She's all about perfect control, and it's wildly appreciated. Every note is so calculated and only as showy as the mood requires. Very impressive vocalist.
@@madtiboysen5397 It's all so ingrained in her that "instinctive" is a more appropriate term than "calculated". Whatever. I'm only nit-picking, because I agree with what you're saying overall.
ripped it hard at the end of the song. had to pick my jaw up off the floor the first time i heard this.... just recently this time too. to hell with american idol. a cancer of our culture that is.... her ,on the other hand, should be a national treasure
Bonnie Tyler and Leonard Cohen have the (throat nodules / not really cancer) and (post-whiskey/nicotine) rasp, respectively that you crave. after short circuit 2 - pump up the volume, they both were added to my personal permanent rotation. they are almost dead from old age. give the albums 'secret dreams and forbidden fire' and 'the future', respectively, a listen.
Not to take anything away from Haley, but the backing musicians are outstanding and you gotta give it up to the arrangers and producers too... but damn, Haley just freakin' nails it EVERY time...
She got third in American idol because... well you can’t auto tune something that doesn’t need it. Type of singing that’s dying out, and so sad that it is because there’s so much heart and soul... please keep going!
Singing, music, is not about competition, despite the many competitive shows. If there are two or three outstanding musicians, there are two or three outstanding musicians, why do people have to say who wins, who is best! It isn’t a running race. So you like one more than another. Who should win a painting competition, Rembrandt or Monet? Obviously, it is nonsense. 🇦🇺
@@katehobbs2008 true, but if you can sing, why use auto tune? It’s just sad that the looks computer gains the capital. She has the looks and the talent. That was my point. However, you’re not wrong. Everyone’s gonna hate something “great” and love something “bad”. Opinions are nearly non negotiable. To be ornery in a playful way... Monet. Rembrandt was only good at the Friends theme song... 🤣. Seriously, good point though
Blame the rise of Autotune and Melodyne on MTV. All MTV turned into was a fashion show and an outlet for people who thought they were talented, but in reality weren’t. Don’t believe me? Watch the best thing MTV ever did and hear for yourself. The Unplugged show was truly awesome and would give viewers the chance to learn which bands had chops and who were nothing more than over promoted mediocre to pure crap. Pearl Jam was one of the good ones. Better yet were Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Aerosmith. One of the worst of the top MTV a bands was Ratt. They could barely play and the singer flat out sucked. The only stand out was Warren DeMartini who was an excellent guitarist. Since I’m old now and had to play covers of those mostly simple structured 1990s era songs. I remind all the young ones who may read this that bands like The Beatles ALL played at the same time, in the same room, and did 20-40 takes per song and the producer chose the best one prior to the invention of multi track recording. One of the best albums ever recorded was done in 1967 on two tape decks synced together with tons of overdubbing, track bouncing, track cutting and splicing. All under the watchful eye of the great Sir George Martin from the BBC. He didn’t even want the job as he was already head of the classical department there back in 1962. Although Paul McCartney wrote for the Bind movie theme. It was Paul who contacted Mr. Martin to work with him back in 1976 on this composition. Martin even share writing credits on this song as he was the one who wrote and arranged all the orchestra parts as well. By this time 24-track recording machines existed and they tied two of those together to have enough tracks. Same thing Queen did around the same time to capture their amazing layers of vocals as well as instruments. I can only hope with all the computerization of music today, bands like the one here will still continue to exist to demonstrate what truly skilled performers, arrangers, recordist, and video editors can do when given the chance.
@@ra3016 lol. even this is pitch-corrected with auto-tune. The robotic auto-tune you hear a lot isn't because those singers can't sing. Even rebecca black could actually sing. Music elitism is so funny in how ironically uneducated it often is.
Haley has her own music too that is so amazing. You should check out her new album Better. And she is on tour right now. Hearing that voice live is seriously an experience I think everyone needs to have.
I want to push all of those buttons and make it sing out!... err uhm on the trumfulclariphone thing or whatever you call it. That's probably weird enough. I'm going to edit the trombone slide part out.
If she's a siren in disguise, that's a pretty lousy disguise. But, well, I'm a fool; she sure could lure me to my death with that voice and her presence.
+Zulkhairee Sulaiman she's gorgeous and is an insane vocalist who can sing many genres. That's more than 80% of today's artist. Plus she has an awesome personality. but you're right I think luck plays a big role.
