Eric Riches the most bothersome part is that the color breaks generally cost more mana and/or are weaker, so that is a problem.

Paralyze for 1 black is very cheap, blue ones for that cost don't tap the creature, and even the 2 mana ones have some restrictions like 3CMC or less, or only red or green creatures. Koskun Falls is one mana more than ghostly prison/propaganda. And Darkness is the exact same CMC as Fog.

@DARPA Sadly in my Commander play group the amount of ridiculous life gain would easily negate Dash Hopes. This is the only format I play as well.

Funny thing though, Paralyze was the first type of card to be enchantment tap-removal if remember correctly. Blue steals everything.

Temporal Extortion is a personal favorite of mine. Playing K'rrik. Turn one Sol Ring, turn 2 K'rrik, Necropotence, Temporal Extortion. Never seen a table scoop so fast

Little side story about uncle István: István (Stephan) is a really common name in Hungary. An Uncle Stephan is sometimes an old trinckering/grumpy guy in the neighborhood. At least that what you associate hearing the name: Pista bá (Uncle István in slang)

I use Koskun falls in my King Macar deck. It's a really nice free way to tap Macar every turn, while also being defensive

I love having Wound Reflection in my deck alongside Temporal Extortion. If your playgroup suddenly decides its always worth it to counter the Temporal Extortion, theyll always think twice about it once they see the Wound Reflection drop in and kill the person.

AsiaNPC yea my collection has gone up in value across the board, having solely played commander and sealed for the past five years. However the price spikes do make me concerned for newer players coming to the format making the barrier for entry higher.

I like Deathgrip for black counterspells. It's only good against green and they see it a mile away, but it literally puts a deathgrip on the board because they know you will counter anything you get the chance to.

One of the fun things about Temporal Extortion and Dash Hopes is that effects like Veil of Summer, Taigam, Ojutai Master, Sphinx of the Final Word, or Vexing Shusher can cause them to be unable to be countered, negating their drawbacks. Granted, none of them are in mono-black, but using Veil of Summer and Vexing Shusher (already useful cards) in a Jund deck using those two spells might be really fun.

dash hopes was one of my favourite cards in an old kitchen table deck i used to play. It used dash hopes and vexing devils with some other burn cards to try and hyper burn out the opponent

Good ol Darkness, I used that once in a game. Other guy swung all out and I Darknessed him, I think he still won in the end but it was a good laugh that now one saw coming.

@The Commander's Quarters this is an interesting series but I would say excluding anything from Planar Chaos in the future. That set had a lot of deliberate colour pie breaks as that was part of the theme of the set. In fact, a lot of the cards were literally just cards from other colours, eg Healing Leaves is a colour shifted Healing Salve.

Gate to phyrexia and words of binding are deff my favorite and gonna pick them up. I play creature heavy decks and having artifact or enchantment removal instead of creature removal is a huge plus. If you play creature heavy decks you can usually replace the creatures that your opponent is blocking, but its harder to do that with taxing attacks or anything that really disrupts your play style. as being able to tap down your opponents army of tokens or flyers to swing for allot of damage and finish off with aristocrats or just swing outright for game is a huge effect as well

Kor dirge is a better simulacrum. Tapping down creatures was an originally a black feature...both word of binding and paralyze were cards from Alpha

A more recent good example would be Mire in Misery, which let's mono black answer on board enchantments specifically.

Mitch You forgot about the Best unknown black card that broke the color black: Whitering Boon. Normally Essence Scatter it's nota use in EDH because blue hace better counter spell, but having a counter for creature in a mono black, Golgary o Rakdos deck can be awesome because no one expected to happen.

Word of Binding could be argued against because at the time it seemed many of the not as good assassins killed things that were tapped. So it was effectively putting another step in to setup a kill spell ultimately.

All these counter it by paying life cards work really well in any deck that doubles life loss with things like wound reflection or Archfiend of despair, I run a bunch in my Mono black Seizan Perverter of truth deck. The peer into the abyss card is good for the same reasons.

Kor dirge and kor chant are frenemies. Those with many of the en-kor cards work very well with Phyrexian obliterator

Words of binding and uncle Istavan were really common when I used to play kiddy magic with my friends it just seemed so cool and dark - I'm nostalgic for that sort of magic. Surprised you didn't mention Cosmic horror, clearly a red card.

I first found darkness way back in my early days of magic. In school, a buddy of mine had Mono Green Omnath and I would play Sheoldred. His favorite way to win the game was a massive gen wave to dump his entire library on the battlefield with an Akroma's memorial, then he'd attack everyone on the table to win. I was getting tired of it and someone at my lgs said "Look for this card called Darkness. You'll catch him off guard and he'll never do it again." So I found one in Italian, the only printing the store had, and went to school the next day to play. Sure enough, he taps everything, empties his mana pool, attacks the table, I slam down darkness. Everyone is like "WHAT DOES THAT DO?" because it's in Italian. After I explain it to them, the double check online to make sure I'm not lying. The Omnath player groans and without finishing the game the table just said I won for blowing him out like that

It and Mire in Misery are the two recent examples of them decide to add limited Enchantment removal to Black. They did this intentionally to spread out Artifact and Enchantment removal more evenly.

Word of Command. You essentially take control of a player and cast one of their spells. Yes it’s expensive because it wasn’t printed past unlimited but the collector’s edition is 4 times cheaper than unlimited.

Are exile effects part of Black's color pie? I feel like running exiling removal in mono-Black decks can be a game-changer against some huge threats that black can struggle to deal with.

i miss Withering Boon, it's a black creature counter with an activated ability to pay 3 life to counter a creature. i mean you can cast it and don't pay... or counter more then one creature its just weird :D

If you cast temporal extortion and someone pays half their life, and you have either Wound Reflection or Archfiend of Despair out on your end step, that person just dies

So, does Angel of Jubilation shut off the option to pay for Dash Hopes and Temporal Distortion. It reads: Flying Other nonblack creatures you control get +1/+1. Players can't pay life or sacrifice creatures to cast spells or activate abilities. I love trying to make Orzav counter control decks to test on MTGO. Kind of an interactive pillow-fort. Throwing in the white/black counters to keep people guessing.

The life payment of those cards isn't to cast spells or activate abilities. Dash Hopes and Temporal Extortion have a triggered ability that lets the opponent pay life.

I think you forgot death grip. It’s a two mana black enchantment that has the following text. Pay double black: counter target green spell

@@jonathantillian6528 Nope. That is the old mindset that allowed things like Red Elemental Blast. The current way they do color hosers is having those colors do the thing they are allowed to do. Black kills Green/White creatures, Blue counters Red/Green spells etc.

Withering Boon is another Color Pie break for black. Its an even worse break than dash hopes, as its actually a true "hard" counter and cannot be stopped by paying life.

There's also "Guardian Beast," from Arabian Nights which gives noncreature artifacts indestructible ... and they can't be enchanted. scryfall.com/card/me4/85/guardian-beast
