I'm surprised about the Winsor and Newton Black India Ink not being waterproof, as I have never had it run on me in my watercolour pieces. I don't know if it's because I'm not running my brush over the lines like crazy or that I leave my inked pieces for a while before painting. Maybe the amount of ink you put on as another factor. I'm glad I know now. Maybe I'll experiment to see how far to push the Indian Ink.

Thank you Rachael- perhaps I'll have to try it again and make sure it's completely dry next time. Take care 😊

Yay I’d only just bought the “Dr” ink last week and I didn’t really know what I was looking for.

good comparison. Both are evenly priced and of similar quality. We need more India ink reviews please. Everyone is making fountain pen inks. No one is making these.

Thank you for your review. Sadly, the winsor and newton ink wasnt fast dry for me, using a dip pen. Others are better, in my opinion.

I use the pebeo black india ink. I've bought the ink in a 250ml bottle, because it's way cheaper than smaller sizes. I also bought some empty dropper bottles and filled them with ink. I've done this with some other inks and my Ecolines as well (I've the tendency to spill the ink all over the table 😣 so it's less dangerous 😊). And it's easier to travel with the small bottles than with the original ones😊. I usually clean my brushes with soap and warm water and never had an issue.

Several cleaning solutions; one:After flushing the ink out of the pen/pipette with water, flushing with one part household ammonia* and two parts water. Fill and empty the three or four times to dissolve the solids accumulation. Then flush the ammonia solution out of the pen with three or four more flushes with tap water.

Thank you SZ Hecht! I'll definitely be giving this a try! Need to source some ammonia first but hopefully that shouldn't be too tricky 😊

Lovely review and good information on these popular inks! I wonder if you could use them in a fountain pen if you emptied the pen after quitting? I know you are not supposed to use them in a fountain pens but have you ever tried? OH Paint Pucks in jars to clean ink from brushes I use 3. Keep up the good videos! Be safe and take care.

Thank you! I've used them in a dip pen but not a fountain pen as I think it would mess them up. Funny you should mention paint pucks this week...😉😊

A relative sent me a bottle of Winsor & Newton black India ink, some steel dip pen nib with a holder. I’m strictly a fountain pen guy, but I did try dipping them to write some. Eh, they make marks on the paper, and in a pinch, I could use them to write ... something down. My question is, How do you clean them? I rinsed them all off in water, tried rubbing the ink out of the channels with a water paper towel, soaked them for a few hr.s in Dawn & water. The nibs tips are clean enough, but if I were to use them with some other color, there still is some ink left over! What do folks clean these with? Fountain pens inks are not this stubborn usually... . What do people use India inks for? Drawing only?
@SarahNewburyArt
@SarahNewburyArt 3 года назад
Hi there! I usually try and clean the nibs as soon as I can by first rinsing under warm water. Then I take an old, small round paintbrush and rub it in an olive oil soap and use it to clean the nibs more thoroughly. This usually works but for really stubborn stains, I soak the nibs in some (olive oil) soapy water for 5 minutes before using the old paintbrush on them again. I dry them off on a paper towel and they good to go. Hope this helps 😊

I use the little paint pucks , have you seen them ? They work really well and if you even search here on YT you can find them. I put them in the bottom of my jars and I use 3 jars when using ink especially. 2 with watercolors I do keep a clear water vessel just for clean water no matter what medium I am using. I use a dropper or Pipette even syringe if I misplaced the others. In the past when I let the India ink dry on my applicators I have used a Brillo pad to clean my dip pens. I found the big disadvantage with these inks you better take you time and let them DRY!

I have the Winsor and Newton one. It felt thick and dried up fast on dip pens. I like the feeling of writing few calligraphy letters on my drawing with it. Compared to using fountain pens with pigment inks, it is very eraser safe. I have several Bombay inks of non-black colors. White is opaque and others are transparent, but all thinner than the WN ones. I like Bombay inks better for lesser need to clean dried up inks on drawing session. Also, they are said to be lightfast. I was surprised to find out non- black WN drawing inks are not lightfast. I have a fountain pen cleaner solution from Goulet pen company and it has ammonia in it. I use them for cleaning pigment inks in fountain pens. One can use Windex or pet odor cleaner. Dr. Ph Martin sells their Bombay pen cleaner and I think they might be similarly made. The other option is using rubbing alcohol. I store them in an empty poster color jar to clean during drawing. For brushes after drawing, I use General Pencil Company's The Masters brush cleaner soap. It says it cleans acrylic paints and seems to work as well.

@@SarahNewburyArt, your thanks for my compliment made a bad day better, so thanks back atcha for that. I also wanted to give you due thanks for the inspiration that your art gives me. I was looking for videos like this one after running across my old paintbrushes and Hunt 102 crowquill nibs in a box of not-even-I-knew-what-anymore, and getting an itch to start drawing again. Speedball and Higgins were the only India ink brands I'd ever used, and that was back in the late 1980s and early '90s, so my ancient memories of satisfaction with those two brands were not to be trusted blindly for purposes of deciding what to buy on a finite budget three decades later. I really needed opinions from skilled artists familiar with what's available now. Within the context of that search for current information, the delightful paradox of your cat silhouettes' stylized realism was even useful on a practical level, as a clue that your opinion warranted my consideration, because your style reminds me a little of my own -- or of what mine might've become, with a LOT more practice. So there's that, too, but my most heartfelt gratitude for your video has more to do with how the grace of your cats-in-progress reminded me of why I loved to draw. All I had was the spark. You provided the kindling.

Do you think it would be possible to filute the W&N ink to use in a radiograph technical pen? I normally use them and then wash the ink out thoroughly to avoid clogging, even with drawing inks meant for those pens.
@SarahNewburyArt
@SarahNewburyArt 4 года назад
Hi, sorry for the delay in replying .. I would recommend you get an official answer from Winsor and Newton as I have heard mixed opinions for radiograph technical pens. They are fine to use in dip pens and airbrushes but can clog fountain pens so if you were to try it, you would need to dilute the ink first with de-ionized water and wash them out thoroughly after use. I have emailed W & N before and they are pretty good at replying to questions. Hope this helps 😊

The Art Hive thank you! I’m always confused as to what is the difference between India ink, drawing ink, radiograph ink and fountain pen ink... I swear some use them interchangeably! I guess I’ll play safe and keep buying radiograph ink for the technical pens
