Black Diamond Distance 15 // One of the Best Mountain Bags

Extra Mediocre

If you could sum up the Distance 15 in one word it would be versatile. It's a good running bag, a great hiking bag and a solid choice when you're not sure which kind of bag you'll need. It holds as much as a magicians hat, can withstand brutal bushwacks, and resists light precipitation. ‪@BlackDiamondEquipmentLtd‬

Video ideas. 1) Cast of characters - one ten minutes video on each of you how you got to be mediocre - sports growing up, challenges to learn a multidiscipline pass time, how you balance play and worklife; what you do for work if not too personal? 2. Seems like the gear closet is a library of stuff you co-own and all share together? Is that right? How did you come up with the idea for doing that, what are ‘rules’ and best practices if we want to try something similar? Thanks!

I’ve had the 15 for over a year now?? Best bag ever! I do run with it and it has minimal bounce loaded up with a 7lb base weight for thru hiking. I throw a 20L dry sack in it so I can over stuff it. I can fit my entire summer thru hike kit in this thing and then I couple it with a lumbar pack if I need additional capacity like for 5 days of food. The pack will set lightly on top of the lumbar pack as if the two were designed to go together. I absolutely LOVE this set up💗💗💗

Great idea on the dry sack. I will try that out.

Which lumbar pack do you use?
@tcgregory7693
@tcgregory7693 3 года назад
@@GidoRoelofsen Originally I was trying to find the lightest weight lumbar pack like something out of dynema and also something that had over a 5 L capacity. REI makes one that is pretty nice (Trail 5) and fairly lightweight. I ended up liking the Osprey Seral 7 the best. The Osprey is way over built and much heavier than what I would’ve ideally wanted but the fit is so much better than anything else out there especially if it’s loaded down. It has the least amount of bounce to it and it doesn’t start to loosen up or slide down my butt. Both the REI lumber pack and the Osprey are deep enough that they create a nice supportive shelf for the black diamond running pack to rest on.

I agree. I don't like "flop" or strings that snag on branches and such.

Crampons, harnesses, ropes, climbing gear, jacket, gloves, shell... lucky you! I'm not able to fit in my winter stuff for a ski-touring day. Basically the helmet is too big and I'm not able/don't like to fix it outside

Personally, I needed to size down for a good fit. Normally a Medium in most shirts, but found I had a little jiggle in the medium. So if you are on the small end of medium, maybe try a small, or try both if you can. I used this bag for Tor Des Geants in Italy, and it was great. I was probably at the limit on stuff I could carry, but it fit my pants, fleece, puffy, shell, and some odds and ends pretty well. Also, if need be you can slip stuff not in the main compartment but held down by the top closure, for a little extra carrying capacity. I see some shots of people carrying ropes this way. I would stash my rain pants there during the race sometimes.

Great video regarding gear. Always interested to learn form Mediocre amateurs what works well and what sucks in the mountains. More please.

Do you think the pole sleeves would work for non BD branded or non-collapsible poles?

I love these bags but the Distance 8 seem like enough space for a long day out (not multi days). Could I ask what criteria you would use to choose between the 8 and 15 bags?

Thanks for the review! Seems like the BD pack bounces a bit more and has less pockets than the Salomon Adv Skin 12. Would you prefer the BD for more technical terrain, and the Salomon otherwise?
@jacksonhall5725
@jacksonhall5725 3 года назад
I haven't personally owned the Adv Skin but I've seen it in shops and such. I've put a year of decent use on the Distance 15. I'd go with the Distance for anything more technical than regular Trail-Running. The fabric is extremely durable and the axe carry is better than the Salomon. For less technical use I'd go with the Salomon. That said, I only had the budget for one, so I took the versatility of the BD.

Check out the brand new Black Diamond Cirque 22. A backcountry specific ski pack, includes diagonal ski carry, ice axe, crampon/skins pouch. I just got one in L.

I've been using it for ski touring a couple of times. Works great when you wanna go a little lighter! Only struggle was my probe that doesn't quite fit inside. Could not decide wether to put it inside and having it stick out of the main pocket or trying to cinch it snug to the side. The Cirque 22 seems to be in a heck of a sweet spot!
@PerfDayToday
@PerfDayToday 3 года назад
@@karlolofsson7291 agree on size. I now use it mostly for lift-served skiing. For backcountry, I just bought a 40 liter Hyperlite Mt Gear 2400 Porter w exterior back pocket, given the need to carry more gear.
