Are you looking for a fly that works, but is simple enough to tie very small? Or are you just starting out tying flies and having trouble with some more complicated flies? Well this is the fly for you. The Black Beauty probably is the easiest fly to tie. It uses only 3 materials which are thread, wire, and dubbing. Of course besides the hook. You want a curved hook like the risen ones I used, but they dont have to be that exact hook. Whatever you have on hand that is shaped in the same way, with a curve. Almost like a little circle. They can be called scud hooks as well.
I used to tie these down to size 30, which is crazy small, when I fished the San Juan river. More commonly I fished size 26. Size 26 was probably the most common size I fished on the San Juan where the fish were very size sensitive. The midges on that river were so small there aren't hooks made that size. The trout over the years started to learn from fishing pressure that if they ate a fly that was larger than they are used to seeing, then they would get caught. So they learned not to eat the larger stuff. If you fish size 20 for instance, you will catch but you will catch the little ones, that aren't experienced. To catch fish that are 20" or larger then you really needed to fish small. There was a problem, you try to tie a pheasant tail on a size 26 hook, you are in for a world of pain. Unless you're one of the most skilled tiers in the world, it would be almost impossible to tie a good pheasant tail that small. Any fly really for that matter is near impossible unless it's super simple. Even zebra midges are difficult because they require a bead, and beads dont come small enough to not slip over the eye of the size 26 hooks. So the black beauty became one of my most commonly fished flies because it was so simple to tie, and the fish loved eating them. You could also tie these red with black heads, olive with black heads, basically any color thread with a black head works well. Give them a try and get creative.
