I am constantly and deplorably amazed at how the African descendent scholars and intellectuals persist on referring to our ancestors as "slaves", "African slaves", "Black slaves" etc. as if "a slave" is an actual GENETIC/biological state of being RATHER THAN "SLAVERY" being a circumstance or manner of imprisonment FORCED upon HUE-MAN BEINGS! My ancestors are HUEMANS! Created beings shaped, formed and breathed into existence by the Almighty Creator of the entire universe! My ancestors do not need to be nor do they deserve to be referred to as BEING the "institution" by which we were ENslaved!
I want to give a shout out to all my black people in canada im from louisiana but im a proud afrikan man and i love all black people everywhere i first got hipped to black canadians reading about the 1968 black writers confrence and the socalled riot in the aftermath
What an incredible round table discussion! I'm so grateful to also have been introduced to my Canadian Black history in my first year of university by Dr. Andrea Davis and just took so much more out of this discussion. Let's keep talking about this and the history of mixed peoples of all diasporas in Canada. History is key to identity.
Absolutely enjoyed this women-led conversation and how all of us are implicated by Canada's slave history. We can no longer put blinders on. We need more and more of these conversations. Thank you
The face you make when realize that slavery was abolished in the British empire 33 years before canada was established as a country. Given these facts it would be legally impossible to have owned a slave in all Canadian history!
Ok you obviously are not a student of history the french colonized canada from 1608 the founding of quebec until 1763 when they ceded new france as they called it to the british and the british didnt abolish slavery until 1833 both british and french enslaved afrikans in canada just not as wide spread as they did in america and lastly canada didnt not become official independent until 1982 in 1867 canada was granted self governing status within the british empire it was not a sovereign nation open up a book and read before you get in the comment section
Lol, she made a comment saying Canada did have slaves trying to prove me wrong, but then deleted it because it was false. I’m honestly dead, these people are just looking for a reason to feel bad for them
12:10 noticed they don't really have any answers, they don't have anything to offer Canada....but they wanna be part of what Natives,Inuits and Metis has helped built.....kinda hard to offer something when the very cultures and languages is still here and alive since way before Blacks and Whites ever set foot here....
I'm very proud to say to my family and friends, Canada Have Black History Month! Black history is similar throughout the African diaspora. Place to Place, Country to Country! In the USA we have to include our Native Brothers and Sisters also!
There are many African American Canadians, who share their Ancestry with their African American cousins. We have traced our Ancestry. The challenge is keeping our History alive with the next generations. I am the 1st generation born after segregated Nova Scotia.
Canada is more about Natives,Inuits and Metis the very people who build North America....Blacks didn't do much for Canada in fact its kinda insulting Towards Natives and Inuits Blacks forget that North America is Native land....look at America and how they overlooks Natives and talk lots about Slavery.....of course People don't know much about Black history in Canada because the very people who comes from this land are still alive and strong...plus these people should learn more about Residential schools before talking about Black history its like they are overlooking residential schools... Just because Canada focus more on Natives and Inuits....if they wanna feel special move to America....and what about the Blacks entering Canada illegally? These people forget that this is NATIVE LAND!!!! Plus what about these blacks in America saying there are original people of north america...,
That’s not true. You just don’t know about it because Canada chooses to cover up their anti black racism. Racism against black people is worst when you consider that NATIVE AMERICANS HELD BLACKS AS SLAVES.
