The allure of NAD (En-A-Dee) always was that it cost half of a top-of-the-line Sony or Denon, Marantz, etc. and it gave them a run for their money, and made you wonder how the heck did they pull it off. People with money always went for the lux Japanese stuff that looked like exquisite furniture.
Great to see my tuner amp loved up by you guys. I cherish mine which in use every day as its for all my sonic duties. I had it serviced several years ago by Phil from Nytech Audio. Its fed from a Linn Majik DSI streamer amp (Its so much nicer imo to the onboard Linn Chakra amps) Keep up the good work !
Regarding this Al Jarreau's CD.... I do not have original one, but is there some differences between first three songs and the other ones in slightly different sound - sound quality? After 3rd song sound is a bit more mature, coherent and fuller. Any similar impressions or feedback please?
Stock they are OK, with the Zilch crossover they are Fing fantastic! I have a stick pair I bought in 93 and Zilched they are perfect for little monitors and my portable theater setup.
Oh boy, this David Sylvian album is crazy good on every level, with Holger Czukay from CAN making these bakground noise, short waves radio samples, etc, etc. I can't help but play this record for those who don't know David Sylvian universe. The more time fly the better it seems to get. I'd love to try this phono stage for sure. Great review guys!
Everybody knows that the Wharfedale Diamond is the best "mini monitor". Rather like Mike's green light Naim Nait, I have the MK1 Diamonds which are sonically superior to all other Diamonds, including, shock, horror, David's decidedly inferior MK2 Diamonds....
As always love the riff and I wish I could have a pint down the hi-fi pub with you both, may I ask where is the riff featuring that little know hi-fi company Chord Electronics who apparently make DAC'S called DAVE that come with tiny noises little mains transformers 😂🤣😂😂
You gentlemen are brilliant👍 it’s so much fun to watch your videos 🙂 extra fun for me was the mention of the Volvo, my favorite car brand that happens to be from my homeland 🇸🇪 (although I drive a SAAB 95 these days✨)
Here I was in Corfu at 3am, suffering with a specially imported UK flu virus courtesy of visiting relatives and dosed up to the eyeballs. I couldn't sleep, I'd become slightly constipated due to the flu cure blocking all bodily functions and the night loomed long and mournful before me. Then, I spotted the latest Hi-Fi Riff video lurking at the top of the RU-vid subscription page. "Why not?", I thought. "I can't feel any worse".......21 minutes later and the World is spinning beautifully again. You two and your little, smiley boy have done the trick. The Smiths, Scritti and Microdisney all get a mention - I've got them all on vinyl with an extended Miles Davis solo on Scritti's "Oh Patti" single. I can safely say that all my problems are behind me now. Thanks, Guys.
Slightly later but I’ll give a shout out to B&O C75, CX100. I have a pair of the latter, wall mounted with the Cona sub. They have limits but are good. Sealed with a ported sub. Proper sealed, not ABR -that’s ported really. Used in my home studio either side of a computer monitor, listened to in nearfield
I thought that when they were held horizontally. Cast my mind back to the B&W LM1 "leisure monitors", although the Sansuis are nothing like them in shape or proportions.

@@MrVinylistaYoung Naval Officer straight out of training makes a hash of it on the flight deck of a Type 23 Frigate . Petty Officer tells him you're not on Daddy's yacht now ! 2nd Lieutenant says . No Daddy's yacht's bigger than this
Didn't you guys miss having an exposed tweeter to stroke? 😊 A bit unfortunate that they pose a difficult load.Solid little speakers though with reasonable WAF as they say in the industry. Thanks all.
Always nice to get a notification on YT from you guys! Regarding The Smiths, I have always liked them but the recording production of their albums has always been terrible.
I was at the HiFi show at the penta hotel by Heathrow airport the year that the j11 was released. Sansui had than placed on top of a pair of large floor standing speakers. Trying to fool the punters about how much bass there was.
Dave, been years since I’ve had the album in my hands but what is the picture on the front of the Scritti Politi album. Fingers and a plastic bag? I think I struggled to identify it back in the day!
