In this video I visit my friend Don who bought a Bixpy motor kit for his Hobie PA14. Together we unbox, install, and test the motor on his Hobie Pro Angler 14. I also packed my Bixpy along and attached it to a new iSUP. We had a lot of fun. Don says he loves his new Bixpy setup.
NOTE: My buddy Don paid full price for his Bixpy...it wasn't sponsored or discounted. I too paid for my initial Bixpy, but then became an Ambassador after falling in love with the product. I believe this video is non-bias and a fair representation of the product. Hope you enjoyed the video.

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ru-vid.comUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

Need to add a pivot point on the shaft next to the bottom of the kayak. So if you randomly hit the bottom or kelp it will pop up without destroying the motor/ jet drive.

DONALD 2020 Main thing for “you” is getting into the shallows. Not everyone hangs in the shallows. Most of my friends use kayak to run offshore. I’m usually going out in deep water. Heck I’m even using my kayaks for scuba diving now. People can easily shorten the mount shaft if they want it running skinny. People shorten trolling motor shafts all the time and this would be even easier. I just have never found the need. However, I plan to discuss short shaft options with Bixpy since some viewers have requested it.

@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 5 лет назад
I told Bixpy about my Hobie Pro Angler 14 speed results and they too were surprised, but we had two GPS speedometers running. One on fish finder and other via phone which has proven reliable. I filmed it with KPH as unit of measure because it is more accurate than MPH when using the phone app. So the Hobie PA14 with Bixpy I believe is definitely capable of higher speeds than advertised. As for runtime I get 5hrs running mixed speeds 1-5. The battery typically covers me for a day of kayak fishing. I don’t run speed 10 all the time.
@KayakDIY

When they come up with a short-shaft model, I'll likely get one. The major purpose of a kayak is getting into skinny water. One encounter with a submerged log with this long shaft mounted on a 300+ lb Hobie PA14 at 2-4 mph will have you $$$tranded. Also, all the batteries that you see for these applications are rated in Ah. Bixpy rates their battery as 378 Wh. The conversion is 31.5 Ah. Why not advertise in a language their customers a familiar with? Love the concept. But I'll save my $1200 for a shorter version. Would REALLY love to see one with spot-lock.

Very cool boat. And the Bixpy drive is slick. I’m currently running an Old Towne 14 foot/3 person canoe with a Minnkota motor and this is a very elegant single person dedicated fishing alternative. My setup altogether was about $1,000. Yours looks to be about $2,500. STILL way cheaper than a ‘real’ boat, you can go where they can’t, and you can enjoy the peace and quiet and be stealthy. Also the unboxing was awesome and I think necessary to show the setup of this unique product. Great video all around and ignore the haters! Subbed.

@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 5 лет назад
*Why Must The Shaft Length On The Bixpy Mirage Mount Be That Long?* Some viewers think the mount should be shorter and draft less. The motor drops into the Hobie well at a slight angle. If it were any shorter then the mount wouldn't be universal for "ALL" Hobie pedal kayaks. If the shaft were shorter the top gray plug portion of the mount would hit on some Hobies and prevent the motor from fitting into the drive well. Even when i built homemade motors for Hobies I ran into this same dilemma. So the shaft length must remain the same length in order to reliably fit ALL Hobie kayaks. Hopefully this makes sense.

If I owned one I'd be cutting down that pipe and drive shaft before I ever put it in the water. And that's a whole lot of time and hassle, and would almost certainly require machine tools. That unpacking angle is awful, you could have used a small portable table to unpack. I am left wondering at this early stage, when are they going to have time to charge the battery.

I see no reason for that drive to sit so deep in the water. Right at flush to the bottom should be all it needs, why stick it a foot deeper? Kayaks are designed for shallow water.

