Chapter 17: Interloper - Part Three
Freeman continues to make his way through the alien factory in Nihilanth's Tower, following a complex series of conveyor belts and jump pads transporting pods of Alien Grunts to the top of the tower. However, he runs into more Xenians as he progresses at every level of the structure, and is forced to deal with their numerous traps, ambushes and a deadly conveyor gauntlet as he climbs.

Notes:
The water at 1:26 is home to many Icthyosaurs, more than the 2 seen in the video - each section of the pool separated by land contains its own pair of Icthys
The Vorts in this chapter will not be provoked if not actively under mind control, even if Freeman shoots them (2:33)
The purpose of the portals that open at receptacles such as at 3:01 are to provide a means for Freeman to quickly return to his current point of progress if he falls down to the lower levels where he started. For instance, the 3:01 portal links to the one at 2:02 in the event Gordon falls down to the water
The jump that I did at 3:52 is, to my knowledge, not the intended path for the level. It is expected that players drop into the vent at 3:48, which leads into the map's first laser puzzle. However, I wanted to show Gordon's ingenuity and ability to think on his feet, which is why I opted to go for the "skip" (that and I was honestly sick of laser puzzles at this point). Regardless of the path chosen, both lead Freeman to the portal at 4:13
As opposed to what I did to jump onto the stamping machine at 5:20, Gordon can simply jump onto the part of the machine that drops to the floor (shown in the blue light at 5:15)
As shown at 10:47, breaking an Alien Pod (whether intentionally or due to the Controllers) releases an Alien Grunt without its armour or Hivehand. This variant was first encountered encaged in the opening moments of Questionable Ethics, and can only attack Freeman by charging at him
As shown at 11:42, many Vorts are in close proximity to the exploding green sacs at the conveyor gauntlet - this is why I actively avoided detonating them
There are multiple paths in the conveyor gauntlet (11:56) that Gordon can utilize to reach the end
As shown at 12:05, Gordon can shoot through forcefields, while the Controller's own attacks cannot
Freeman can get into the shower with the Vort at 14:18 to share the heals without having to kill it
Shielded Controllers, first encountered at 15:26, is a new addition to Black Mesa's rendition of Interloper
If Gordon does not kill the Controller that shuts the gate at 16:01 quickly enough, it will break the pods in the room to release the agrunts
If Freeman launches himself off a jump pad too close to an Alien Pod, he will receive impact damage from it
As shown at 20:54, the Tau Cannon's piercing abilities is very effective for destroying the shielded crystals (thanks to user requem90 for originally pointing this out in my 2019 video of the chapter!)
Unfortunately, Freeman cannot shoot through the forcefields containing the switches at 21:10 to disable the switch
Apologies for the lag at 25:06...this section of the game isn't optimized well and every time I look into the forcefield at 25:05 I lose frames. I tried to smooth this out as best as I can
Trivia:
Very rarely, the timing of the alarm and subsequent forcefields to jettison Freeman from the belt at 0:52 can trap Freeman against a Pod, crushing him
The sequence at 8:02 where Freeman must avoid security measures on the Pod is, in my opinion, reminiscent of a similar sequence in the game Doom (2016) where the Doom Slayer retrieves the BFG
The crystals that power the Controllers' shields at 15:26 seem to be the same crystals that power Gordon's HEV suit
Very often, any Alien Grunts that break out of their pods during the conveyor gauntlet at 10:26 will be killed by a Pod squishing them against the forcefields
It is implied that the three laser puzzles that Freeman has to complete starting at 21:18 are used to carve out new tunnels in the Tower
As seen very quickly at 27:12 as Freeman takes the jump pad up, there are numerous structures that can be landed upon if players jump back down off the ledge at 27:20, though they don't really have any points of interest and serve only to house the three chambers in the map
The area with the three gates at 20:38 will lock after Freeman completes the gauntlet, preventing him from accessing them again
If Freeman breaks an Alien Pod just as it touches the jump pad at 27:35, the Alien Grunt that is released will be instantly killed
Nihilanth's line at 28:30 is not in the base game, and was added in with the workshop mod "Restored Nihilanth Quotes", as suggested by user UGLIES

