This episode sees Mike and David sample this swish, premium priced streaming DAC from a highly respected brand. It's beautifully made, sounds great and is a breeze to use - what's not to like? The guys reckon that Auralic has come a very long way from the original 2014 Vega, which was decent but basic USB DAC...
Each episode of Hi-Fi Riff features Mike and David's unedited, unexpurgated views about all manner of weird and wonderful hi-fi designs. Auralic forever! They used a CD jacket of J.S Bach I did in their advertising of the AURALiC ALTAIR G1. A company with great taste! 😇

Auralic make great stuff. I have an Aries G2 coupled to a Denafrips Terminator Plus Dac and it is a sublime combination. The only thing that slightly irks is that Auralic does not fit an I2S output via hdmi, sticking to their proprietary connector which can only be used with Auralic Dacs.

Great Riff as ever. I use a Chord TT2 and MScaler, with a Quad Artera Analogue Pre amp for my Rega P8...any thoughts on using the TT2 as a Pre amp? If so, how might I use the P8 - as the TT2 is digital only? A future Riff?

Another great review. Well i now wonder using the internal dac of the Vega, pair this to the music fidelity m8xi you reviewed recently and again another great review, i can imagine how it may then sound.

Thanks for this review, but Dave's attempt at conveying something useful about the app and the streaming software was sabotaged by the bombastic Mike/Roon duo. For people who don't use push apps like Roon or similar the functionality of the software can make or break a streamer.. What services does it integrate? Are the integrations any decent? Does it support the relative Connect type apps? What about its network playback functionality when one does not use Roon or similar? Which platforms does the controlling app work on? I guess you catch my drift.

Actually, the main reason I didn't use the app is because it does not work on Android. 😢 Mike

I've just purchased the Naim nss333, which sounds fantastic .. Atoms a great all in one for the money, but it's a few years old now

Naim have kindly alerted me to the imminent arrival of the Uniti Nova PE, which is a sort of Atom, but with a 150W/channel Class D power amplifier stage. And for this they want £8600! I'd call it the Unity Nova TMFM! I haven't checked the sums, but I reckon it must be possible to procure - legally and decently - an Atom HE and a new-style NAP250 for less money.

I'd like to see your take on the Eversolo A8 it does everything this does plus much more for 1/3 the price. Add the A8 has a R2R pre amp set up the G2.2 seems way overpriced.

I think Auralic vs Eversolo comparison is a must. Both ChiFi. Both highly reviewed and recommended.

The DS Lightning app sounds better than Roon. The sonic difference is how Roon processes streaming data vs. proprietary software. Roon has to take whatever the network is feeding and process it in realtime to the DAC. Where as the likes of Auralic and Aurender caches the file to make sure that the processor has the time to fully process the music to the original quality. I always thought the lack of quality in streaming was due to all the noise introduced, but am now convinced that it’s the way the files are processed.

I own the vega g2.2: the pre amplifier part is mediocre compared to my luxman 590x2 and at the same level as my JBL SDR35 AVR and Moon 390 dac/streamer/pre and Moon 740P pre amplifier Which I owned both as well.

Fine job gentlemen, however...................................... Shall I stream "Nirvana's Unplugged" from Mtv without seeing the video? Or how about streaming the "Boston 'Pops' Orchestra" playing "Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture" on the 4th of July without the fireworks? Why would I attend a concert with my eyes shut? No. There is a myriad of choices with streamers that handle video. Don't choose 1/2 a streamer. Choose a streamer with HDMI VIDEO OUTPUT. Acid Jazz, Funk & Brass 🔈🔉🔊
