Thank you so much for this video! I have been researching take-down recurve bows and these were the two I was considering. For exactly the purposes you referred to. I eventually get into bow hunting, but want to get good first so, as you mentioned, it's a clean kill. I have spent half my life camping, hiking, mountain biking ect. so I know the outdoors, but a bow would really make it a lot funner. thanks!!

Helpful video. I agree with your recommendations. I have had a Black Hunter for almost two years with longbow limbs. It is a fine bow! But I am now looking for a more versatile riser with attachment points for a quiver, stabilizer, etc. There are traditionalists, those who like the latest compound bows and gadgets, and crossbows. It is all a form of archery. I enjoy it all. Many new Trad archers are hesitant to mount accessories on their bows to avoid criticism. Just do what works for you! I know plenty of hard core Trad hunters that shoot indigenous style bows but run cameras and constant surveillance on deer. Nothing traditional about that, but it works! There are far more archers than purists. Just enjoy archery, it is awesome. For us hunters, it is nice to have easily adaptable accessories.

The black hunter looks like a great choice for people with small hands like myself. I say that because I have a number of recurves from the 60’s and 70’s like for instance, the Browning Cobra 2. It’s a beautiful bow but hard to shoot for me because the riser grip feels like the thick end of a baseball bat. Also, for a beginner archer I think it is better to just learn how to shoot well first and forget all the accessories . The biggest mistake beginners make is buying a bow to where the poundage is too much for them to learn proper form and creates bad habits right out the gate. Leave your egos at the door and start with a 35lb @28” bow. 55” long is a good length to start with as shorter bows like the Bear super mag are harder to learn with. Arrows can be a make or break also. If the arrow isn’t spined properly for your bow, you will have a hard time also. So many archers give up early because of all these things and never learn how to become the arrow which gives immense satisfaction when conquered.

Thanks for this; it's an unusual and helpful comparison. FYI, the riser on the Mandarin Black Hunter is 15" long. There seems to be disagreement about the length of the Samick Sage riser, but 21" is more commonly quoted than other lengths.

You can always drill a rise if you have the equipment to do it for mounting stuff... easy to do. LOL! As long as you do not mess up the strength of the rise or crack it... not sure about laminate for this... might buy a riser for my Black Hunter by itself and drill it out and see how that works later... any way... currently I prefer my Mongolian Horse Bow for traditional archery. It is the best... LOL! Beautiful comparison on these... thanks for your review and point of view.

Your general point is which is better for a beginner. My first bow was a Samick Sage, out the box I was hitting center shots. Its a very easy to pick up and use bow and out the box you don't really feel like you need to do anything to it. It has a big sight window, so it's easy to see and it's shelf just allows arrows to fly with little issue. To quote a great archer, Arrows go where you point. The Black Hunter is the sexier bow. It has less options, its shelf doesn't allow for arrows to just fly with minimal issue. Smaller window. But it's the sexier bow. Its easy to sell it as the best between the too. Its smaller, sleeker, has a nice pistol grip, has a nice name. While the Sage is bulky, heavier, doesn't have a name like Black Hunter. Black Hunter sounds like a comic book character. Samick Sage....it should've been call The Sage. Sage is for the gritty archer than wants the bulk and weight. Hunters that want clean hits. Black Hunter if you're in your backyard and you wanna show your non archer friends a nice looking bow. The thing that sets the Sage from the Hunter to me is growth. You can grow with the Sage. It's not just a beginner bow, it's an intermediate bow, its an experienced bow. Its a bow you'll likely keep using from first bow til it can't shoot no more. Where as the Black Hunter? It's a bow you'll end up hanging up on your wall. An advanced archer, experienced archer...would just get a better bow meant for the experienced and give the Hunter to their kid...or again mount it.

Go with what ever fits your fancy, but start with low poundage first. If your a person that likes to use gadgets then a bow like the sage or any of its copies will be great for you. If you prefer a more traditional looking bow then the black hunter style would be great. Both bows are takedown so order a set of limbs in 45-50 pounds to hunt with when your ready and have a set of 30-35 limbs to practice with. Keep in mind though you will need different spine arrows for each set of limbs. For your hunting arrows I would recommend bump up one spin weight and add a weighted insert or use heavy points for higher FOC (front of center). That will help with penetration on game, also to DO NOT SHOOT really light weight arrows they could cause damage to your bow. Hope this helps have fun and shoot straight

@BigRigOutdoors
@BigRigOutdoors 3 года назад
Traditional Bows in general are very quiet, most of the time the arrow hitting the target is louder then shooting the bow. For example I often shoot off my back deck only a few feet from my kitchen window while my wife is making dinner and she never hears the bow shoot. Not to mention there are a number of ways to make a bow quieter with string dampeners and limb dampeners, heavy arrows and so forth. But the sage is a little quieter.

