They were not originally Jewish and till recently had no one to convert them but for many, many years they practiced Judaism even though they were not Jewish. A man and woman can live together and yet until they actually go through the process of marriage they are not actually married even if the "feel" married. There are 2 parts to any transition; the feeling one has about it and the mechanics of doing it. Both are necessary and important.

I don't like making comments on videos, and I don't do this often, so I'm just going to post all of my thoughts on this video and some of the other comments here. It is very sad that this documentary, which could have been an entirely inspiring experience, promotes so much contention and disrespect for dialogue. We had the opportunity to see exactly one Orthodox rabbi give a snippet of his (our) point of view. The woman who narrated had her own bias and the unfortunate theme of the last segment of the program was to promote her opinion and ideology by belittling another ideology. When I saw the sincerity and inspiration of the Abayudaya in this video, I was actually jealous of them. It was so refreshing to see people who strive to be close to Ha-Shem, who yearn to learn about and practice the mitzvos that we all take for granted. Almost every Jew that I know would feel the same way. Anyone that felt otherwise would be considered by the rest of us to be ignorant and backward. I don't want to give any more attention than I have to in response to those comments claiming that the Jews who don't want to accept the Abayudaya are racist. It's simply nonsense. Black and white racism is a problem but it is not a Jewish thing and has absolutely nothing to do with this topic. While I was inspired by the Abayudaya and would love to be associated with them, I also thought about the issue of proper conversion. As an adherent to authentic rabbinic Judaism, which has thousands of years of precedent, I do not believe that Conservative and Reform rabbis have the right to modify the rules for the purpose of convenience. We have a concept in the Torah called "mamzer". It is not a very good condition for someone to find oneself in. If someone's parents were from a forbidden relationship that forbids them to be married, their child becomes a mamzer. A mamzer is not allowed to marry within the general population and all of his children become mamzerim. Someone once commented that it's not fair to the kid. What did he do? Why do his parents' actions get to ruin his life? I answered that a mother who takes drugs when she's pregnant and causes her child to be born with birth defects is also effecting the child. What did he do? Why do his parents' actions get to ruin his life? In traditional Judaism, we believe that a person's spiritual existence is as real as their physical existence. Just because the ramifications of our actions are not perceived as readily and concretely in spiritual terms as they do in physical reality, it does not mean they are not just as real. Someone who doesn't understand physics will not relate to obscure theories about multiple dimensions, I certainly don’t. As physical beings, our perceptions are limited by physical limitations. If we consider the possibility that there could be truth to this argument. Judaism, Orthodox Judaism, the version of Rabbinic Judaism that has been practiced following concrete Talmudic guidelines and protocol for thousands of years, holds the belief that there is a spiritual realm in Judaism that exists with its own reality. The normative Jewish religion as set down by the rabbis who codified the Talmud nearly 2,000 years ago established a very detailed standard which is flexible but not to the extent deemed by the offshoots of our religion within the past century and a half. Reform Judaism holds that the rules are arbitrary and that the Torah is not divine in nature. Conservatism was created by people who could not accept the complete rejection of Judaism by the Reform but could not tolerate the stringent practices of Orthodoxy in a modern world. They sought to maintain the traditions in a palatable way and innovated justifications using statements from Talmud to lend legitimacy to their agenda. Like the Reform Movement, the Conservatives’ approach was not condoned by the scholarly leaders, in and of itself a disqualification based on the guidelines of the Talmud. (Forgive me for not quoting a concrete source. If you were willing accept the statement in the video of the older Conservative rabbi that found no reason to reject converts who do not accept to keep the laws of the Torah from any of the literature that “he consulted”, I ask that you give me the same courtesy.) That being said, is it really fair for a break-off group, well-meaning or not, to make demands on the original group? We have standards that we have lived by, we believe, from the time the Torah was given to Moses at Sinai. We believe that G-d transmitted an oral code together with the written Torah. We believe the Oral Torah was transcribed with fidelity in the Talmud. Faithful adherents trust in the precedents set forth in each generation by rabbis who, by general who have proved themselves in both scholarship and piety. The meat and potatoes of Orthodox Judaism is the same as it has been. Those of us who choose to maintain the religion as our ancestors did, that revere the generations before us who risked their lives to preserve their values, reject the idea of changing the rules for any reason. I do not impose my religious beliefs on people who are not Jewish. I do not impose my views on Jews who consider themselves Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, irreligious, etc. You are all welcome to live as you choose. This is not the first time in history that the laws of Judaism were modified to accommodate an agenda. There was a group of Jews once upon a time who rejected the rabbinic tradition as well as the validity of the continued practice of the Biblical laws set forth in the Torah. Maybe you’ve heard of them. They’re called Christians. I have nothing against Christianity but I do not consider Christianity to be Judaism. I respect people of Jewish descent who subscribe to other philosophies. I don’t tell them what they should believe. I think it is reasonable to ask that they respect my way of life as well. Live and let live. This documentary was disrespectful and dismissive of my beliefs. It did not present any logical argument to justify their agenda. They have no intelligent rationale to support their viewpoint that Orthodox Jews should accept Conservative standards so they resort to vilifying us without even providing us an opportunity to explain our point of view. This approach is unscholarly, disingenuous and immature. Shame on you! Shame on those of you who would treat your fellow Jews like this because we are true to our traditions. Shame on those of you who would judge without seeing through the rhetoric. Watch it again and pay attention. No Orthodox Jew said anything negative whatsoever about the Abayudaya people in this video, yet so may haters in the comments have been quick to say the most horrible things about us. Further, they have included all Jews of European descent in their anti-Semitic ranting. Thanks for inciting them. I, an Orthodox Jew, have nothing but immense admiration and respect for the sincerity of their desire to become part of the Jewish people. No Orthodox Jew has denied them any inalienable right as a human being. They deserve to be treated with dignity. They deserve to receive humanitarian aid to provide them with a better standard of living (and so do their neighbors who are not interested in becoming Jewish, I might add). No Orthodox Jew has even denied them to right to consider themselves Jewish according to Conservative standards. In a rather disrespectful and unbecoming fashion, the people who put this video together have demanded that Orthodox Jews accept a conversion rite that does not meet Orthodox standards. The Conservative rabbis who went on the expedition were well aware that this would become an issue. If they did not advise the Abayudaya people in advance that the Orthodox community would not recognize their Conservative conversion, they did them a tremendous disservice. The Abayudaya people are obviously committed. I believe they are sincere about their desire to practice authentic Judaism and that they would rise to the challenge of living up to Orthodox standards given the opportunity. (I think they may be rejected, though, by the same people who have decided that we are Khazar imposters, since they are apparently the recognized authority on the definition of a Jew.) I for one would be proud to call the Abayudayas my brothers.

