support, and regluing in the cnc mount. CG was almost back to normal. 2600 3s solved the CG problem. With a 9 x 6, it goes like a pylon racer.
@7demo7review

sounds good. A lot of people just add a lot of battery weight to compensate. If I were to do it again I'd cut 1" off the motor pod

Thanks for the video. I ordered a Bix 3 last week and after seeing your video I ordered the motor mount yesterday. I will install the CNC motor mount right off the bat instead of the stock one. I will most probably install the stock motor 1st and then switch to a MTN.

If I were to do it again I would chop off 1/2-1" of the foam tube the CNC part goes into. This will help with the tail heavy nature of the plane and will help the cantilevered weight that is against the rear wing mount. I had a crash (fixed now that tore the whole motor pod and rear wing mount off. I think the weight hanging off the back so far didn't help. Good luck with your build!
@carlpelletier860

7demo7 As you mention, I am worried about it being tail heavy so I will cut off 3/4" of the motor tower. Thanks for tip. I'll let you know how it works out later this month when I build it.

Very good, I'll be intrested to hear how it works out. I added a carbon spar to my horizontal stabilizer so my tail is even heavier. I have my 2 2200 batteries all the way in the nose to compensate

If it helps I just finished my bix build. I used this same motor but it fit fine on the stock mount. I had to drill out two holes on the mount to line up the holes with the motor. However it fit fine. I'm running a 6 by 4 prop but going to test others. Just did my maiden yesterday. Windy buy fun. However in mid flight my fpv converted foam pod fell off and made the cog tail heavy. I barely got it on the ground. So sketchy to fly with it super tail heavy. Make sure to replace magnets with bigger ones or secure the pod more if you add weight to it. Thanks for vid and help.

Very nice motors :) Maybe a stupid question but why most of people do not use carbon fibers prop on their plane? Enjoy the last days of 2014
@7demo7review
@7demo7review 9 лет назад
Not really sure, I'd like to try one though. The reasoning I didn't for multirotor was the cost and they're not as efficient as most people think
@StereodreieckRC
@StereodreieckRC 9 лет назад
7demo7 A carbon has way less flex and a better efficieny but the costs are higher (which is not really a problem on a pusher plane. I tested the Volantex Ranger EX Prop, the Graupner Carbon and the APC on my Ranger EX and could see the difference between the crappy stocker and the high quality Graupner.
@JuampixDDD
@JuampixDDD 9 лет назад
they don't run them in multirotors because they cause too much vibrations, i think that's why they don't use them in planes too

shows, with ecalc, 8x6 prop on that motor over powers the motor the motor power is maxx 370w Specs. Max Loading: 31A Max Power: 370W beware running a 8x6 prop pulls 392.5w

@maximosebastian1782
@maximosebastian1782 5 лет назад
The video was very instructive on how to removed the motor mount but my one thing is that this airplane is heavier than the bixler 2. I thing it was better to upgrate to a carbon fiber or balsa wood motor mount to reduce some weight from it. Thats my personal opinion.

Hi Demo, My bix3 is now set up in a similar way to yours. I was amazed at how much weight the motor adds to the rear. To balance this out I had to add approximately 100g to the front. It now makes the bix quite a heavy plane. Do you think this will affect the longevity of the motor? Can you give me an idea of how much weight you have added. Cheers Stuart

I standardly use two 2200 mA battery packs, In the nose of the airplane this balances out perfectly, I did have to modify the foam just slightly

Whats the point in the collar going all the way into the inside of the plane when the motor mounts on the outside of the bracket? Doesn't that push back the weight as well? From what I hear, its already tail heavy. I'm ordering my Bix3 in a few weeks and I'm sure sooner or later I will want to replace the motor.
@7demo7review
@7demo7review 8 лет назад
If the inside collar wasn't there the motor would easily break off. If I did it again I would cut one inch off the foam motor mount to move the weight forward a bit
@bddanford
@bddanford 8 лет назад
it just looks like the motor should go on the inside of it, keeping it positioned in the original spot.

If I'm buying the bix 3 ARF then I would have to assemble it myself. I plan to use this same motor so right of the bat I will mod the mount to fit this motor. If there anyway to mod the existing mount to fit this motor? Could the motor fit on the original mount in its original location or could slide all the way to the end? What are your thoughts or is it worth spending the extra on this?
@7demo7review
@7demo7review 9 лет назад
You would need to hollow out the foam tube I believe. It would be more ideal to keep the stock location because the CNC adaptor puts a lot of weight toward the rear of an already tail heavy plane. The other thing you could do is cut about half the foam motor tube off and use the CNC mount- this brings some of the weight back to the front

hey demo 7 I have a question. I'm new to elec. motors and wanted to know which wire goes to which esc wire. No instructions for the motor wires and no instructions on the wiring for the esc. The esc instruction just say to soldier the wire together. which wire?
@7demo7review
@7demo7review 9 лет назад
The short answer is- it doesn't matter. Brushless motors can't be shorted out by improper wiring. Basically plug in the motor in any way, test the motor by running it. If the motor is running backwards, swap any two wires to switch the running direction.
