I love how the music feels like a human mind collapsing and reconstructing itself. Like at the beginning it seems normal, but a bit shaky with the vocals and the smooth and comforting jazz. Then the saxes seem to become distorted until fully collapsing along with the vocals. Then afterwards things seem to come back to normal, but the sunglasses hide the shell of a human wearing them, who seems to be fully confident, but in reality is barely able to move forward. At least that's my tale on the song.

INTRODUCTION Black Country, New Road (henceforth abbreviated as ‘BCNR’) is an English band whose song Sunglasses was released in 2019. The music video for Sunglasses features a slideshow of stills from amateur GoPro footage originally posted on the online video platform RU-vid (Wayne). The stills show moments from sports events, concerts, parties, family and, leisure activities (see fig. 2-6). The recording of these moments is enabled by the GoPro camera’s characteristics: small, sturdy, affordable, and attachable to a wide variety of objects such as selfie-sticks, instruments helmets, vehicles, etc. Every image is framed in a black-and-white frame, which gives the images a uniform character-also, the images in the video alternate at a fast pace at an interspersed speed. The uniform characteristic in combination with the multiplicity of content is where tension arises: even though the content of the pictures includes a diversity of supposedly exciting moments, Sunglasses’ manner of presenting the images renders them homogenous and interchangeable. Given that the phenomenon of sharing mundane activities on social media is a characteristic of today’s digital era, the music video for Sunglasses poses a cultural critique of technology’s increasing invasiveness. Accordingly, the research question of this thesis is, ‘what are the effects of the GoPro camera on the user’s experience, as represented by BCNR’s music video for Sunglasses?’. In order to answer that question, this thesis will investigate the GoPro company’s dominant discourse in the light of Guy Debord’s Society of the Spectacle. Debord describes a society where images have become the prime medium of interactions and economy, with alienating results to the individuals. This economy of images has grown into an autonomous reality where relations between people have become relations between images (Debord, pars. 2; 4). A similar phenomenon is arguably happening in today’s digital capitalism with the GoPro acting as the eye - and social media as the architecture of the Spectacle. The manifestation of the society of the Spectacle in the present is not the focus of this thesis. That theme has already been covered to a great extent in the work of Emilie Nunn and, most admirably, in Kane X. Faucher’s Social Capital Online. Instead, the focus of this thesis is to analyse the Spectacle’s effects on individuality and experience. For this analysis, the focus will be laid solely on the music video, and not on the lyrics or music, since that would be out of the thesis’s scope. The thesis states that Sunglasses, in the context of Debord’s Society of the Spectacle, makes apparent the degrading consequences of the commodification of experience in the age of digital capitalism and highlights the individual’s dependence on social peers for social affirmation. This statement is brought forward in a counter-discourse via the Debordian strategy of ‘détournement’: ‘a radical juxtaposition of various elements alienated from their original context for the purpose of critique’ (Trier 70). The first thesis chapter engages in a discourse analysis of Society of the Spectacle and argues that the Spectacle’s dominant discourse transforms the individual into a pseudo-individual. The second chapter takes a socio-technical perspective in its analysis of the GoPro company’s dominant discourse in how they envision their camera to be used in combination with social media. It investigates how social media exercises social power through its architecture of participation, culminating in the commodification of experience. The third chapter analyses how Sunglasses acts as a counter-discourse to the previously established dominant discourse via the critical artistic strategy of détournement. The analysis will pay close attention to the aspect of contingency during the intricate play of forms of representation (film, photography, and stills) with the aid of Marie-Ann Doane’s The Emergence of Cinematic Time and deploy the structuralist method of ‘deconstruction’ to determine the meaning of the artistic strategy.