Just like with the prior sections of Interloper's alien factory, the conveyor section of Black Mesa's rendition of the chapter utilizes great art design to maintain the feeling that Gordon is in the belly of the beast - while the red haze of the Tower continues to dominate, the eerie green glow of the Alien Pods/Eggs as it casts shadows on the belts and tunnels of the factory is just as critical to this atmosphere. As well, Crowbar Collective's emphasis on verticality helps reinforce a sense of progression - every jump pad, lift and vent is one more step to the top. Once Gordon reaches the last room with all the converging conveyors and pods launching into the tubes, the layout of the area as well as the considerable distance travelled since he first infiltrated the tower provides a sense of completion - our hero has finally reached the end of the line. That being said, I am not a fan of the pacing and level design of this section of Interloper - it is my least favourite section of the game. My main criticisms of the pacing revolve around the repetitive nature of the puzzles, both in platforming and in dodging environmental hazards. Interloper is already a lengthy chapter, the aforementioned puzzle elements pad it out even more in my opinion. This close to the end of the game, I feel that the pacing should have steadily increased as Freeman gets closer to Nihilanth - instead, it slows to a crawl. As well, platforming is consistently frustrating as much of the terrain is too glitchy, tight and awkward to maneuver around. With regards to level design, I found that many of the combat encounters aren't enjoyable to play through. Take the conveyor gauntlet for instance (10:26). The player is forced to move forward to progress, but movement is severely hampered by the conveyor limiting their side to side or backwards movement, which is critical for dodging Controller Orbs. Long jump is also dangerous because of the instant-death pits surrounding the conveyors. At the same time, the player is assaulted by Controllers in the air, Vorts on the platforms, and Alien Grunts that emerge from the pod. Furthermore, there is little to no cover as players move forward. Combining all of these elements together in a single sequence results in a unbalanced and difficult encounter. Nonetheless, I do know a bunch of players who do enjoy this section for the same reasons I don't. I feel that Interloper's length is in part intentional to illustrate the scale of the Tower and the enormity of Gordon's journey to get to the top. Whatever qualms I have pale in comparison with the rest of the chapter, which I do really like. Speaking of which, I am very excited for the next and final video for Interloper. it really is a grand conclusion to Gordon's trek through the borderworld :)

I agree in parts. Too many puzzles in Interloper. I think the rule of 3 becomes too repetetive at this point. But the Crowbar Collective likes to overdeliver and cut short later for pacing. Together with the previous chapter, cut 1-2 cable puzzles, 1-2 pipe puzzles, 1 conveyor puzzle and 1-2 Controller puzzles. Maybe add a "what jump pad to choose" puzzle in the end so you don't lose the scale of the tower. I love the conveyor gauntlet. After realizing what to do, it got manageble and also it made me realize how they basicly designed these last sections like the citadel gameplay form HL2. But I realize how many players got problems with it. Remove Vorts from the conveyor gauntlet and increase the distance between force fields maybe? You played through it so smooth but I know how quickly this section can go downhill.

For me, the biggest improvement they could make to the conveyor gauntlet is just to omit the conveyors entirely from the battle - have the battles happen on the side or where there's more cover so that players aren't constantly fighting the belt when moving around.

@@Sexy_Nutella Removing what makes this fight different again... What happens here is, the game gets turned into a Rail Shooter while giving you infinite Ammo for the strongest and most easy to use gun in your arsenal. A Rail Shooter creates the same Problems as in "On A Rail" again. Movement is limited, so there can't be any exploration with side areas. Crowbar fixes this Problem with the Rail Shooter mechanic. You can switch conveyor belts but nobody wants to explore here. Everybody understands that this is not the time for exploration. I think the Rail Shooter mechanic is working fine. It only needs to gets rebalanced. Maybe increase distance between Alien Grunt containers?

@@DAS_k1ishEe I meant that the fights themselves should happen in zones between or beside the conveyors, where the player doesn't need to stay on the belts themselves so that they can move about to dodge the enemy attacks. I know that there isn't exploration to be had in this sequence, I think the biggest issue is the fact that there are so many attacks coming at the player from multiple directions and the player's movement is limited. If the intent is for a rail shooter, I think more cover is needed so players can reliably defend themselves if they can't dodge instead.

oooo that's a sneaky shortcut you got there around the beginning! the devs really nailed the feel of 'vermin-infested factory and the vermin is you' in this level, especially in the more cramped places also bump maps and normals go brrrr 😂there's so much detail in these visuals

A bit of personal trivia: The most difficult thing to record in this video wasn't the conveyor gauntlet. It wasn't even the three Controller arenas at the end. No, it was the damn jump at 3:52. I suck at platforming lol, can't count the number of times I had to restart from the beginning on an otherwise perfect run because I clip the edge of the conveyor belt.

