Johnny should have been up for an Oscar. He was lost in the make up and just everything. I think Johnny likes becoming lost in the character. Absolutely wonderful. His acting as always is great. Easily a scary guy.
Even if Bulger's character was a bit over the top visually compared to the real one, it wasn't a problem because Depp delivered what might be his finest acting job. The dinner scene (+grabbing the wife's neck scene right after) is just outstanding. He came a long way since 21 jumpt street.
Jim did some shit that was seen as good, in the eyes of the old school Boston Irish. But he was a weak person. Nobody with the resources that were handed to him, should ever have to, or ever should, turn into a drowning rat. I respect some of the things he did, and why he did them, concerning the situation in Ireland, but, even those motives come into question. I'm inclined to believe that he was just a selfish, greedy prick, who hid behind the false narrative of being on the good side of the Irish civil war, and was too weak to keep his head above water, without fucking over those who trusted him. Not a guy I would have anything to do with.
I basically agree with you. Hollywood glamorizes this type of thing, but in reality he was lazy, the kind of guy if you met you wouldn’t be impressed with. His brother got him a job working construction but after a year he quit, and went back to stealing. One can surmise from this that he felt honest, hard work was beneath him. Nevertheless it is still a somewhat interesting story; two Irish boys from southie, one becomes a criminal and the other becomes the president of the Massachusetts state Senate.
Absolutely amazing that this was prosthetics on him. In the movie you would never even know! Everything looked so natural and real! Great performance and transformation all around by Johnny Depp and the makeup artists
This movie was very much anticipated and you knew Johnny would be playing Whitey ..but if you didn't know much about Johnny Nd walked up to you I. Full makeup.you may think.he resembles johnny but he truly looks like a different person.... remember the actress who played Maryann.. his face was literally inches from her and she felt it was a completely different person staring at her.. the makeup for did an amazing job.. this was an awesome movie. I had no idea I would like it as much as I did.
Johnny Depp needs to go see a shrink if he claims Bulger was a "man of honor". He was a thief. There is no honor among them. He murdered and ratted. How in the world can he be a man of honor. Also, when I saw him in the movie, for a brief second, I thought I was watching Linda Blair in "the Exorcist".
@John Dough At the core of it all, a person is either honorable or he isn't. Human character does not pick and choose. His family and friends never tested his bounds. Overall, Bulger and honor were opposite extremes.
@John Dough I am not arguing. It is an interesting question about who we are as human beings. Can a man who may be psychopathic actually be honorable in any way. Do you not think that question interesting?
Man of Honor in a criminal mind.. Johnny perfectly understand the psichology behind the man and the respect that he puts in his portray gives the man a new light.. One of the greatest performances of Johnny
