The Black Diamond Distance 8 (gen 2) hydration vest is great for those long trail days and has a ton of features! This well made pack is built with custom developed UHMWPE ripstop body fabrics, unique trekking pole storage, stitch-less Edge Taping Technology, multipole stash pockets, and a harness system that moves with you. While there are two things that I would change to make this pack even better, it really is a phenomenal pack and one that I describe as the Mary Poppins bag for ULTRA trail runners. Thanks for watching the video!

Thank you for an indepth review that feels honest but not elitist or nitpicky. "My mother in law bought it for Xmas". Love it!

I have the Gen 1 Distance 15 that I use for bigger mountain adventures that I can always fit my camera gear, and the extra gear that you need for high alpine pursuits! I also love the isolated trekking pole sleeves to keep them out of the way when scrambling and low class 5 climbing! It's also a great follow pack when roped multi-pitch climbing as it stays fit to your body!

This is great feedback! It's quite the versatile pack.

Great review Chad. I'm due for a new pack this year (currently using Ultimate Direction packs), this might be one to consider. More accessible pockets on the front would be better (as you mentioned, only has zipper on one side). Good job!

The distance 15 is my go-to for most trips. Really liked both the gen1 and gen2. Both have advantages over the other imo.

Hell yeah. Finally the review I’ve been looking for. Thanks! Question: what size did you get and your height/weight?

Thank you so much! I didn't find too many (or any) review videos of the gen 2 pack so I'm glad I was able to get this out there for others. I'm about 155 lb, 5'8, 38 inch chest and went with size medium. Seems to fit me perfectly!

@@SeeChadRunyeah it seems like all of the reviews are of the older one. Even the recent reviews on here are of the older one. Thanks again!

Thanks for the video. I have a few suggestions for future ones. 1) Tabletop. Some footage of you running and speaking is good. But I think some indoors with you having the pack as the star would improve it. That segues into 2) while the description of the second way of carrying the trekking poles was well done, a picture (video) is worth 1000 words. Just showing us would have been even clearer. 3) Comparison to a couple of conpetitive options. Side by side, with perhaps a link to a document comparison of specs and ratings. But well done as is. Thank you.

Great video. This is looking like the perfect pack for me. One quick question though - do you think it would hold a 2l bladder without much issue?
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 3 месяца назад
It would not have an issue holding a 2 liter bladder in the back. I don't think it would hold a bigger bladder though. You can also slip a couple 500 ml soft flasks where the trekking pole sleeves are on the back/sides. Thanks for checking out the video!

hi, I have seen 5 reviews of trailrunning packs and thank you for these nice videos. Which of those 5 items do you like the most? The Mammut, The Nathan, the Ultimate Direction packs or the black diamond? And why?
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 2 месяца назад
That's a great question! I like them for different reasons but I keep coming back to my Salomon ADV SKIN 5 pack. Overall, it has pockets in all the right places and is just simply a good pack that I can use for training and racing. The Black Diamond Distance 8 pack is more of a specialty pack for me. It's a great one for hikes and mountain adventures. I also plan on using it for my 100 mile ultra race later this year. I hope that helps and appreciate you for checking out the videos!

I recently bought the UltraSpire Zygo, but now I'm wondering if i should check this one out! Looks great! Which trail were you running?? Cheers 🤠

Thanks for checking out the video. The Zygos looks like a great pack!! Maybe I'll get my hands on one for a review one of these days. In this video I ran the trails at Devil's Backbone/Blue Sky Trail, Indian Summer trail, and Coyote Ridge trail.

It's also worth mentioning that the front pockets on the Distance 8 pack are not quite big enough for a large phone. Which is probably my biggest gripe about the pockets on the front (that and not having a second zippered pocket). Failed to mention that in the video.

Hello great review 🙏 Do you think I can fit more in this 8L BD pack than the salomon active skin 12 due to salomon per liter measuring kinda confusing… it says with all the front pockets storage and back storage makes 12L Im wondering if this pack it’s really 8L on the single back storage. Thank you 🙏
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 4 месяца назад
You can fit more into the back of the Distance 8 pack vs the ADV Skin 12, but the Salomon pack will allow you to carry a bit more in the front pockets. Hope that helps!
@tbromedia

Also my one harp with the vest, at least on the Gen 1, is the zipper pocket! Can't fit my phone in it!
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 5 месяцев назад
I agree! I failed to mention this. I prefer to have access to my phone on the front of my vest (or at least a pass through pocket that I can reach behind my back like on the Salomon packs) BUT the Distance pack pockets aren't quite big enough on the front for a large phone. That's another reason why I wish the pockets were a little deeper or bigger. Great feedback and I appreciate you checking out the video!
@rundavidrun76

Oh man am I glad I read this. I was all sorts of hyped for this pack but not being able to carry a phone in the zipper pouch is a deal breaker for me. Did you mention that there’s a Gen 3 coming?
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 5 месяцев назад
@@rundavidrun76 Gen 2, or the one that I reviewed in this video is the newest one. I really should have mentioned in the video that you can't carry a larger phone in the front pockets. My bad!

Great review! I don’t like bladders so I’m curious if the running pole sleeves would hold two extra 500ml soft flasks securely when running?
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 3 месяца назад
I just tested this out and the trekking pole sleeves work perfectly to hold a 500 ml soft flask! The convenience of that is you can easily swap them to the front when you're ready for more. I've got a 40 mile runventures planned and will likely do this to bring extra water.
@kixmiller
@kixmiller 3 месяца назад
Thanks so much for checking that! I’m doing a lot of unsupported long runs where no ground water is available, and trying to PR a climb. I need more than 1L of water (without stopping and taking off a pack) and have been teetering on this pack. Looks like I’ll have to head to your link and get one! Good luck on your 40!

@@SeeChadRun Ugh... I was pretty sold on this BD pack but have been watching all of your past videos and it seems you really like the Salomon packs. I just watched your review on the Adv Skn 12 and am now wondering if that wouldn't be a better choice because of the pass through pocket. Have you ever run with additional bottles in the pass through pocket of the 12?
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 3 месяца назад
@kixmiller The Black Diamond pack and the Solomon packs each have their advantages. The Solomon pack has the pass-through rear pocket and I have stored two 500 ml soft flasks in the back (self-supported 50 mile run) although it wasn't ideal but totally doable. I've seen others do similarly, and you do run the risk of pinching the bite valve and having your water leak out. The Black Diamond pack can hold more stuff in the back but the Solomon pack has a slight advantage on pocket versatility on the front. Additionally, the Black Diamond Pack definitely has the advantage of storing trekking poles due to the dedicated sleeves. In short, I would say that the Black Diamond Pack is a little more mountain running tailored while the Salomon ADV Skin packs are a little more ultra race tailored. I hope this vaguely specific answer helps.

Do you prefer the Black Diamond Distance 8 over the Salomon ADV Skin 12?
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 5 месяцев назад
They both have their advantages. The Black Diamond is built more durable materials overall and I love the trekking pole sleeves! It's also very comfortable and built more like a mountain pack for trail runners. The Salomon ADV Skin packs have a more thought out pocket system up front which I very much appreciate (they can hold just a little bit more things and have more pocket options). I don't regret getting the black diamond pack but I think it might be a better all around pack (mountaineering, scrambling, trekking, trail running, hiking) while the Salomon pack is the better dedicated trail running pack in my opinion. In other words, if I didn't already have the Salomon ADV SKIN 5 then I would have bought the 12 instead of the Black Diamond Distance 8. Hope this helps and thanks for checking out the video!
