I planted black, honey and purple robe locusts last year and they were just tiny babies. I didn't think they made it through winter. I went out to scythe and they have all put on a ton of leaves and at least a foot of growth. I can't wait until they start producing.

Can green black locust seeds in their pods get as big as 7/8 of an inch in length? I would like to know because I want to eat some, but am not 100% sure of the identification. I know they are definitely not honey locusts because the leaves are much bigger than the ones found on honey locust, but have the same type of leaf arrangement. If these are not black locust then is there a poisonous look alike tree? The only reason why I am doubting these as being black locust seeds is because the green seeds seem a bit too big or maybe its cause the tree is a bit mature? any idea guys? Thanks!

What do you think about the thornless honey locust as opposed to the black locust? I’ve head the honey doesn’t have the nitrogen nodules but that the roots are still dense in nitrogen when they die back after trimming Just wondering if it could be an alternative or if they’re just too different
I have honey locust. Thorny as can be and the wood is not very rot resistant, so I can't use them for fence posts like osage and cedar. For example, I split cedar wood that had been in a brush pile 2 years and the it was solid and dry. The honey locust was spongy and rotting. I'm also not too convinced about the pedestal that permaculuturist place honey locust on as nitrogen fixer. I have hundreds of these things and I really can't tell a difference in the grass around the honey locust and the grass in the middle of the field. One thing they sure are good for is for making your tires flat. And the bees love them. The wood burn ok but a little sparkly if split and seasoned. I like ash much better to burn. I plan on planting black locust on my property. I haven't got a single one. But in my opinion, black locust is neck and shoulders above honey locust.
