Visit the scenic Black Hills of South Dakota for a look at a steam railroad! The Black Hills Central Railroad is the oldest continuously operating tourist railroad in the united states, opening for business in the 1950's. The railroad hauls passengers on an hour long trip between the towns of Hill City and Keystone, just a few miles from famed Mount Rushmore. Ride the train from Hill City to Keystone and back. All aboard!

What a magnificent railroad. Such beautiful locos and rolling stock. And the video almost makes you feel you were there. Videos like this are a godsend to the housebound. Thanks so much for sharing.

I remember taking a ride on this railroad when I was a kid, probably 10 or 11 years old. Shortly after that the tracks were washed out by a flood, I recall. Glad to see it is still going strong

The steam locomotive in the video is A 2-6-6-2T Baldwin logging mallet built for the Weyerhaeuser timber company in 1928, she was then later sold to Rayonier and eventually went to a museum in Nevada, The BHCR purchased 110 in 1999 and finished restoration in 2001. Nowadays she’s reunited with her sister 108. I hope you all learned something from this.
@MadDogg4021

They have 3 of them now. 110 in the video, 108, and one that’s green, 109 I believe. Plus the diesel also in the video.

THE TIME IS MEOW! That's not a Lima 5 chime. It's a CB&Q 5 chime. The CB&Q could have possibly copied the Lima design.

what a fascinating engine, is this some sort of 2-6-6-2 mallet? Can you tell me more about this engine and it's history?
@CoasterFan2105
@CoasterFan2105 8 лет назад
+av8bud Yes, it is one of only two 2-6-6-2T's currently operating. It was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1928 for Weyerhaeuser Timber in Washington state. It was later sold to Rayonier and finally retired in 1968. It was on display at a few different locations before coming here in 1999. Restoration was completed in 2001.

@CoasterFan2105
@CoasterFan2105 8 лет назад

That's the first 2-6-6-2 tank engine I've ever seen. I'm surprised it can hold enough water and what little tender it can carry to make it through the trip. Is this a narrow gauge? Of course, the diesels suck.
@CoasterFan2105
@CoasterFan2105 5 лет назад
It is a standard gauge operation. They recently purchased a second 2-6-6-2T, which is being restored.

Silly question---is this as fast as the train goes through out the whole ride? I am trying to talk myself into a train ride through the west, but I don't ride well with others and I usually do the driving. I'm getting a little anxious just watching the video.......but want to do this!!
@CoasterFan2105

Yes, that's about as fast as it goes, but it's not a very long ride. About an hour and a half round trip if I remember correctly.
