Rosie did want her children to further their education, she mentioned this many times and was very disappointed when Billie-Jean quit school and thought her other two daughters wasted their lives having children instead of pursuing studies.....but the way she went about trying to encourage them was terrible!! Maybe she didn't know the best way to do this.

Actually, the mother actually wanted education for all her kids if you could understand the movie. If you listen at the end the mother stated that she was afraid that her kids would turn out like her, having no education. She said that to her mother.

It was a toxic behavior that was handed down the generation of black families. I was the 1st so when I graduated from college my mother would often say you think you better than somebody. I never really understood why until this movie. It was a taught behavior.