Yeah... That looks completely like a luck-based jump or a frame/pixel perfect timing one, LOL... More with that weird hitboxes the structures have.

A joy to watch, as always! And that's saying something through one of the more tedious levels of the game. Those jumping agrunts at 18:00 remind me very much of the jumping pig cops from Duke Nukem 3D.

Thanks! A user by the name of requem90 first told me that the Tau Cannon can pierce through those shielded crystals when I did my 2019 run. I kept that in the back of my mind throughout the entire Definitive Edition run so I can finally do just that :)

What a blast! We've reached the top of the tower. You mentioned you disliked the conveyor gauntlet, it does NOT show. The way it's synchronized to the music (as always!) makes it a highlight of the chapter. I gotta be honest I did not expect this much extra content added to xen. It's truly massive. The sense of progression to the top really ramps up near the end with the huge leaps you gotta make. And then that final line: "The truth... you can never know... the truth...". It's the kind of writing that makes half-life storytelling what it is: You might be a player taking on a huge quest to save a LOT of people, but you are still a mere speck of dust in the grand scheme of things. The world of half-life goes far beyond the stories we've experienced so far. I love it. Can't wait to see your final chapter! Great job!

The shielded controllers can be seen as a foreshadowing of the Nihilanth shield puzzle.

This is an excellent walkthrough, good strategy. I haven’t tried Xen yet and I’m blown away by the beauty of this atmosphere of Xen. I’m now beginning to be guided by these walkthroughs but first I cannot stop watching your videos until the game is complete.

First of all, mad respect for getting through this part of the game so quickly. I took a long time to get past it on my first playthrough, and that was without having to worry about recording. Speaking of which, one of my issues with the conveyor section, especially the first Alien Controller encounter, is that there are no supplies and it's pretty far removed from any of the supply drops. I was out of ammo for pretty much everything except my 357 and Hivehand in my first playthrough, which (big surprise) meant I really didn't do well against an army of Alien Grunts and Controllers. I tried to just run through, but even that ended up being a real challenge with Alien Grunts being dropped on my head and surrounding me. I get that it's near the end of the game but I still feel like the devs went a little crazy with the number of enemies. I mean, Our Benefactors (which seems to be the main inspiration for Interloper) had a lot of Combine soldiers, but not enough to literally block players from moving. The lack of cover and always being under attack from all angles really doesn't help either. Even once the green crystals start appearing, the whole section just drags on and on. As you said I think the platforming and dodging/shutting down forcefields really gets old after a while. Even though the puzzles earlier in the chapter basically boil down to switching power cables and destroying pipes, at least there's a wider range of challenges in figuring them out and getting through them. Here it's just the same thing again and again. I honestly think the whole conveyor belt section should have been much shorter, probably just in one map instead of the best part of three, with more restraint on the enemy encounters. The other two maps should have had more unique environments, puzzles and combat. Personally I would have loved it if there had been more focus on freeing the Vorts. Anyway, I know it's been said many times before, but the final elevator battle was a massive breath of fresh air after all this. Good luck with it, I'm sure it's going to be a real challenge to record!

I was actually surprised myself that this didn't take as long as I had thought it would. I agree on your criticisms of the conveyor section - if it was up to me I would've taken out the last segment with the Controller arenas - we already had the 3-part puzzle back in Xen with the big tree, this element seemed the most "video-gamey" portion of the game for me (compared to how everything else seemed to be integrated into the in-game environment). It's funny how you pointed out that having to free the Vorts would've been a better idea, because that's exactly what I thought would improve the chapter as well haha. Make the entire conveyor section revolve around liberating the Vorts and the entire chapter becomes that much more interesting, because we really don't see what happens with them after this.

I've done the purple hat achievement. I basically ran through to each red bulb, put down the hat, shoot the bulb with the gluon gun, pick up the hat and continue. But like really fast. Surprisingly the worst parts of the purple hat achievement is the lambda core teleporters as they seem to launch the hat off the platforms regardless of how well you timed it and the whole on a rail chapter. There seems to be no reliable method to keep the hat on the cart and you can't hold it while activating the cart. Also you can't pick the hat up if it lands on the railings so I had to keep blasting it with the shotgun and catching it in mid air.