Thank you for sharing this great video. Many of the cultures in Western Africa have had a Jewish past that was given up at the tip of a sword to both Islam & Christianity. It is likely that European Jews are descended from converts and that is perfectly beautiful too.

A truly beautiful film. Cried through parts of it. I am a cultural Jew and an agnostic. However I question the idea of converting them. They are Jewish already. I guess these people wanted some type of confirmation. O.k. But since they believed in the Torah without rabinnical Judaism, perhaps they were Karaite Jews and should have been offered the choice rather then the assumption that western Rabinnical Judaism represents the only true form of Judaism.

All Jewish people everywhere are part of my tribe.

They are not africans but Isrealites.

They weren't always Jewish their cemetery proves that. With that being said they are Jewish now and should be accepted as such. At worse they might have to go through an official conversion through the state of Israel but in light of their current limbo status thats a small price to pay.

They prayed to the God of Israel to save them from Idi Amin Dada & in 1976 their prayers were answered in the form of Jewish Israeli soldier angels descending from the sky in Entebbe. Absolutely amazing.

The title is misleading.The Africans tribes were a remnant from Juhda.The 70AD Roman invasion forced their dispersion throughout the four corners of the earth. The European who ancestors converted to judaism 8century AD are converts to Judaism. Why are these Europeans giving the impression that they are pure jews when they are mere converts?

The Ugandan Jews are very inspiring. I'm sure it's not easy. It can even be very difficult for them to make Aliyah to Israel. Some get turned away. Israeli Ministry of the Interior has turned down or deported multiple African Jews, which the Masorti Olami and the Jewish Theological Seminary in the US have protested.

Did you know that when the Jewish problem was high, Uganda was one of the places chosen by the British to settle them? Why couldn't they go back home to Khazaria? They're not from Palestine, either.

But I will add that I can't tell whether they are aware of the fact that the conversion they had would not be accepted by all streams of Judaism. (I didn't watch the whole film). If they were not aware, then they should be apprised of that fact so they can make an informed choice.
