Salvia guarunitica 'Black & Blue' is a great plant for many gardens but does your garden have the right growing conditions? The most important thing with 'Black and Blue' Salvia is a full sun location with enough space for it to grow, because it can spread! Don't let that stop you from planting it though as it can be contained and is easily weeded. 'Black and Blue' salvia is a great plant to attract hummingbirds and other pollinators while adding cool look to the garden.
This salvia spreads via runners which makes it easy to propagate through division. In fact all you need to do is pull a piece out and stick it in a pot and it will grow a nice new root system!
Salvia guaranitica 'Black and Blue'
Zones 7 to 10
Full Sun
Drought tolerant
Spreads and needs a large area (or weeded aggressively)
'Black and Blue' salvia will propagate easily through division or cuttings.

I live in Zone 7 in Tenn also. I just set out a couple of these today and am adding more hummer plants. Will these plants survive winter or do they nee dto be brought in? Have yours spread uncontrollably?

They come back year after year. They do spread but aren't hard to control. Just pull out what you don't want.

@@nashvlbees Yes, mine have survived the winters and actually mine are coming up now. You will not believe the bees and hummingbirds that come to this plant! It is just so gorgeous! You will love it! They spread and I let them because these are in two pollinator gardens that I have. You can also transplant one or two of them when they do spread, so another plus! They are certainly an eye catcher! Enjoy! Another thing that is wonderful about this plant is that it is a cover for baby birds and baby rabbits. Also can provide shade for birds during the hot part of the day.

I just bought three in clearance at Lowe’s. I’m so glad you made this video because I’ve had experience planting simmering in my garden that completely took over. I was so tempted to just stick it in the ground. After seeing your video, I’m so glad I didn’t.

Buy this as annual in May zone 5b Midwest. Took the heat of summer before blooming prob mid June. September 20 now and still blooming. Hummers still on it and now Bumble bees and Honey Bees are having a great time. This cultivar has the black to be the top of flower stem and the petal “holder” , and the blue is the flower petals. One of my favorites for containers. the warm blue and black go great with purple Gomphrena , red coleus maybe bright red lantana, creeping Jenny and some white lobeiella to tame it down. Gonna try to propagate cuttings and overwinter, also may look at the storing the rhizomes. Not sure bout that doh

I live up in Maryland and my B&B Salvia is only blooming now (August). I guess it needed more sun, but that prevented it from getting out of control. Now I have Hummingbirds at my window all afternoon!

My hotlips salvia did this! It was supposed to be 3'×3' but it is easily 8'×6'. It ate the entire bed and the other flowers are growing sadly underneath it. I am going to try and cut it back once it warms up.

I got one today for a very good price. So beautiful. .Black stems on blue flowers and blooming in September here in Georgia! I was going around looking at things bees were ALL OVER. And plot twist: The bees were all over these. So I had to get one. IF they are happy, I am happy. So many folks get things like mums and you won't find a pollinator in sight on them. I Have the perfect spot for this where a butterfly bush I had died. It can take over that whole spot

It is a great plant for those pollinators! I would expect next year you will get a lot of enjoyment from the Black and Blue Salvia!

I have mine potted for my hummingbirds and it is getting long and stalky. I’m been searching for a while to see how to make it bushier. If I prune it back will it grow back bushier? Also looking for the same info for my guara.
@Growingthehomegarden

They should. Any time you trim the terminal growth it triggers hormones to create more branches and leaves.

When and how do you prune Black & Blue salvias in zone 7? I was planning on pruning mine back to ground level in November.
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 4 года назад
After they die back from a frost is probably the best time. Leaving the dead foliage though can offer some protection over the winter. November would be fine though.
@ninjapiratess

I am in zone 7b and I just left mine alone and let it die back on its own. I mulched up around the base and it should come back in spring! When it starts to grow back, find which stems are dead and cut those back to the base.

Definitely! That's a great way to contain it so it doesn't spread too much in your garden. I actually just potted some up the other day.

Whenever I buy an invasive plant that I want, I plant it in a canvas planter first and then plant the planter in the ground.

Disculpa, no sé nada de español, pero estoy utilizando un traductor. ¡Espero que funcione bien! Esta salvia realmente es una planta resistente y puede volver a crecer incluso después de ser desmalezada muchas veces.
