Black Girl is an American family drama film directed by Ossie Davis based on a play written by J.E. Franklin.[1] The film explores issues and experiences of black womanhood in the 1970s, including how black women were depicted and common stereotypes of the period. According to Melvin Donalson in Black Directors in Hollywood, "Black Girl is a film that explores the intricate and sometimes painful connections between mothers and daughters. Shared for historical purposes. I do not own the rights.

This was my first time viewing this film. As a young black girl growing up, my family didn't have extra money to go to the movies. I was reared in the 60s and the 70s. My life was similar to this film. I finally came to the realization that I was living in a toxic family atmosphere. I had no family support but, finally I had to detach from my family. Today, I am 64 years young and alone but, I only have peace of mind and dignity to keep me company. Life is very hard but, "still I rise". I don't know what tomorrow will bring but, as long as there is breath in my body, there is HOPE. The UNIVERSAL SPIRIT (God) led me to watch this because I had placed the question out there. Why had I suffered so in life with my family and men in my life. I pray that I can rest tonight after viewing this KNOWLEDGEABLE and PROFOUND film. All Praises Be Unto "The Most High"!!!!........... PEACE OUT...

@sugafoot777 those are not "generational curses" how is it the people who captured, enslaved, beat, tortured and unalived us has no "generational curses" to carry and pass on? That is all "generational trauma" passing from one era to the next. The unresolved hurt, frustration, pain and degradation of a people despised and disrespected throughout history. Did we curse ourselves and if so why?

Exactly, Rosie wasn’t a bad person. She had some decency to her. She just was content out of her own fears of failing. But she wanted great for her girls and for them to make something of themselves.. she just didn’t think dancing was the go to for Billie Jean. She wasn’t perfect by far, but she wasn’t a bad person to me.. just a bit misunderstood

This movie is true to life...back in the day dark skinned blacks felt that they would have a hard time trying to better themselves by going to college or a training program to support their families so the ones who did go and finish school..some of the family members resented them and didn't want to try and better themselves..that's when they say "I SHOULDA..WOULDA.COULDA!!! when my mom graduated from "a white college" in the 70s..only her aunt Mary came and my mom ordered all those graduation invitations for NOTHING...SO GO TO SCHOOL .IF THATS YOUR CHOICE...BETTER YOURSELF FOR YOURSELF!!!!

I remember as a little girl, in the 60s, first seeing Leslie Uggams, in movies, and liked her right away, became something of a role model, to me. Even though this was a script, I sure didn't like how those two sisters were ganging up on her, like a lamb in a lion's pit. But what she said before leaving that house was so touching. When she was asking the 3rd sister did she really teach a girl to dance, and she said, she sure wished she could teach someone to dance. That was such an humble admission, it actually made me cry. She won that battle, because she didn't return violent words, back to violent words. She just dusted her feet, from that place, and moved on. This movie was so revealing to truth, because there are people like those two sisters, sometimes in your own family, but basically in your own race, that won't lift a book to read, and better their life, and their eyeballs are always aimed at shooting someone else down, who choses to read. And to stop any hashtag, this goes on in every race, it's a dumb repeated pattern. So I hope young people be wise to who is around you, and don't be deceived, because they will actually make that dumb road they're on look cool, and fun to you. That road only leads to poverty, and a short life.✌🏽❤🙏🏻

Rosie was a Narcissist. She only cared about appearances and things that affected her. She chose a golden child and made everyone else feel horrible for not living up to that standard. Her expectations were unrealistic, she knew it and didn't care. Punished everyone for not jumping on board to her ideals. Amazing how this personality type seemed so prevalent in our communities. I grew up with a Rosie.

People are missing the point of the story. The problem is the mother wanted her girls to not leave her & sacrifice having their own lives to stay with her forever. why? Because the mom sacrificed a beautiful life with the man she loved to stay back and be with those girls. She felt they owed her something. Also, a lot of single mothers have a controlling relationship or unhealthy attachment to their children when there is no man in the house and no one to love them. They keep the children around to feel loved & get upset when they are ready to leave because they never healed from their childhood or relationship abandonment. You heard the mother say to the grandmother: "what love did you show me to give any to them?" That sounds like neglect and abandonment issues. I think the sisters were always envious of the main girl because she was not their real sister & their mother showed her adopted sisters more attention than she did her biological daughters. Thats why her real daughters ended up acting out- cutting school, looking for attention (love in their minds) from boys leading to teenage pregnancy, etc. This movie discusses many problems that existed in a broken black household.

