That kid interviewing Rollins was a high school kid. He was interviewing Rollins for a show called Back Porch Video which was put out by a high school in Dearborn, Michigan. They recorded a lot of gigs by 80s punk bands and aired them on local tv. Actually pretty cool. And he was right about Rollins selling out.

Too much time on Rollins. You could literally have said "Greg Ginn wrote 90% of the lyrics, Chuck Dukowski wrote another 5%" and it would have rendered most of the Henry talk irrelevant. He was a frontman and a face for the band, there wouldn't have been much difference in their evolution if it was Dez or Chavo singing.

Henry built the modern myth of "OG" hardcore punk and Black Flag through his book and his endless chats about his experience in the band. Regardless of how anyone values him as a "musician", Henry Rollins can tell a tale. Especially if it makes Black Flag sound like the greatest band in the world. The evidence that is out there shows that it was actually a miserable scene and experience for him.

Funny you stick on that "Hank" point for a couple moments. He hosted, I believe 120 Minutes, with Jerry Lee Lewis back in maybe the early 90s. Lewis called him Hank and he was every bit as visibly annoyed and you suspect.

"Damaged" -era Black Flag to 1985's "In My Head" is godly & god-tier, a league/ world-class and for sure on my top 150 albums of all-time. Black Flag is bad ass & kick ass. Will be here for this for sure. My favorite podcast rules.

It’s funny how classic punk bands mention their legacy as inspiring punk of the new generation like Green Day and the offspring. As if that is anything to be proud of. American hardcore was a necessary thing at the time but it also gave people an excuse to make awful trendy music in the 90’s. People related to this stuff for bad reasons and it just shows the sad decline of popular music over time.

I downloaded the discography of Black Flag after playing GTA 5. I have to so say I didn't know about Bad Brains or Cro Mags which I still listen to but not Black Flag. Doea FEAR suck?

I get it to an extent, but Black Flag's infamy is about their contribution to the punk scene. Yes, Bad Brains, but also Black Flag. Like a lot of punk rock its not attractive. Its not meant to be. I enjoy plenty of bands that aren't necessarily good by any broadly accepted standard., but there are definitely other metrics by which a band might be judged. Black Flag's not my favorite, but I appreciate the place they had in the history of punk. Also, bro minutemen, gotta disagree. Okay okay, old punk grandpa done ranting.

Kind of amazed you guys are holding up Bad Brains. They suck hard and their "seminal" album every song sounds the damn same with really crappy recording quality. At least Black Flag are kinda fun to listen to, not that I am a fan. Minor Threat smokes both when it comes to old school hardcore.

Didn't HR make Henry sing for the Bad Brains for one show or was that pure bullshit?

Having read a lot of Converge lyrics I do have to say, they are one of the things that makes me like the band so much. No you can’t understand them (which I like in an extreme vocal delivery) and the written lyrics aren’t even always, word for word what Jacob Banon is saying in the song. But they are very poetic and often quite beautiful. I don’t entirely care about lyrics being too artsy and creative but I appreciate them when they are and Converge is a great example of good lyricism

You should do one on Tom Waits. I think he'd be a great choice because he's critically acclaimed. I personally don't like his music after listening to four or five of his albums.
