Black Dart is the U.S.' Answer to Drones

The US military has been experimenting with the use of drones for almost a century, but it’s only recently that technological advances have made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) a game changer in warfare. Today, at least 79 countries field drones; 23 of those countries arm them.
Earlier this year, VICE News was one of the first media outlets ever granted access to the US military's annual Black Dart exercise, a decade-old joint exercise that focuses on detecting, countering, and defeating UAVs.
As we watched tens of millions of dollars worth of military equipment go up against $1,000 drones, Black Dart demonstrated the way rapidly evolving drone technology is challenging the military's most basic assumptions about controlling the air. (One civilian drone maker we visited told us that the technology he has at his fingertips is outpacing some R&D efforts at big aerospace contractors.) And so Black Dart continues to encourage innovation in the effort to keep the US military one step ahead in the cat-and-mouse game between drones and drone killers.

They didn't even mention that you can get a consumer drone with GPS and a 4K camera for like $300 now. It's really crazy. You can plan flight paths and the drone will do the flying for you whenever - great for night flights!

There's a saying that the military readiness is 40 years ahead of civilian technology. So riddle me this; why the fuck are the cameras such shit?
@flamefang
@flamefang 9 лет назад
+Joseph Stassup Because the data from those cameras needs to be transferred via satellite as quickly as possible, usually from extremely remote locations, half way across the world. This means that compressed files are ideal, and so while the military could theoretically pursue better camera technology, it's severely limited by information technology. It's also very probable that they simply don't need better cameras.
@SCIFIguy64
@SCIFIguy64 9 лет назад
Flamefang Could just have a balloon with some comms systems attatched and use it as a flying telephone pole.
@flamefang
@flamefang 9 лет назад
+Joseph Stassup Maybe, but last I checked none of us are military engineers. Also, that still requires a lot of cable laying to cover the many tends of hundreds of miles that Afghanistan consists of, and doesn't account for future situations where the drones might need to operate over land we don't control.

I think we're going to see very large drones carrying smaller drones. Especially once we have the swarm technology perfected that we're working on now with DARPA. The carriers will still be needed for the large fighter type aircraft though. Drone technology along with some others is eventually going to make carriers an easy target. Its always been able to fight off most attacks using its planes and anti air weapons but when thousands of swarming missiles attack its going to get sunk. This tech is getting here fast.

"Largest and most advanced military" First of all USA is not the largest military (hint hint china is) and even still china is not the largest military compared to total, or reserve, but no where is USA the largest, except on its military budget, spending a shit load of money on the same shit that other country's have... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_military_and_paramilitary_personnel (click the arrows at the first row to see the lowest/largest number of active/reserve/etc) ALSO check the bottom of the Wikipedia page for the sources and dont bitch how "Wikipedia is untrustworthy!!!" because you can easily look up what Wikipedia sources say or look it up yourself ANYWAYS on the "advanced part" is up for debate because that you cant really determine who has the best military because there is no type of calculation or statistics. and agian yes USA spends 4x the military budget then the second most spending country (Russia) but it dosnt mean its automatically the best... Mikhail Kalashnikov had basic school education yet invented the best weapon in the world and was a general and arms designer. Yet many people spend millions in their education and cant invent shit for their country's military. Otherwise great video!

What happens when 100 drones carrying 1kg of C4 each fly directly at your $35,000,000 helicopter from every direction? The next step is swarms of kamikaze drones to go after high price targets. One side is happy to trade $120,000 worth of drones to take down a $35,000,000 jet or a helicopter.

The real question is what will happen if drones start using laser technology and stealth? They're expecting them to be airborne, but if a fleet of drones hides in a forest with camouflage, and then shoots lazers at nearby enemies without being seen... or *if a drone that sends out jamming waves is used near headquarters, the battle could end right there* ._.) The crazy thing is that they could also be disguised as kids toys with c4 and tnt on them. This doesn't include "hijack drones" which broadcast a signal and steal data of the location drones are transmitting to, or stealth drones that make clouds to hide their presence. If drones that use toriodel fields are used, then they could go undetected and scout out information. Imagine if there was a shield drone flying alongside bomber airplanes incase it got attacked, or if drones shot drones 0_o
@robert5
@robert5 5 лет назад
any one who is serous about security already has capability to jam every RF frequency possible to use with drones. When a drone's control systems are jammed they will usually just stop and hover or just fall out of the sky. It takes really serious technology to build a drone that once launched can home in on the target with pinpoint accuracy with ZERO control input by an operator. Not saying that tech does not exist, it just takes really serious high level players to use it. It is super easy to jam the common control frequencies and GPS frequencies and after that, 99% of the drones out there can no longer be directed to fly to any certain point with pinpoint accuracy.