Yes, the clues are in the other sleeve photos. I would've mentioned it earlier but I felt so ill ( see previous comment) I promise to do better next time
They pair great with Dynaudio, special 40, contour20i, and up the confidence line. I am running my IA-4 with PMC twenty5 22i speakers, made in the UK as well. Amazing pairing.
Only £20,000 ??? What a f*ck you think you selling, kidney? We have 2 much greedy people on planet who overprice their products! Even more so those who have excess money and have nowhere and nothing on to spend it! On the other hand people live on one £ per day if they are lucky ... In my youth, I worked for a company that installed Dolby equipment in movie theaters and professionally serviced electronics, computers, etc. There was a time when I wanted to buy an extremely expensive pair of studio speakers, but even then I felt that there is no such perfect speaker on the planet that is worth the money no matter what he does with them, maybe for 10% of the selling price at best. Yes... I know what I'm writing, I'm very familiar with the limit of each embedded part as an electrician and what makes the difference. my point is the following, about 30 years ago I bought quality drivers, made the calculations for boxes myself, made output amplifiers, transformers... the smile and satisfaction is always huge when I see and hear the product of my labor, in 30 years absolutely no repair! Now at 52 years, 30+ when mine were made... I'd love to compare them to these £20,000 ones but I'd never begrudge my babies ever The fact that you still listen to records apart from a digital source with superior dynamics, signal quality, noise, etc. etc. tells you that you have paid so much money in vain because you are not using the advantages of modern technology, or to be more precise... if you have an FM source radio, it makes no difference whether you listen to music on £200 or £20,000 sound boxes and that fact, only in STUDIIO envirement, period
I have this amp. I’ve owned Kenwood>Sony>Krell>Hegel>Schiit Aegir>SPL>Musical FidelityA1. The Sugden A21SE is my all time fave of what I’ve owned. It is a wonderfully euphoric sounding amp.
You should try get your hands on a Orchard Audio PecanPi+ Streamer (or anything by Orchard Audio actually). Their stuff blows pretty much everything out of the water when it comes to streaming, and your wallet will not moan.
Great Video, your description of Revela 1 as 'Delicate' is reminiscent of Mission 770s sound considering they both were designed by Peter Comeau. How do both models differ? Thank you and looking fwd to more riffs! 😊
Now it’s over a year since the review how would you compare this against the similar priced Rega Elicit mk 5 and the much cheaper Elex mk 4 both of which seem to offer similar features? To be honest I am fancying the Elex at £1200 but if you think the Audiolab or Elicit are superior I would consider them as well. I intend to partner with Audiolab 9000CDT and Wharfdale Evo 4.4 speakers. I ask because I am housebound and rely on expert advice as it is virtually impossible for me to visit a hifi dealer.
For what it’s worth I auditioned these against the Ls50’s and Lumina 2’s. Went for these as I found them the most neutral and listenable for longer periods. Lumina were lovely but slightly bright treble to my ears. Didn’t like the Ls50’s, detailed but found them lacking in excitement. These were tested with both a Roksan K3 and Exposure 3510.
Got a pair of these powered by an Exposure 3510. Lovely combo to my ears. Surprising bass for their size. Went for these as i have a medium sized room and needed flexibility in positioning. These are very flexible but experimentaion is key. Small toe in change can impact the sound a lot.
I want a set of kerr acoustics speakers! Those new bookshelves look really interesting. Curious to know more about them, costs, ECT. The sugden would be killer in my rig. I built a pair of aperiodic transmission line cabs (quite large) for a eight inch full range driver. It's a paper cone under hung voice coil and huge 10lb alnico magnets. It's got some beautiful detail and plays wonderfully with a solid state amp with a tube preamplifier. They are 94db efficient. I bet that sugden would slay with this set up. When i fire it up all these thoughts go away. Still that sugden in anodized blue would melt me.
Excellent! An affordable alternative may be the 6000N play by Audiolab, that has a similar no-nonsense front but with 6 presets. Now with the introduction of both the 7000 and 9000 range, retailers are cleaning up their inventory as it were, so the 6000N now often retails for ridiculous discount prices. It hasa high quality circuitry, its own solid transformer and an excellent sabre 9018-dac for the money. It is truly excellent with many review awards. Its only downside is the Play Fi app, but the 6 presets do ease the pain somewhat…atb, Gerlach Sven