+Zulkhairee Sulaiman the only thing with her though is that her music on her albums don't reflect her genuine nature for music. They seem too produced and edited, but the thing is she doesn't need the editing because she's already amazing.
Why would you even attempt to rank something this beautiful with the average, disposable aural clutter at the "top of the charts"? Those songs exist, cosmically speaking, in the hopes that one day Haley Reinhart will cover them.
Her song Free from a few years ago is really good. Remember, she was on Idol back in 2011 (with Casey Abrams who will also appear on here occasionally).
I love the way she belts out "Black Hole Sun, Black Hole Sun, Black Hole Sun" toward the end of the song...she nails it, and she seems to nail it almost effortlessly...just a stroll in the park. Amazing voice, and hats off to the accompaniment...top notch.
Chris Cornell has on occasion referred to the duality of the song. "I liken it to Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, where there's a happy veneer over something dark. It's not something I can do on purpose but occasionally it will happen by accident."
I think this is what Grunge meant to show. Throwing it at the happy mainstream cheeriness, and giving a "voice" to the darker but oh so real sides off life, embrace it and not be afraid to accept these feelings in oneself.
So many modern day female pop, hip-hop, and R&B singers try and fail to achieve a pure jazz singer style of vocal but she truly has mastered it. Forget the fakes, this one is the real deal.
@@johnpomeroy6931 Which is more impressive, an artist that can take 20 different songs and make them sound good in their own style or an artist that can take 20 different songs and sing them well in their original styles? I'm of the opinion that they are both equally impressive and there is a place for both in the world. When I go and see a cover band the only thing I care about is the songs sounding good.

This video was posted 7 years ago. Is it OK that I’m still listening and making comments? I have loved this lady since American Idol and was so disappointed she didn’t win. She’s much better off because PMJ is the perfect vehicle for her skills. ❤ to all the musicians!
I’m actually happy Haley didn’t win American Idol. She has tons more freedom to create content for us without the cigar chomping exec getting in her way. Super talented, super creative, and super beautiful is a wonderful winning formula.
Well, there's also the odd fact that a lot of times, the people who come in 2nd or 3rd do better than the winners, which has been going on since Star Search.
@@pfoster1666 That is 100% a thing. The winners pump out a ready-made album and fade into obscurity. Second or third places in those trashy 'contests' inevitably get snapped up by, like, real record labels, looking for talent.
This is her eighth recording with PMJ. Just a couple more and Scott will be able to release A Best of Haley Reinhart With PMJ album. Indeed, I'm looking forward to it.
There is a entire production team yes, and they all contribute to the end product. Just face it, Haley and her intuition just lifts each note to a different level. I will never get enough of Haley's voice and her approach to music.❤😊
For real, all music can be appreciated and respected, though I definitely agree the old styles should be appreciated and listened too still. Just because new music exists doesn't mean the old should fade, and just because you like old music doesn't mean new music is trash. With the 20's coming back around in a month, how about we bring back jazz for this century too!!!
@@beefonweckeastside3323 Just because You don't like today's music doesn't mean it's bad. People are likely more drawn to music made in their era because it has more relatability with things they experience, or maybe they just like it. People have different tastes and yours is not the only one, so please stop! :)
I was an incredibly massive Chris Cornell fan and with that, a Soundgarden fan since 1988. I learned guitar and started singing with Chris as an inspiration. His vocal range and sound was a rare gift. It means so much to me to hear this respectable and fresh cover of Chris's work. You did a phenomenal job everyone 😊 I Love this cover. Hailey, your vocals are gorgeous. Ladies and gents, you play so beautifully. Great job 👍 I'm scared of covers ruining the original and disrespecting the artists who composed the original. But you all knocked this out of the park 😉

Absolutely brilliant. Haley's voice never ceases to amaze me. The scat singing, her incredible range and composition. Scott Bradlee, you have always been such an inspiration to me. You've absolutely done it again. Brilliant work to all. Really loving the orchestral vibes in this vintage interpretation. Top hats off to all.
I had the chance to see PMJ perform live at Sunfest music festival in West Palm this year. Scott, you told me that it's never too late to get back into music. I've thought about your words every day since then! Continue kicking ass! Sincerely, one of the (if not THE) biggest PMJ fans in the world, alive or dead.
I like her but there is no one but Screaming Jay Hawkins for that song. He deserves that honor. She's good and should stick to other songs, leave the classic to a classic act.