They all mean well, but they all constantly tear each other down, then uplift to only repeat the same pattern again. The women each have their own wounds they are dealing with from patriarchy, gender, and race.

Unfortunately, it stems from the grandmother's neglect, unresolved hurt and abandonment of the mother... That filtered down to the mothers lack of self worth and choosing a man who didn't mean her any good and then passing on the neglect to her own children, whilst at the same time, trying to rectify the situation she was brought up in with her aunt who treated her as though she was less than, by taking care of other little girls who were neglected by their mothers... Really, ALL of them need healing, they need to speak through things, grow and move on so the cycle can stop! All can be done with God's help!

She was using some foul curses on Netta because of her jealousy. The pregnant one was a follower. She could go either way. The mother Rosie was living her life through her kids. So afraid to take a chance when her husband returned for her. He offered to pay for her to go to school herself. The grandmother was the only real one! I was happy to see Billie Jean go join Netta in college. Jealousy in families is a universal curse we can all relate to. Excellent movie. This movie makes me so grateful for growing up in a loving and supportive home environment where my parents and older siblings consistently encouraged me, as I was youngest but the first in my family to graduate from college and then earn advanced degrees. My older siblings were fortunate to secure good paying jobs with benefits without degrees, and to this day my siblings are very protective and supportive of me, as our parents transitioned from earth to glory, our mother in more recent months. In my career, I work with families where there is a lot of dysfunction, and I do as much as possible to advocate for the children including spending my own money, so it means a lot when children can have support and nurturing, even if not in their homes.

This movie right here summed up my entire life from 1960's to current, 2021. I was the one who came back home from college to help out, only to be met with rejection from the person who raised me birth children and other negative family including a birth sister as toxic as the two older sisters. I learned so much about family in the last 5 years and uf I never, ever hear or see any of them again in life it will truly be good riddance. I loved the ending because growth means letting go of things that do not serve you. And relocating to start a new is the antedote needed to free yourself from toxic family and friends, starting over in a place where you know No One and never looking back. We can not pick our parents or siblings. We can replace them, however with persons of our choice who have like minds, are supportive, positive, have family values, spiritually with growth and open minded to all possibilites. God bless who wrote this movie of relevence.

Oh replace your family oh ok so this what they do in America. The white European got you thinking like. Black folks well sell their own family out for the white man dollar. The problem is some not all black folks think because they go to schools and get a degree they go back to their families acting completely different. And you still at times end not getting that job that you wanted and you wasted all that time in the white man College. Its all about understanding communication which you should have learned in College. You only got one mother and father that can never be replaced.

I'm an older guy. White guy. This is a very emotional movie even for me whereas my growing up years were much different. Felt really painful to see the anger in these characters.... knowing that the anger is a result of a hard life. Even though it's just a movie (great acting from the cast) it felt quite realistic.

Love this movie, and never heard of it before. I just so happened to stumble upon this on RU-vid because Leslie Uggams name came up. I was curious about her role in the movie, so I watched this not thinking much of it. Certain parts had me in tears because I believe every African American in this country can relate to this movie and we all have family members just like the characters in the move. This move was awesome but it's sad it never became mainstream.

I loved the movie. This is a powerful depiction of how we hold ourselves from believing in our dreams. I love my moms but instead of encouraging our dreams, she was afraid of us being hurt. I made it a requirement for my kids to go to college and I worked until they started their own professional lives.

What an excellent movie. Very emotional. Had me crying in spots and I'm a grown man. Top notch cast. Director Ossie Davis did a fantastic job. Loved the ending too. I was lucky to meet the super nice actor Brock Peters at the SAG Credit Union back in the late 1990s and we talked all the way down to the lobby. He told me how the cast of "To Kill A Mockingbird" meets every year and how the kid actor who played Jem (Phillip Alford) was losing his hair! We had a laugh about that but how I wish I had seen "Black Girl" so I could tell him just how great he was in that awesome movie.
