We sit down with previous guest and former Ranger and Delta Force operator Brad Thomas as he sets the record straight about what happened back in Mogadishu and how his recollection of one event (as he shared back on Episode 58) was different than what another person remembered.
Join hundreds of others with our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan each week about the show, life, and the military.
In the former interview, Brad describes a "jackass lieutenant" running around during the battle collecting fastropes because they were an accountable item. The individual in question listened to the interview and contacted Brad to explain what was actually going on.
Being the standup guy that he is, Brad immediately wanted to acknowledge this new information and share that we often don't recall things as they were.
Many will recall Brad gave up a promising musical career to serve, first with Ranger Battalion and then finding his way into Delta Force. His first combat experience was in Mogadishu in what we know as Black Hawk Down as part of 3rd Ranger Battalion in a true baptism by fire.
Since leaving the military, Brad returned to his passion: music. He gathered a group of veterans who now make up the band “Silence and Light” and saw far more success than they expected on their debut album.
We sit down today to discuss misinterpretations on the battlefield and clarify a situation discussed in Brad's interview from two years ago (Ep58).

@@WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot290 A lot of people either don't know about that episode of his life (possibly because they've never heard of RRD/RRC!), or simply fail to recall that part of his resume, possibly because he rarely talks at length about it, or because his career was so long and filled with so many other truly impressive achievements and moments that his years at RRD occasionally get lost in the sauce. Also, his years in RRD coincided with the mid-to-late-90's, a period that was relatively quiet and didn't present the opportunity to really expose service persons and their units to combat, develop skills down range in real world conditions, and test their abilities from the individual all the way on up to brigades/divisions/etc..

We crushed the American troops, we got captured most of their guns and packages of ammunition and armored vehicles, In Mogadisho, so the US troops were Threatening us and had aggressive treatment to the society, they were involving covertly operations in mogadisho hunting senior tribal warlords, and was former general commanders of the Somalia military regime that collapsed in the civilwar, so Blackhawk down is history that Americans never forget, if you tried to act as aggressively and provoke us we can do worser than that history. Now things is much heinous and brutal act people become bloodsucking after they kill someone.

Very good Sir, for stepping up. They are so many angles and so many reasons some folks do what they do in the giving situations and what is their mind set at that given time. My hats off to both of you setting everyone straight on what happen.

Thank you for the reminder about the things we remember from the past are perhaps only our individual perception of the events. I recently reconnected with my CBTeam members from 1970/1 and our email exchanges revealed exactly the dichotomy of our perceived facts you described. Kinda humbling. Thanks for bringing these thoughts to the light of day.

Ok this is a much better clarification than the last one, because it doesn’t just state the misperception, but also what actually happened: that the Lieutenant was accounting for the possibility that there might be more fastroping to do before returning to base for resupply. That makes complete sense and has Mission value instead of just admin CYA value. Thanks for enduring and following up on audience frustrations that the previous clarification attempt didn’t clarify. It’s not important because that day is Any of our business, but because 1. It’s an engaging element of the story told in the original episode, and became even more important with the first clarification attempt, premised on the notion that it Was something important to get right 2. the Battle of Mogadishu and surrounding events became an important part of American military history, both as learning that led to advancement in military practice, and as a key event in the public’s sense of American attempts to project power, and to do so at risk to American lives. It’s a story that’s continued to fascinate and inform so many, through numerous publicly available reports and interviews and panel discussions, and of course through the popular theatrical dramatization. Honestly, considering one of the big lessons from those events was to account for the fact that what seems like a quick errand may end up being a marathon effort, that Lieutenant’s mindset of maintaining equipped-ness while outside the wire (even if obliviously violating TTPs in that present moment and urgent priorities in hindsight) at least becomes that much more sensible. Sometimes you end up glad you have the stuff you didn’t expect to need. As a bonus, everything else covered here is really interesting too :) Thank you both :)

Does not take away from the rope was in the movie so the story of the rope got told and at some point it was abandoned but would be SOP that its no longer worth anything. I only respect the officer having some back bone to complain he did not like it. I met a Ranger Captain from 2nd BN during a senior leader transition seminar and we did mock interviews on video and they all laid into me first as I only one with an interview but I got to question the Captain and he was impeccable which I respected and would of never got to talk to him they way we did as we trying to break the interviewee. I got my job and lasted another 23 years at it. My mentor at my new job was a former 160th radio operator who was on the command and control bird.

Well if you're in ranger battalion and you Have been tasked to make sure something gets back or with some certain sensitive. It's like all common sense goes out the window. because you know when you get back from the mission, and you didn't bring back the s*** You were a tasked to bring back. Your screwed. As much as I love Ranger battalion and I loved serving with those amazing guys. Ranger battalion is very standard Drivin. Sometimes to a fault. RLTW 3/75

Bro why did it take so long to answer the question....? "Why did this CO pick up the fast ropes?". Like why is this podcast taking this long to asnwer the question doesn't make your podcast better, it doesn't make his answer better. It just pisses people off. Answer the f***ing question. I don't need to sit around for 30 minutes so you can dance around the answer. Ask the question, briefly explain the background, and ANSWER THE F***ING QUESTION!!!

@erickiyoshiphillips2323 - I was either the youngest or 2nd to youngest member of TFR at 19. I honestly can’t remember if I was the youngest or 2nd youngest though lol. It’s been a long time. But Brad Thomas would have been at least a couple/few years older than me so he’s most likely somewhere in his early 50s now.