I’m a simple man, I need a 2 hour long personal concert of Haley Reinhardt singing jazz standards to me and me alone. My wife has approved this so it’s not cheating
as a person that loves rock music and loves singing jazz... holy fuck, i cant believe what she does with her covers -- these are incredible. i've discovered these WAY too late. thank you extra gum haha.
Miss Reinhart is a classic voice that is hard to come by. I am a 90's kid, I think this song very much needed to be done in this way and she is just the one to do it. ;)
This just makes me wanna her do more alt rock and grunge. I would love to hear Muse (Supermassive Black Hole, Plug in Baby or Hysteria), Nirvana (I'd kill to hear Lithium or Heart Shaped Box), STP (Plush or Interstate Love Song), Pearl Jam (Jeremy, Black or maybe Alive), more Strokes (Reptilia or Last Nite), Arctic Monkeys (Crying Lightning or Arabella, maybe R U Mine or Do I Wanna Know), Gorillaz (Feel Good Inc or maybe Clint Eastwood or Rhinestone Eyes) or Blur (THE UNIVERSAL PLEEEEASE or Girls and Boys or Coffee and TV), and maybe some Panic! at the Disco (I Write Sins not Tragedies, This is Gospel, and Death of a Bachelor) or Paramore (literally anything off Riot)
Personally, i'd love to hear Starlight, or Stockholm Syndrome by Muse covered by PMJ. But the others are fantastic choices as well. Now that I think of it, i'd like to hear all of those covered by them too.
Xadaj127 Starlight would be great. I don't know if they'd do Stockholm Syndrome because while it's big amongst Muse fans, it's really not that popular in the mainstream. If they do any Muse, it will probably be Starlight, Hysteria, Madness or maybe Dead Inside or Mercy.
@@DBGalkin A good suggestion. I'd forgotten he existed, and when I was aware of him in th e60's I loathed Diana so much that I never listened to him any more. However, he's a very much changed singer since that age ago, and his version is very good, the next best cover to Haley's for me.
befingered - I didn’t notice for a long time that virtually every PMJ video is like this. 1 continuous take from a single camera. It makes Haley’s performance even more amazing. Betty Boop down to hands and eyes for the first 3 minutes and then she goes for more. I love it!
I'm not one of these people but a lot of people can't get over the bubbly interpretation of an otherwise darker song. Even if that's true, she just does it so well, who cares?
Maybe people who don't care for the warbling ostentatious style of singing. I didn't downvote, but I can understand those who might based on the actually quality disparity between this sweet song bird vs. the subdued yet powerful original. A stripped-down, bluesy version would fit the lyrics better. This simply reeks of *novelty*. Not a serious interpretation.
Whenever I'm down this has been my go to song for a pick me up; put some headphones in, close my eyes, and let the siren's song take me away. Thanks for the past 5+ years of relief, you all truly deserve much more recognition.
When a song is born masterpiece, it can also be arranged differently from the original and will always be wonderful. And this girl with a beautiful and powerful voice, with this fantastic arrangement, gives me confirmation. Huge Soundgarden .. Excellent Haley Reinhart!
I don't know about females, but if you are a male, it's the whole package especially in music videos. Indeed. it's the voice first and foremost, of course, but then it's also the body, the face, the hair, the clothes, her sex appeal, her personality, her character, etc., etc., etc. Everything and Ms Haley Reinhart scores a home run on all of it. She's the total package. Indeed, she's destined to stardom. She's beautiful inside and out and also extremely talented and versatile.

Between this and her "Creep" cover, she has become my favorite whisper-to-a-scream singer, and one hell of a song stylist. Brava, Miss Reinhart, brava! P.S. I especially love her exquisitely timed hand gesture at 3:50. Nice touch. She isn't just a helluva singer, she's a helluva performer.
Idol had to try to get on the country market. The Voice had just started and was tapping into country. They did not want Haley to win you could tell by the negatives from JLo and Randy nearly every week when reviewing Haley. The only one of the three judges that knew anything about how much talent she had and didn't care what the producers said was Steven Tyler.

Haley Reinhart is one of the captivating vocalists alive. You can just here that proud-to-be-sexy nuance in every word. And when she belts. Damn!!! You go girl :)
She is damn good, and half the reason I come back around here. The other half is Morgan James. Check out her recent Dream On rendition. It's simply amazing. (And Puddles is really good, too)
