I am the Great Granddaughter of farmers. My grandmother grew up on a farm. It’s not a new concept for us. What some folks do not like is Black land ownership. Well, Black folks owning anything. If we were working their farms for free still, they’d love that. IJS

To be fair, a lot of white people also live problematic lives. I do not agree with anyone over at fox, but as someone from eastern europe, the “average white man” to me lives in a rotting flat, gets a small salary and doesn’t live a comfortable life. And i can hardly believe that there are no white people in america who live this way as well, including farmers. Skin colour should not be the most important factor in business of any kind. And while i do agree that the discrimination against black farmers is terrible, and it should be compensated for in some way, doing the exact same thing but switching the skin colour might not be that, at least in my opinion.

I work in a casino and the “white farmer” crowd is NOT struggling. We’ve got plenty of them that are regulars and drop several hundred dollars per hand and play for hours straight.
@@Dr.Gillingstein I’m not sure if you’ve ever been broke in your life but I grew up without heat or electricity on a regular basis and I can tell you that even if someone were an addict that the recourses to play that way don’t just appear. That being said a lot of regulars play as a hobby, there are of course problem players here and there but most people just come to play, drink and hang out with their friends.

I probably should’ve mentioned that I’ve only had one black gentleman that mentioned he was in agriculture in recent years and he didn’t play nearly as much and was only here the one time that I’m aware of. I am learning so much today! I just read about how the town where my parents live came into existence as part of a resettlement program for freed slaves. The slaves were allowed to rent the land; however, when the time came for them to be able to buy, they were not allowed to because the were considered "bad credit risks." The town was one of three areas in Arkansas were black Americans were moved to settle but then they couldn't buy it after living on it and farming it for years. Most of the land there now is owned by white farmers although the population is still predominantly black. As far as the settlement, my husband's family did not get any of it; I know that they had submitted their paperwork on time.

I'm sure it's been said in the comments, but farming is legitimately one of the most difficult careers in the country. If you want American made, farmers are doing it, against all odds and incredible pressure. Hardest working folks in the country.

Nearly any news program you watch is going to tell a story that reflects one side of things or the other. There are very few unbiased sources available any longer. 😕
It’s complicated , because ideally everybody gains. White people fear that what happened to black people will happen to them. So I’m pretty sure people think it’s that If black people get something extra because of laws, then it directly takes it from white people. And instead of getting rid of racism, it has to be transferred to white peoples, since I guess humans can’t exist without racism somewhere.
I came to know about black farmers through a book" farming while black" . The land was about slavery and sharecropping, about coercion and brutality , dangerous menial labor and just misery and sorrow. The suffering they went through in the history and still to this current day has to be addressed. US owns reparations to black farmers.
The trump gang is the problem, its not about economy or rights, its about keeping things the way they were for 100's of years. The world is over it, time to shift gears into equality, for ethnic and gender equality. Its time to go forward, and forget the stupidity we have lived by for thousands of years.

Guilt for slavery is useless and itrational. We don't need tears and bad feelings from people. We need acknowledgment of the atrocities and continuing systemic issues they caused and are ongoing today and an entire country that steps up to help fix the problems. If you want to feel guilty that you aren't helping your country become a better place but instead turned a blind eye to injustice you could take action on. That would make more sense than feeling guilt for slavery.

Farmers in my country protested by driving their tractors to the parliament building and dumping tons of manure in front of it. Farming is such a hard work that government should subsidize and support anyone willing to do it. Doesn't matter what race or nationality you are.

What is it that you don't understand?! Black farmers were SYSTEMATICALLY denied assistance because they were black. The money was to right a historical wrong. This wouldn't be an issue had they been treated fairly in the first place. They weren't. People are more upset over the righting of this wrong than the actual discrimination. Imagine what these farmers could have achieved, the wealth they could have created had they not been systematically discriminated against.

Two episodes of the truly amazing podcast 1619 are dedicated to this subject. They are called " The land of our fathers". It is absolutely heartbreaking to listen. I will never forget the story of the black farmer who lost his lands, because of the loan discrimination. But I think it is our " responsibility" to know. When you are privileged, you are completely ignorant about the suffering of others. The only way out of privilege- blindness is to educate ourselves properly.

The biggest moral of the story, is that we all need to separate the generalized concepts we know from history, from the individuals we know today. You have to understand how the past interacts with the present in order to move forward.
