1:15 "We lost the tail rotor, it's gone". Can't imagine what that must have felt like. You now know you are going to crash and even if you survive that you are likely to be shot or ripped apart by the Somalis.
Did you read the book? The film did a great job but the book is a very interesting read. I believe it caused a lot of controversy in Military circles when it released!
Cry for invader? Never. US paid so much money for military fee in other countries for politics , oil or invading control. But never buy some food or build the school for third world children. I think US army invaded other country and lose their life is karma
@@DeZug "never build school or food for 3rd world children" Nigga, they literally were just a temporary military in somalia Do you actually want fucking warlords and insurgents to rule Somalia? The country has been in war before the US even came there. And it still is.
The scene where they're crashing, the scene where the snipers drop in to try to help them, and the scene where the airborne guy falls from the rope make this the most emotional movie ever for me :'(
skvakagud did what job? The UN sat around and did basically nothing the whole time besides bring the US their vehicles once after they ordered them to so foh
You can just see the general trying to burry his stress deep down inside, knowing the mission has gone to complete shit and realizing it's far from over.
General Garrison is well respected , he had to make do on what Washington wanted and didn’t want , they refused the AC130 and tanks , he really didn’t want to send them because he already knew ,Mknight and the deltas knew it right after the briefing
@@user-zt5xg8ww2v This is what he actually shouted in real life, the real transmission is available online to listen to. Apparently Ray was one of the older and most experienced guys there. Who knows why he shouted his name, maybe Ray fell out of the chopper, maybe he was just shouting his mate's name in a desperate situation.
I think its because the pilot had more control compared to 6-1 which got hit then suddenly spinning (which probably made the pilot panic) this one took a while for it to start spinning, the pilot was probably ready for it.
There's only a couple of seconds time to react to the loss of the tail rotor, after that time has passed the centrifugal (or whatever it is) force is too strong, preventing the pilots from rising their hands to the necessary controls.
I think in this case they all survived the crash.. unfortunatelly they were all killed by Somalies save for Mike Durant who was saved before he was beaten to death by a militia squad leader (the same guy who's squad shot other surviving Super 64 crew .. )
@@sparrowlt yeah randy and gordon were cut to pieces and deliverd back to the us embassay, talk about rufff , but i guess why they earned medal of honor
It's sad how Super 62 lost both Snipers (Shughart&Gordon) and their right gunner (they were hit by and RPG shortly after letting off the snipers and then crashed near the docks. The Super 62 crew was later rescued by the crew of Super 68 - In real life it was amazing that super 68 had been hit by an RPG in the main rotor and made it back to base. Then the Super 68 crew went to Super 69-standby blackhawk and went back to save super 62 just in time.
In the Movie one Black Hawk is hit by machine gun fire but survives even though it smokes from it's rotor. Is that technically Super 68? Somethings in the movie are switched up a bit for compression purposes and thus being able to fit the story into the movie. This is why I ask, thanks!
I will forever look up to Super '64 I don't understand why, but ever since I first seen the film as a child until this very moment. This has to be my best motivation ever.....
If this movie has taught me anything; it's that the self-imposed shackles of rules & regulations, many of which are made by men who never set foot on a battlefield or have no understanding of guerrilla warfare , killed more Americans than the actual Somalis
Lenzy Williams "killed more Americans than the actual Somalis" what do you mean? That the Americans suffered more casualties than the Somalis? Common..
Lenzy Williams The main mission was a success. They got their high priority prisoners at the cost of a few casualties and 2 birds. Took out a couple hundred Somalis while they were at it.
HR. S. Austin Exactly. 19 of us for 1000 of them plus original mission of taking priority targets prisoner...mission complete. Good exchange rate in my book
+damiion666 This mission was the textbook definition of FUBAR, the casualty rate was near maximum, not only from dead, but almost everyone was wounded, a lot of them severely, they were surrounded on all sides, there was virtually no escape for those that remained after the convoy left, if reinforcements didn't come soon enough way more soldiers would have died that day
one of the best movie...... i never get bored of watching this movie again and again.............. salute to those brave us soldier who fought there.......
@Reconseal4050 Raul3k11 is right without a tail rotor or the equivalent of one on the rear of the helo the torque makes it impossible to fly the helicopter. They used auto rotation to set the bird down as gently as possible by essentially changing the angle of the blades to increase drag before touchdown. This slows the aircraft down and raises the chances that the crash will be survivable.
Werent the avionic displays at 0:44 only added in the UH60M models in 2001? I wonder what they used when shooting the movie since it was shot in 2000-2001 and UH60Ms didnt start delivery until 2006.
@MarineCorpsRaiders Because its the fear and anxiety that comes with the thought of "Oh shit where is this bird gonna land" And the guy next to him Raymond A. Frank so the only name and person he could have thought of was his friend and fellow pilot.
If you ask me it’s not about underestimating the enemy, it’s about not letting idiots who don’t know what their doing make decisions on how to combat the enemy

To anyone who worked on the Black Hawk, is the tail section and rotor really that strong to enable some level of controlled flight after being hit by an RPG? Also, if they had more time, is it standard procedure to increase airspeed? Maybe I'm talking out of my ass, but whenever I have a rotor loss in FSX I do such procedure and it helps. In Arma it's the same thing.
There is a book about this event. And in the movie when another black Hawk was bringing in medics to super 61 they were shot at quite a bit near their main rotor. It wasn’t in the movie but in the book when that Black Hawk got back to base and was beginning to descend to land they suddenly lost all power and came down hard for a crash landing. All survived and for the pilots they jokingly said luckily our seats are well cushioned and we weren’t so high up.
