Good Lord. A workmate as a show piece

Right? Workmates are meant to be used... but a little character makes restoration quite satisfying.

Thanks for the reply. I have a beat up Workmate that I had cleaned up and repainted the black base. I never tried to restore it but then I found an H frame Type 2 in very good condition since it was Circa 1975 with only a very little rust and small speckle paint splatter. Not much work needed for the aluminum H Frame to brighten it up. Steel wool and a little soapy water. So this is a keeper! I will put the larger Black (all steel) Workmate up or sale and keep this recent find. Yeah Market Place!

So cool! We’re using all 4 restored workmates… so worth the effort! We actually found 2 more workmates that need some TLC… but we’re waiting until the winter, because it is soooooo hot in Arizona right now.

This man deserves much more than he is getting at the moment . But he will go a along way with the hard work he puts

Workmate is a great tool; they moved away from cast aluminum architecture for the base design early on because it has a propensity to fail rapidly if overstressed and gives no warning. The steel tubing and channel actually deforms quite severely before total failure so it's much like a parachute that doesn't fully deploy and lets you down for a hard landing, but you're still alive to talk about it.

Bought one of those in 1978. It’s seen me through two remodels, one new build and numerous diy projects. Great workshop accessory.

No doubt… perhaps pound-for-pound one of the best tools. The 4 that we refurbished are in full operation… taking a beating, but they continue to deliver. Wicked satisfying restoration project.

It would be more helpful to have a little dialogue explaining things? Need to know about the paints selected. The device you use to cook/clean plastic and rubber items?

Hi Larry - thx for the advise, will do... we'll add more dialogue explaining things in our videos. For Spray Paint, we use Rust-Oleum products; different colors: amzn.to/45vcF4e For cleaning tools & parts, we use the Multitool Digital Ultrasonic Cleaner: amzn.to/4g0RnR8 Are you restoring Workmates too? Hi Winston Paul, is it stuck? I’m thinking grease it. On my B/Ds I used white lithium grease.

Thx Elias. All 4 units are back in use. The boards are actually holding-up really well. If/when we need to repair them again, we’ll look to changing the boards.

Im sure would be cheaper to purchase new unless its for nostalgic purposes
@suburbandiy
@suburbandiy 11 месяцев назад
Hi Rob... from an economic view, perhaps it would be less expensive to purchase new. Consider however, the only cost to restore these 4 workmates were new plastic handles. Everything else we had onsite. More importantly, this channel is about a journey... from suburban culture, like always buying new, to DIY everything... we push ourselves to learn new skills... now we fix, repair, restore, and repurpose everything we can. We have lots of videos on multiple topics. Join us on our journey to enlightenment and subscribe!

What were the bolts cleaned with?
@suburbandiy
@suburbandiy 11 месяцев назад
Hi James, I think you're asking about the rust remover... it's a gel form from a spray bottle. We use various techniques to clean the bolts, depending on their condition. If crusty rust, we'll use a wire brush and wire wheel. We then soak them in a rust remover... we use a gel form from a spray bottle. We also clean them in the ultrasonic cleaner with water and dish soap and wipe them down with acetone. We don't always get this anal on projects, but these workmates were left out in the elements for a really long time. North Phoenix Suburbansted.

I think what James was asking, as I am now, what is the name of that spray gel that you used at ~9:53 ?? I don't see anything like that for sale around here.
@suburbandiy

Thx for the clarification James Cooper. We used ‘Rust-Oleum 300112 Rust Dissolver Gel, 32 oz’, purchased via Amazon: a.co/d/1jyg4SY

What is the machine,an ultraaonic rust remover ? Have you tried electrolysis ? Thanks.
@suburbandiy
@suburbandiy 8 месяцев назад
Hi Rainman270, it’s an ultrasonic cleaner. It does not remove rust. Depending on the size of the rusty piece, I use either a gel-based rust remover, Evapo-rust, and/or a wire wheel. We also recently have been experimenting with a rust converter, and really excited about the results. Have you tired a rust converter? I’ve watched a fair amount of videos where they use electrolysis, but have not yet tried it. We’ve got a fair amount of projects lined up, where electrolysis might the best path… stand by for future videos!

@@suburbandiy Thanks, so if it doesn't remove rust, what does it remove ?
@suburbandiy
@suburbandiy 8 месяцев назад
The ultrasonic removes dirt, grime, and slime. If the piece is rusty, I remove the rust after the ultrasonic. In summary, I clean the piece first, then remove the rust.
