Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at a recommendation Björk Bachelorette. This video has all the components of great storytelling but also hits hard with it's dramatics in visuals, lyrics and heavy string work sonically. Find Out what I have to say about Björk and this great video!
** I was so involved in the visuals to this video that I forgot to mention that the arrangements with sound specially the string work, piano are awesome creating a lot of dramatics! **

Björk is one of the greatest experiences one can do in a lifetime. She's a complete artist, musically, lyrically and visually, her mesmerising vision of things carries your mind into her parallel universes, where are weird stories never heard that needed to be told. Even if it's not easy to choose, Hyperballad and All Is Full Of Love are superb representative of her work
@iethergy

I’d say songs like Family are now more representative of her creative vision and how sublime she has become in her craft of making music

This is one of my favorites by Björk! Such beautiful imagery: "I'm a tree that grows hearts, one for each that you take; You're the intruder's hand, I'm the branch that you break..." Yes, she is a bit of an acquired taste, but this is a great place to start!

Nice reaction, Derek! I recommend "Hyperballad", "Joga", "Pagan poetry", "Unravel", "Black lake". Björk is another dimension in art and creativity.

HI Dereck, loving your reactions, your opinions are well thought out. Björk is a one-of-a-kind artist, she is other worldly. Try "All is Full of Love" also from the same album "Homogenic". Her work has gotten more complex with each subsequent album. If you want you could start with her debut album, which is more accessible to those who are not exposed to her music.
@sweeperboy
@sweeperboy 4 года назад
I would like to second this, and add how glad I am that Dereck has reacted to her. What Dereck is I think struggling a bit with is that it's so very different - and quite rightly so. The "problem" with Björk's work - particularly in recent years - is how complex and otherworldly it is, and increasingly so - which makes it harder for new people to get into her work. Starting out with the earlier work from the "Debut", "Post" and "Homogenic" albums is definitely the right thing to do. "All is Full of Love" is an excellent place to go next, especially due to the stunning video and her lovely vocals. The other song worth checking out - if only to get it out of the way and as it's more accessible - is her biggest and award-winning hit "It's Oh So Quiet", which is in fact a cover of a 1951 song by Betty Hutton (itself a cover of "Und jetzt ist es still" a few years earlier by Horst Winter, a German singer). It's a very different style of song and the public loved it which is why it did so well, but it's not necessarily as popular among Björk's own fans because it is so different to much of her work and has a more commercial jazz sound. However, Björk's early pre-fame work was largely in the jazz genre, so it's not necessarily such a big stretch for her. Speaking of vocals, again, with Björk the "problem" for many people is that they are not immediately necessarily accessible in the standard manner of a pop song. But stick with it, and you will begin to appreciate her artistry even in a purely audio format. She uses next to no vibrato, and she belts with a soaring, ethereal quality overlaid with that wonderfully thick Icelandic accent. She is a true artist and a visionary, and I'm glad she's being looked at again by people who did not see her the first time around.

From this video, I got that the book was her life and she gave it to the publicist to be shared with the world..but the publicist exploited and profited off of her “book” so she wanted no part of it anymore. But remember, she sold her “book” aka her life’s story so everything she once was wasn’t hers anymore therefore it was erased from her in the end.

It’s an autobiographical narrative. She’s discussing her rise to fame and the way she’s sold as a commodity, deals being done without her approval, in the end people lose interest quickly and she rejects all artifice and stage to return to her natural roots. Björk is one of our greatest living artists. 💙

LOVE Bjork. This video was created by Michel Gondry who has done many of her videos as well as videos for Kylie Minogue, The White Stripes and Daft Punk. He has an incredible imagination that lifts the art of music video to a new level. A music video can be so much more than just a singer doing choreography with a bunch of dancers or a literal interpretation of the lyrics.

If you like surrealism you must Watch Madonna 1995 "Bedtime Story", a song co-written by Bjork for Madonna and one of the most expensive videos of all time (cost $5 million at the time). The video it's inspired on surrealistic paintings and it's part of MOMA permanent art collection.

The book tells about her story from the time she opens it but her story turns into telling about finding a book that tells about her story from the time she opens it -lol. So the story tuns into an inward helix, becomes a narrower version of itself at every turn and vanishes at the end.

Thank you for being one of the only people who actually paid attention to the story being told in this video. This reactor only focused on the music, and the story line itself requires very, very, very close attention. It's so complex. I've probably watched this video over 500 times and it still hurts my brain to this day! Also, can't blame him for being distracted by the song and her voice. It's a fucken Symphony. Pure magic.

Obviously this is a Björk submission for a James Bond song - many people and bands submit each time. This would have worked fine - Timewise this would fit with "Tomorrow Never Dies", and I know this was also used for a Bertolucci film, but that is inconsequential ;-)

love your channel. probably somebody already said it by now, but the clip is a sequel to the video of another track - isobel, from the same album. you will know why when you see it. keep open and take bjork from the beginning of her journey and how she evolved musically and visually (she always has THE word on what she wants from her videos, finds the right people for her vision and has made many of the most iconic music videos for some 3 decades now). you have a lot to go through, and you will find many fascinating things (visually and musically). i am not necessarily referring to reaction videos, as they will surely have fewer clicks :). just listen and watch her for yourself. she will be considered one of the most important artists of the 20eth/21st century in the history books. cheers to many more interesting discoveries from a music lover across the pond! :)

Bjork is unique, but a lot of her appeal is also with the great videos. 'Hidden Place' ... I showed that to a class of Japanese college students during Halloween. They were both fascinated - and it scared the sushi out of 'em. The music is all good. But for story telling ... I prefer Joni Mitchell (especially in the 70's) and Donald Fagan (Steely Dan - especially the whole album, 'Aja').