1:14: "we lost the tail rotor it's gone,......six four going down.....six four going on......six four going down we going down........arghhhh" : 1:36 Sorry if it's wrong
Actually he doesnt yell "arghhhhh" he yells "RAY!" which is his co-pilot's name. Ive read the pilot's book, he said he doesnt know why he yelled his name but he did it. Thats the only thing ya missed tho
This crash couldn't be prevented even if tried hard. When you lose the tail rotor at that altitude you have no room to spin to keep going fine and dandy..
Yeah.If they were fliyng too low, he couldn't give Air support. The same way a RPG coudn't hit them, they couldn't hit the Somalian, only with a sniper (i think). And their mission there was to give Air Support. Sorry for the bad english.
Very sad part but the soldiers worked their asses to getting into the Rangers, Delta Force, and nightstalkers. Which is sad. Without them, we would have been a crumpled piece of metal. GOD BLESS AMERICA
The X Files You're right he did, but they should not have went in if they knew it would be that much resistance. Therefore, either they didn't know, which means they fucked up, or they knew and went in, which means they fucked up.
***** Not really his choice. The US was there to represent the UN and capturing Mohammed Farah Aidid. They were supposed to do it in 3 weeks but because of the stupid UN "Don't shoot until shot at" policy it dragged to 6 weeks. The plan was supposed to have Delta extract high priority targets that were advisors and cabinet members of Mohammed Aidid. While the 4 chalks gaurded the building and then left with the convoy. This was their best chance and it did help because at the end the US still finished the mission. Unfortunately the UN left Somalia to it's faith. Which later they would fuck up again in Rwanda. Although yes the General was aware of the risk.
Not entirely true. It's less that they were thrown out, and more that they were pulled out by politicians back in Washington. It's also worth noting that the entire scenario was the result of politicians deciding that the US Army had to play with kid gloves on, and weren't going to be permitted to have an AC-130 Specter gunship, during a daylight operation, and without heavy armor support. If they'd had a single AC-130, the entire area around the market would be a crater.
AC-130 Gunships targeting the biggest concentrations of militias indiscriminately would have done it. Clear the field preventively. Some stupid person up the chain of command did not approve them.
... some stupid person who probably served in Vietnam based on the timeline and might know the basics of international law... namely, the excessive and unnecessary destruction of property (you know... the city) constitutes a war crime. Chewing up the houses with bullets and light rocket strikes is one thing. AC-130 fire missions would destroy entire blocks. Not to mention the goal was to bring stability to the country. Now you can criticize that mission as being pretty hopeless to start with. But blasting sections of the biggest city in the country back to the Stone Age might be counterproductive to domestic bliss -.-
my other brother said, when the women are crying and the bullets are flying. we'll be there. to paraphrase, a little girl asks for help, operator says, eta five minutes
@lilgux Don't think they're all the same, now. :) Many Somalians were happy to have the americans there. Most of the ones fighting US forces were doing so because the militia commanders were the ones giving heavily rationed food out to their families.
one hit kill ? in the book it says that the ranger's and delta's 5.62mm greenpoints (bullets) didnt kill unless the target was shot multiple times. and for the semi auto thing? if the soldiers used there weapons on semi-auto it was probbly near the end of the battle when they relised that they'd need to save ammunition.
@imthemarine well hmm from what i saw...... when they were dropping their chalks i heard 6-4 said '' This is super 6-4 chalks on the ground going into ???? (forgot the rest) then later on...... Eversman's team is still being deployed by super 6-1 When the pilot said that one of their man fell there was a reply saying '' Super 6-1 you are sitting ducks out there '' so i think evers was really in Super 6-1... sorry if it took so long
Only 4 Blackhawks were left that day out of the 9 Blackhawks. Surviving Blackhawks: Super 63 (C2 Bird) Super 65 Super 67 (Carried Chalk 4, Super 61 only carried snipers and no chalks unlike in the movie where they took chalk 4) Super 69 Downed Black Hawks Super 61 Super 62 (hit by an RPG just after delivering the snipers) Super 64 Super 66 (hit after the re-suply run at night, rangers actually ran out of ammo and fought with bare hands for a while) Super 68 (RPG hit in the main rotor)
Anyone know where they crashed the 2nd black hawk in the film? interestingly enough i found the movie Super 61 in a now paved crossroads just laying on it's side on googles earth and you can see some film crew and the chopper right there in the street. I just havn't found 64s crash site from the movie yet.
This would make a phenomenal straight punch in Washington's face for not allowing Apache support and night time AC-130 availability. Just letting the Navy and Air Force support that op would have saved a lot of the heartache. Ole Salad Tosser Billy Bob Cunton wanted thia mission to happen but like his useless wife, didn't want to actually use the proper effective resources to do it.
Yeah but they got overrun oretyt quickly and Streukers column couldn't get to the crashsite either so the team they released may not have arrived until an hour maybe even three hours after they were overrun.
@Heyitzj0sh I think jumping out of a helicopter spining out of control at such a low altitude would be more dangerous than just sitting in the helicopter and crashing...
It's usually a pause to give people the chance to write down what your saying every time you talk on the radio someone is listening to it writing everything down.
He said "Ray". The name if his co pilot. And anyone who has a profile picture of himself in uniform who doesn't know this, has no right to be in uniform.
Wayofkicks I never claimed he said "ray" or "break" I was simply explaining to her what break meant when said over a radio you can calm down keyboard warrior. :-)
