She actually spent a lot of time on an actual boat when recording this album. And she was inspired by the boat horns creating harmonies. So the whole album was based off Horns and Brass instruments. It was meant to feel kind of tribal and primitive. And Timbaland helped produce 3 songs, Earth Intruders, Wanderlust, and Innocence.

I love that that's what ties it together because it's so over the place, it's really comforting haha!

If you happen to do Biophilia, perhaps you could use some extra knowledge: She wrote each song with a science, biology, astronomy or physics concept in mind, and the album as a whole was launched along an app with interactive games. She also used some quite interesting instruments, and even created an educational programme that took place in a couple of countries for kids to learn about music and science at the same time.

Volta is definitely a love or hate album but everyone agrees that the accompanying tour for the album, Voltaic tour, is one of her best live performances ever. the things that confuse and confound ppl about this album (how the tracks are so very different and how it pulls you into different directions) - these things are what I love so very much about it. In some of her later works, the cohesiveness and theme can get me "lost" because my mind can wander. But with Volta, she doesn't let this happen. The music is constantly "waking you up" by changing things up. I love that! Definitely one of her more under-appreciated albums for sure. This has only just recently been surpassed for me by her next album Biophilia, which is now my fave album of all time (but took me years of listening to it to get it up there haha). You're a great reviewer Benn, keep them coming, your reactions are bomb cute fella ;) Can't wait for you to do Biophilia! :D

I’ll admit Volta is not an album I visit often, even though Wanderlust, The Dull Flame of Desire, Vertebræ by Vertebræ and Declare Independence slaps. And it’s a shame since it sees Björk speak about social issues (Earth Intruders being about people taking fossil fuels I think, & Declare Independence is about telling Greenland to become independent from Denmark). The singer featured on The Dull Flame of Desire and My Juvenile is Anohni. She’s an amazing and talented trans artist, who’s album Hopelessness I’d really recommend listening to. It’s a very intriguing, gorgeous yet gruesome album (the title track always gets me crying, so be warned). Also can wait to see your reaction for Crystalline and Mutual Core on Biophilia! ✨✨✨

Volta album is a journey. like you, at first few songs it falls short for me, but it always takes me back to the theme of the album and it makes me love it more (maybe because it is the water sounds and horns/brass sounds). If you see VOLTAIC (the album's live concert) i think you would love it. The rendition of her past songs tied in to the theme of this album and the sounds are so earthy and organic. I think this was the first album where you kind of need the visuals of the photoshoots and stuff from that era to get it fully. Remember 2007 was a time of bright colors and electro and tectonik and that kind of sensibility of like neon lights in a forrest. This album is kind of that eclectic vibe of being a shaman in the age of clubbing and kind of taking from many cultures and losing yourself in references. Also she lived in a boat in london when she was making this album. This to me is that like early tumblr neon-nature kind of vibe of bloggers and art galleries. Also it’s her first dips into how you can mix nature and technology, only way more optimistically (the apocalypse was no where as near as today). She was experimenting mostly on how to play this live as a kind of Bjork style rave. You really need to see Voltaïc (the live version of this album) to get it properly. It was an all girl brass band, a react table (some pre iPad visual synth) and bright basic colors and fire and flags and shaman outfits. Fucking amazing. The live concerts of Volta where totally like seeing a very powerful witch jumping all over and belting with the power of the whole earth like an energy demon assembling its army to go plant trees and flags all over.

Volta is a grown for me, because it's so strange(Medúlla was to be too, but i love it at the first sight), but i love strange things, so now, i love Volta so much. The next album is Biophilia, an "natural" album, speaking about lyrics(and some instruments). She does a LOT of stuff for this album(inclusive, a limited physical version that i can't find anywhere). Well we've arrived at Volta, an album that is a Totally different experience from the rest. Def took me a few years to fully immerse myself in and allow it to Sink in. The Style and presentation are Like Reading a Book assigned by ur teacher. You peruse it, glance at a few pages throughout the story but somehow never fully delve into it ,Until ur actually ready to read it (Listen to it 💯) and Slowly open urself to see what the story holds. Volta is weak but Voltaic is GORGEOUS! Check out Hyperballad live in Paris (Voltaic).

Doesn't make sense you ask him to react to a song from Post when he is reacting to songs from Volta.

@@nomi.hagen. I’m not asking to react, I’m just saying that the album is weak but the tour was dope. Every time she tours she changes the instrumentals according to the whole mood of that specific era. The version of that song in that specific era is gorgeous.

@@alessandropizzato3700 right with you - i kept thinking if he saw some of the tracks he liked on Voltaic, he’d faint with one leg in the air. Some of what he said in critique she hits back with there. Fuc*ing energy.

Its proper to have a 9 volt battery in your mouth for the ultimate listening experience. And if you don't end up on a watch list after hearing "Declare Independence", your didn't dance hard enough to it.

Volta is, for me and for a lot of people, Bjork's worst album. It doesn't mean that it's bad but i would say it isn't as great as the rest of her discography. I love The Dull Flame of Desire and Declare Independence tho