Actually, if you think about it, the Interloper B maps are the room in the original with those freaky-ass elevators & conveyor belts & the Interloper C maps are the room with the acid vats & grunt halls

Freeman works his way through the alien factory inside the tower, and would hop on multiple conveyer belts transporting boxes of alien grunts through the tower, gordon would fight alien controllers and alien grunts as they try to stop freeman, and he would solve puzzles to ascend more into the tower.

Since Bolloxed actually killed it instead of sharing a good healing shower next to a vort in the 1.0 edition (;3;) I yelled at him for that, didn't like it hahahaha. Ahhh... About this part of the game... The only part that i "kinda" liked was the conveyor belt fight and the three gauntlets of the controllers... Just for being some action... It was a pain in the ass to play, tho, but at least was something "exciting"... This part of the chapter was something like a ... Bruh... But, hey, you uploaded this very fast, i'm happy for that... Specially because there's this ascencion fight coming very soon... I am TRULY excited to see how you do it this time... I'm completely sure it will be your best recording... And by the way... You seem to be running out of ammo... That kinda makes you feel you're really at your own this time...

I just found out about being able to share the shower with the Vort because I really didn't want to kill it haha, it looked so peaceful! I'm also happy that this segment didn't take as long as I thought, lets me focus on the elevator fight itself. Me running out of ammo was definitely planned ;) I wanted it to seem as if Freeman is running low on resources, increasing the stakes as he gets closer to Nihilanth.

I was definitely a changed person by the time I got to the gauntlet at 12:04. I hate to admit it, but I was forced to use God mode, and we’ve got hostiles, surface tension, interloper, and nihilanth. This time, it was the a grunts. I don’t know if this has been said, but I think they move almost exactly how the Marines do, it was like the high security materials storage facility in chapter 4 all over again. And I was *_MAD_* by the time I got here. Watching what the nihilanth and the controllers have done to the vortigaunts, done to us, and all the trouble that the a grunts gave me… _Oh,_ I was changed. They had to pay for everything they did. On Earth. On Xen. So when I finally got to the gluon gun rechargers, instead of being all excited like last time, I said in a very dangerous tone “Feel. My. _Wrath.”_ Only the slaves lived to tell the tale of the vengeful hell bringer I became for them

I have to say, the one thing that I didn't enjoy about Black Mesa is the overly fleshy tones of the factory portion of Interloper. I've had this whole thing since a kid about getting swallowed alive and having nightmares from it, so while I played through this section, I felt like I was more uncomfortable than I was supposed to be. Didn't help that the entirety of Interloper overstayed its welcome with how long it is, but luckily CC kept it from getting too gross. Plus, the conveyer belt and elevator fights were such a great payoff to it all.

Quotes like that from the Nihilanth makes me think he must have been a threat to the Combine at one point. Kinda sad to know that he was the last of his kind, merely trying to escape those who enslaved him and find a new home (though ironically he also oppressed the Vorts haha)

@@Sexy_Nutella The Nihilanth already had shackles on when you meet him. He is being controlled to control the vorts. He is probably not evil at all. One can only assume it's the combine that enslaved the Nihilanth, but I like to think there are other races out there controlling races. In multiversal warfare I think the combine are essentially nazis/communists and there are tons of other races fighting them back and banning together to stop them, including humans. Gman is like the arms/ammunition dealer of wars but with black mail, soldiers, hypnosis, and timeline paradoxes instead of bullets/guns. He will employ his tricks and soldiers to whoever is the highest bidder, he doesnt care who wins. For all we know, Gman sets up wars so he can then profit off of them (arguably proven by the fact that he gave the xen crystal to black mesa, starting the domino effect of combine control in the first place). I think it was probably Eli Vance who paid Gman to employ Gordon for the resistance. His reaction when he first sees you "my god...it really is you" feels like he didn't fully believe the Gman when he exchanged him whatever he did that it would actually work. He probably bargained his daughters life for Gordon judging by the end of HL: Alyx.

I hated this part at first. It's so long and tedious if you don't know where to go but awesome when you do. I love this whole level now. This and Gonarch are so good.

I love Gonarch's Lair as well, and I'd say most of Interloper. I don't think I can ever truly love this portion specifically though, even on repeat playthroughs it's just a chore to get through for me personally.