Very cool video, seem like awesome little power units, you guys need to be careful putting these powered boats in the water without them being registered, never know when the FWC or a Marine Sheriffs unit or the Coast Guard might show up. The FWC actually has fined another channel that reviews kayaks and power setups for kayaks. The dude has posted about 10 videos of him being in the water on a powered kayak without no Florida stickers on the boat. The FWC used the videos as evidence, so just be careful what you post......
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 3 года назад
I go sailing with a USCG official and know several FWC officers. I’ve collaborated with them on clean water efforts. Our channel in past year was one of the largest financial donor for Calusa Waterkeepers organization. We also got a pretty good reputation in the community for feeding the homeless via our channel sponsorships. Many kayaks I film aren’t mine and we are testing project ideas before registering. I understand your concern. Most of the issues stem from youtubers being targeted by viewers who report and want to stir up reactions. There is a huge problem right now with RU-vidr families having Swat called on them as pranks. It is dangerous and people can die. I have a 2 yr old and one of my greatest fears is having a viewer do that. I did a live video few months ago and viewer threatened my family members and gave out their addresses. Live streams are the most dangerous because some viewers want to see a reaction live so that is when they call police with fake tips.

He kind of glosses over the paddle board Bixby setup - just flies through it. Nothing on how the battery is attached. Nothing on what if you capsize it. Apparently it only fits certain boards with a fin. Yet the title is Hobie Kayak.

Why are there no thrust numbers for the Bixpy? Not even on their site do they state the thrust/power rating. But, I agree with others though... $1100 is steep for a drive on a 'kayak'. Enjoy the paddle, or pedal... or switch to a powerboat to get around in.
@KayakDIY

Power boats are not easy to store, transport, maintain, nor are they typically that cheap....at least not one I would trust that much. I know because I’ve owned several since moving to florida. I like that Bixpy and my kayak/iSUP/small Jon boat can fit in my small garage and be transported with smaller vehicles. Also most pedal kayaks are $2,000+. However, that is my opinion. As for answering your question I believe they estimated it at 34lbs. However, It feels “SIGNIFICANTLY” more powerful than my Minn Kota C2 Endura 30 trolling motor. The prop pitch and cone I think equates to the significant performance difference. Not to mention Bixpy is easier to mount due to large mount library and being so lightweight. Other benefit of Bixpy is it is a sealed system. The motor was designed even for scuba applications. Trolling motors are often not sealed and if you flip them the water runs down the shaft into the motor and corrodes internals. Bixpy is sealed and the battery floats. When I look at other motors and options on the market I have the opposite reaction....I think the price is cheap. Torqeedo and some other “motor kits” I think are too expensive and don’t justify the expense based on alternatives. Bixpy I love and have never regretted my purchase. Those who have tried mine have bought one shortly after. Brandon in the video was a subscriber who messaged me and asked to try the Bixpy. Brandon lived in the area. He tried it out and I simply asked if I could film him testing it. The review and video is non-bias and his reaction is genuine. I told him to give his honest opinions and reaction. He loved it so much he bought one immediately when he got home. Anyone in SW FL area can message me and I will happily let them try mine out. Thanks for commenting Bobber. Your opinion isn’t wrong....it is just your opinion. We all value things differently. Everything I said is my opinion and is based on my knowledge of the product after owning/using it for 3yrs. 🙂👍

This would be the worst product promotion I have seen, why didn't you show the whole graft, instead of a bit of it on the water, not any shots of the whole kayak or the blow up board. I guess your name DIY means I will have to go and DIMS.I hope you weren't paid for yopur so called promotion. Next time I hope you do better.

Loser. Try to do better. I challenge you. I don’t take payments. I only take commission from sales I drive. Last month this motor kit company paid my mortgage in sales commissions. I would like to see you do better….in literally any product promotion video. The companies are actually stoked with the video performance.

@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 3 года назад
On some kayaks a typical trolling motor and your heavy battery won’t work well. I know...I’ve tried it. Also most trolling motors shafts aren’t sealed so don’t flip the kayak over or your motor internals will be a rusty mess. Runtime on your trolling motor won’t be as good as Bixpy either. Cheaper isn’t better always....it is just cheaper. That being said of course I could build something pretty cool for less. I would start with a 4.85lb watersnake asp t24 motor and then either build or purchase a LiFePO4 battery to power it. That motor is light enough it can be mounted on most kayaks easier than others. Only problem is it still isn’t a sealed motor, also wouldn’t have a battery which floats or a wireless remote. Bixpy is just really convenient for enthusiasts like myself. I’ve owned mine for 3yrs+ now. Nothing wrong with going cheaper though. I love building things.

You could easily shorten the shaft mount. It had to be that length in order to fit all Hobie style pedal kayaks. This one Bixpy mount fits them all even the other brands using Hobie’s fin pedal drive design. So you can shorten the shaft but then it won’t be as universal. Hope that info helps.