@@nenolaura2199 if all your going to be doing is target shooting I would use aluminum or carbon. If you decide to hunt then the aluminum would fit for that purpose very easy. @@BigRigOutdoors never buy aluminium - once bent they can never be straightened - wood and carbon arrows shoot great out of a recurve. You forgot to mention that with the same arrow weight and same bow draw weight - the Black Hunter is considerably faster that than the Samick - at least mine is.
@BigRigOutdoors
@BigRigOutdoors 3 года назад
@@waynejohnson6889 My samick sage shoots faster then my black hunter but that's because my black hunter is a longbow lol. Recurves usually run a little fast then most longbows of similar length and material make up. Aluminum arrows are great for beginners because of cost and if not bent badly they can be straightened if bent badly the you got a great bunny buster arrow or glue some fluflu feathers on and use them to shoot Ariel targets lots of fun.

G'day Mr Rig. I think you are mistaken about the Black hunterriser not being cut past centre. Measure with string from the centre of limb bolt to limb bolt, will prove the riser is cut past centre. What they havent done is square out the shelf to the riser which would make it a true 'past centre' riser. Its a simple process to sneak a bit of wood out and square it up without compromising the structure of the riser. The vertical window side of the riser can do with a bit of a rasp to flatten the area where a rest can be glued to shoot plastic vanes. I did this for my kids as they are hard on arrows and the plastic vanes are cheaper. They are only shooting a 25lb BH longbow so the structural integrity isnt really the issue it may have been with limbs over 45lb. In your video, you say the BH isnt as good as the Sage for new archers, and harder to setup isn't really correct. A little bit of work with a wood rasp and sandpaper and the BH is a true 'past centre' bow. I haven't seen anyone do the 'modification' in a review, so perhaps you are interested? I know you shoot off the shelf, but squaring the shelf of the riser would also aid in that. PS, you do a great job with your videos. All the best and merry xmas.

Regarding noise, both the Black Hunter Longbow and Sage recurve are pretty loud. I have a Black Hunter longbow, and compared to your setup, I have to use larger puff balls and place them closer to the nocking point to reduce the noise, but it still feels loud afterward. My brace height at 7'' might be the cause. I don't live in a huntable area, and I've always wondered how quiet a bow should be to avoid spooking game. Anyway, thanks for comparing the two. I plan to own both before getting into custom bows.
@BigRigOutdoors
@BigRigOutdoors 8 месяцев назад
Most Black hunters like a higher brace height 7.5"-8" for most. Adjust your brace height a little at a time and shoot a few arrows after each adjustment to see if it gets quiter and use heavy arrows to help reduce noise as well.

I don't understand why most trad hunters keep all their arrows on a bow-mounted quiver. It just seems like a really easy way to lose or damage arrows. When I hunted with a mounted quiver on a crossbow I lost and broke many bolts, which are much much stiffer and shorter than my 31" trad arrows. Granted I hunt super thick bush which you have to hunt for a clearing harder than you do a deer.

I really do make a conscious effort to try to support American made products and to my surprise the majority of these wooden bows being sold on Landcaster Archery or Amazon are all bows made in Asia. The only true reputable American brand I know is made by Fred Bear and generally a wooden Recurve bow from them starts around $400 price point. Makes me wonder if there’s a genuine craftsmanship and quality difference from the cheap Amazon $200 Asian bows to something like a Fred Bear Traditional wooden recurve bow ? This is all stuff I need to do research on. What’s your thoughts on the subject is there a difference in quality and craftsmanship ??

It's more quality control, Ive bought a few bows over the year that have been as much as ten pounds off of what is marked on the bow there will always be a little swing poundage wise when buying mass produced bow usually 2-3#. I would disagree for the very reasons your stating. Beginners should learn the bow without all the bells and whistles. The Black Hunter is $70 cheaper, so if it turns out to be something you not into, you've got less money it. If people get to the point where they want quivers, sights, and fishing reels on their bow, well they are no longer beginners and would probably want a nicer bow at that point anyway. Spend $110 on the Black Hunter at 35 lbs and then step up in weight and gadgets if you decide it's something you want to invest more money in.
