I'm half Polish and one of the legends surrounding the Black Madonna of Częstochowa (and the two scars on Mary's right cheek) is that back in 1430, Hussites, members of a Czech protestant movement, plundered the Jasna Gora monastery where the famed shrine is located. When they attempted to load the shrine on the wagon, the horses wouldn't move. They threw the shrine on the ground & wielded two strikes of the sword on her face. When a plunderer attempted a third blow, he fell to the ground writhing in agony until his death. Despite technological advancements in rehabilitating old artwork, it has proven all but impossible to repair these scars.

That’s the first time I have seen the figure of Our Lady of Częstochowa. It’s a painting from XIV c , famous for the graces obtained through the prayers said in front of it. High school students go there on pilgrimage, before their final exams. However, although it is called the painting of the Black Madonna, it’s just very dark due to constant burning of candles and layers of vernier added during restorations.
I'm a Polish Catholic and I know a little bit more, than foreigners. It used to be a holy place in every aspect. There is very few good priests now. A lot of immorality among clergy is present there, too. The devil hates sanctity. Pray for this city! We must fight for Jesus and the truth!
