Beyond sleet and hail fall the darkened snows of the Western Highlands. A frigid frozen wasteland previously covered in rolling green hills, pushed far into Ice-aspected aether after Bahamut's Seventh Umbral Calamity. Here, the bravest still fall to its clutches, another body in the snowbanks, as a lesson to those who come after.
It's a terrible price exacted upon Ishgard's people, but you know that price has been paid back tenfold. A hundredfold. Paid by blood through her people's struggle against their own ignorance of the Holy See's machinations. Machinations now broken and shattered.
Your chocobo shakes its wings, dusting off the snow already piling on as you guide it through the treacherous paths, avoiding the natural and unnatural dangers at every turn. It's not until you reach the top of a cliff that the clouds part, allowing the rare sunlight to spill out across the highlands, a thousand thousand shining gems for those who still yet live.
It's hauntingly beautiful. You look around, spotting grave sites of many fallen Ishgardians, and the occasional large frozen body of a fallen dragon. Still, your eyes are drawn to lights here and there, torches in the cold vastness around, revealing lives lived with tenacity.
A cold drop of rain splashes across your face. In any other clime, it would feel freezing, but upon these lands it is almost warm. It's incredibly rare to see rainfall, and for an instant you fear it's merely some ice dripping from your hair. But a few seconds later, another drop scatters across your chocobo's feathers. Then another. And another.
The very sky weeps for those fallen to that pointless war. Or perhaps it cries tears of joy over humanity's ability to persevere? Black and White when all the sky is gray.