UAV are nice and all, but they can never be used for a full on air to air combat. Unlike traditional fighter jets that have a pilot that does all the controlling, UAV are controlled from a ground station, which means there is a delay in the signal given off by the station. When the ground station send a signal it has to travel to satellite and then transmitted to the UAV, and all this takes about 2 seconds. Those 2 seconds might not seem much but in a combat it makes a huge difference.

Lasers would, in my opinion, be the best suited weapon against drones. Among the others they mentioned in the video. They might be already using them, they just haven't revealed it yet.
@SeanQuinn
@SeanQuinn 10 лет назад
Absolutely right Dani. I read that the lasers we have now can target and track many threats at once. We successfully shot down a missile with it. It just needs a bit more power so it can down shit on contact. It took like 24 seconds to explode the missile. Although a drone isn't made of the same alloys as a missile. It would go down instantly i think.
@dieselstruck
@dieselstruck 10 лет назад
Sean Quinn Yeah, that's what I was thinking. These drones are quite fragile. A laser seems like the best choice. It can track the target and it's not a one shot deal. It seems perfect for their small size. Depending from what platform they fire it from it may not even need to be very powerful. The electronics and structure might be easly compromised with moderate power. I bet to the military is not very challenging to track even a fly on the sky. Maybe we'll see it on the future. Very interesting indeed.

These cheap drones are just radio controlled right? So 'hijacking' the radio signal should be pretty easy no?
@totallyunmotivated
@totallyunmotivated 10 лет назад
Modern drones, the ones the US have anyway, have more sophisticated means of control and communication. Encrypted Satellite uplinks or something. More along the lines of a fighter jet than an RC helicopter. But yes, the civilian produced vehicles are probably controlled over radio or 3g, so the military can easily jam it. They had man portable devices in Iraq that would block certain remote detonators for IEDs. These would jam commercial drones as well. A friend of mine who served in the Army said that insurgents would pay kids to drive RC cars near the troops to determine the radius of the jamming equipment.
@Thumbsupurbum
@Thumbsupurbum 10 лет назад
totallyunmotivated I'm just wondering why they showed the U.S. military training with Apache's taking down these radio-controlled drones. It would seem more logical to say make a counter-drone with a radio-jammer of some sort on it?
@totallyunmotivated
@totallyunmotivated 10 лет назад
Flintstoned Well drones can range in size and sophistication. Taking out something like an RQ-170 with an air-to-air missile is completely appropriate. If the enemy were to field hundreds of smaller, less expensive drones, you would want to take another approach and exploit the fact that such drones probably don't have the same defenses against jamming and hacking. They probably want to know just how small a drone can get before it is invulnerable to conventional air-to-air weapons.
@ltrodd
@ltrodd 10 лет назад
Modern military radio systems can actually rapidly jump between many different frequencies in an unpredictable way, which makes them very hard to jam because you have to jam all frequencies.

Okay let's talk advanced tech. 9:42 that rotating thing is radar.. I expect everyone knows that. But it's not curved, it's just a big flat panel. That is a phased array, or holographic antenna, made of hundreds to thousands to millions of small antennas. It requires very fast parallel computation such as with 3D GPU chips to combine and correlate the signals from each tiny antenna. A phased array is capable of precisely pinpointing multiple incoming signals. And just as it can receive, it can also transmit a focused high energy beam (aka a death ray), and potentially at multiple targets at once... such as a drone swarm. The small planes at that test site, are possibly just target practice for the phased array...

@TeaRex
@TeaRex 7 лет назад
Apaches are powered by turbo-shaft engines which are different from a conventional jet engine, jet engines produce thrust while turboprops produce shaft power for things like turning a prop/blades. Also I don't think drone minefields would be very effective against Jet powered aircraft as they normally fly at high altitudes. Next up, traditional land mines are hidden from sight and if they were visible there effectiveness would be compromised so i think flying minefields would be hard to pull off.
@theDgrader
@theDgrader 7 лет назад
Tea Rex so my argument for the Apache being a jet is still legit and A10's fly very low therefore vulnerable to drones, just like planes a vulnerable to birds etc except birds don't explode....
