Leaky Vintage Floor Jack Restoration (Hein Werner)

My dad has had this car jack for years. He bought it used and apparently the previous owner made some interesting modifications to it... They used to use these things to re-bend vehicle frames back into shape after an accident which put a lot of stress on them. Anyway it was leaking pretty bad and wouldn't lift up a car anymore so I decided I'd rebuild it for him and make a restoration video out of it.
I started this restoration project a few years ago, but after I tore it apart I realized I'd need a lathe to actually fix it up properly. It sat in a storage bin for years in pieces until I got a lathe and enough courage to try and put it all back together. Sorry the video ended up being a feature length film... I couldn't really cut it down much more and I don't like multi-part series.

I rebuilt these beasts for 25 years and am glad to say you've done a 98% excellent job. My nitpicks are - You put 29 ball bearings in the caster races, should have been only 28 (they need a little room to roll around easy). From the factory all the pivot points, wheels and saddle stem came fully greased. At '25:10' the rubber plug for the check valve is installed upside down, if it's not leaking now, it soon will be... And finally - The saddle should have been painted white.

What I would love to have as I'm watching this is subtitles explaining the different parts as they are being worked on and what is being done. Especially in the beginning disassembly phase I felt as those I was getting whipped around from one piece to another without the context of where that piece was within the larger structure or what the purpose used to be. Even so, I really appreciate the effort that has gone into this video. :)

Absolutely beautiful Restoration on that wonderful Hein Werner Floor jack. In my belief arguable Hein Werner along with Walker the best quality hydraulic jacks ever made (Then, when made in the USA) Chinese Jacks ? Junk, IMO.. But be sure not to forget to double up on the jack stands for non USA floor jacks, they will slow leak at times, which anyone who cares not to die under a vehicle should use without fail, USA or off shore purchased and used ! These Hein Warners were some great jacks. Notice how the hydraulic unit is housed in its own cubby to keep it from coming in contact with debris or the floor directly. Most new jacks just have that all exposed so that it can die in a couple of years.

Beautiful work, really. Kept thinking this was a remake of the 70's TV show, "The Six Million Dollar Man" "We can rebuild it... We can make the world's first six million dollar floor jack!"

That was a great restoration of that old jack. I am not certain, but I think a shop I worked at had a hydraulic jack just like that or at least similar to it. Now it has a brand new life ahead of it. I love your videos. No talking or annoying music, just getting straight down to business. Keep up the great work!! 🙂