I actually really like the conveyor gauntlet area, where you're blasting down Controllers left and right. It's a very fun section, especially coming off the dragging conveyor puzzle thing.I can understand that people might hate it, though.

It's alright for me, my issues with it are how brutal the gauntlet can be because of the limited space you have to fight the Controllers. That and the belt moving works against the player's movement.

I gotta say, I'm in the minority that just _adores_ this section of Interloper (and the ascension), because it really feels like right now is the part of the story where you show the Vorts that they were right to believe in you, to trust you, to have hope. This right there is the true essence of the story of Half Life. Throughout this disaster, and the next, and the next, you are not just an icon or a figurehead, but the physical embodiment of hope for a better future. That day might not come tomorrow, or next month, or within the next decade, but it _will_ come. You are Gordon Freeman. But you don't just free man.

If I recall correctly I think there is a "Half-Life 2 Remastered" in the works, from the same creator of "Half-Life 2: Update". However I don't think it will be a full-scale remake using Source 2 or anything like that. Still, count me excited for it :)

Check out Half-Life 2: MMod, if anything, it's Half-Life 2 but with modern shooter aspect of it, I'd actually rate it better than Black Mesa in terms of gameplay

So, remember what I said about how those previous 3 maps are the room with the multi stack elevators, the bunch of bottomless pits with the acid vat, & the beginning of that Grunt hall after the second map of the factory? Well, in much the same vein, these could be seen as an expanded version of the rest of that Grunt hall. The conveyor sections being moved here is most of the expansion.

I'm glad they at least did away with the claustrophobic Grunt halls if I'm referring to the same location as you. In HL1 there were Controllers and Vorts everywhere in those hallways.

I love Doom 2016 (even more so than Eternal)! That being said I don't think I will upload a playthrough anytime soon, that game on the hardest difficulty requires insane coordination, something I don't have yet haha. Though I do love the flow of combat.

I remember these teleporters. Sometimes, if you put the hat or pizza through and then went through, you'd get teleported inside the model of the hat/pizza and get stuck. It needed a particular momentum or angle to get them through safely without giving too much of a push and sending them back over the cliff again. Did I mention this took eighty hours to complete?

Good progress! I thought the final elevator won't make it into this part though. I like how this part of Interloper is reminiscent of Residue Processing and the Citadel in HL2. The Conveyor belts, machinery, getting trapped. Also that alarms go off, the xenians know that you are in there, and they try different methods to deal with you. Head on confrontations, ambushes, traps. Really immersive. What's not immersive are the video gamey things, like the teleport checkpoints. And the linearity, everything is just in your way, the solutions fall into your lap. And yeah, the chapter is too damn long. Maybe they'll tweak it a bit, cut back on some puzzle areas. So, the end is near, probably next video? The Ascension part and then Nihilanth? Any plans on future videos? What game to tackle next? After a well deserved rest, of course :)

It's an open ended quote. What I took it to mean was that Freeman really doesn't know the full scale of what he's wrapped up in. At this point in time he still isn't aware of the G-man manipulating the course of events, or that the Combine will eventually invade. Nihilanth is alluding to his lack of knowledge of things to come.

I too got major Doom vibes playing through this the first time, though I believe the concepts for Black Mesa's Interloper Tower preceded Doom 2016's release according to a dev.

@@Sexy_Nutella That's fair enough! Though the ironic part for me is I've never played DOOM (not the oldest, nor the newest), only snippets of videos and images and it still made me say "Damn, this feels a lot like doom", I think it's because of the amount of red in this level

@@BadgersDen Definitely, that and the laser trap where Freeman stood on the egg is very similar to a certain sequence in Doom 2016. If you are interested I would highly recommend the game, the gameplay is hugely satisfying and fast paced :)

I personally think this section is a bit overhated, people say it's tedious and boring, but it really isn't, if you prioritise the controllers that are controlling vorts it's not too big of a deal. People just suck at thinking.

I am not a fan of this section myself, and it's to do with how overlong it is, and the level design just isn't there for me personally. That being said I don't go around saying that people who do enjoy this section "suck at thinking". I think you should perhaps consider that players don't have to enjoy a level just because you do and vice versa.

If making Xen as whole less tedious than in the original was a goal with this remake, I sadly cant say they succeeded. This part was so boring and franky all of interloper is. Very much fizzles out any momentum you have going in, especially after the Gonad fight and the chase with the gargantuas
