@MrPornogoregrinder Considering that Venom's Welcome To Hell album was released 3 years before the 1st Bathory album, That pretty much makes Venom the origin of Black Metal. Early Venom was without a doubt the 1st wave of BM!!!
I have some point to share: 1. Venom has an album called "Black Metal" that's all... the sound of the black metal was created by Bathory. Those type of vocals, those arrangements with keyboards and acustic guitars were created by Quorthon. 2. Black Metal has a lot of styles, Melodic, Symphonic, Raw black metal, thrashy grim black metal etc. No one can just take a simple variation and said that is the only true black metal.
Mortiis seems like a really interesting person. He's such a down to earth guy, has a lot to say about black metal, and speaks the best informal english I've ever heard any European black metaller speak.
Die Kreuzen, a Milwaukee based Hardcore Punk band formed by kids (back then), sounded more like Black Metal in 1982 with their Cows & Beer release than Venom did in the entirety of their career...
venom is an extreme metal band they should be honored that their term was used to name an entire branch of music who's only lyrics were half inspired by them
Ive been a fan of the genre since early 90's ..even so..im not in to anything to either say nay or yay to any opinions etc on subject..i liked the comments in this vid..twas entertaining..and that is what its all about..
well, the classics: old dark throned, gorgoroth, belphegor ,limbonic art, keeps of kalesin, the true Mayhem ,emperor, Satyricon, immortal ,dark funeral .And there is this wave of bands who experiment with differents sounds, still, they are really good anorexia nervosa, the amenta ,Anaal Nathrak, samael, arcturus (my fav) ,Aborym, Ihsahn There are lots of them, I hope you like'em, enjoy and keep up the sick music!
There were two waves of black metal and the fist wave included Venom so Venom are black metal. The Norwegian stuff didn't come out until the second wave
does it matter who was first personally i will always like bands like mayhem, darkthrone and burzum but we can't deny the extreme metal bands that gave inspiration to the fans that became motivated to go for the extreme and dark music we now call black metal i will argue though that venom seems to be somewhat harsh and crude to say that black metal was their idea entirely for a lot of people probably wouldn't even care if it wasn't for the black metal scene in the early 90's
@Tettuli black metal is nor defined by ideology. black metal as any other music genre is defined for how it sounds and you can't compare dakthrone to venom. completely two different styles. and as the most rated comment said : "venom is thrash metal".
@lugwalder Chuck did get asked that question about starting death metal and didnt consider himself the creator of the genre. dude was a humble guy like quorthon who i believe started the black metal sound. the good die young.
There are quite a few high quality Black Metal bands in America. The Cold Beyond, Black Witchery and Profanatica to name just a few. Von started it all for us in the U.S. I could care less how the rest of the world looks at us from the Black Metal standpoint. US Black Metal will remain in the underground where it belongs, and we won't give a flying fuck how many Mayhem or Bathory T-shirts are sold.
@garistotlekc Well, Cronos(and Venom) were the co-founders of black metal along with Mercyful Fate, Bathory and Sarcofago. Is there mention of Mercyful Fate? Quorthon?
Thx for the upload. I don't blame Cronos for distancing himself from the norwegian stuff. It's crap. The only good black metal was the first wave stuff...celtic frost, bathory , venom. Stuff which had memorable riffs, variety in it's sound and orginality. "Under The Sign of the black mark" will always be the best black metal album.
I have to agree with what Venom said. The only thing the later black metal bands such as Mayhem and Emperor had in common with Venom was the Satanic lyrics. All those bands are still black metal, but they did steal Venom's term. Also, Venom deserves more respect as a legitimate black metal band.
Underoath's early music is my favorite type of black metal-ish music. Well, I guess you could say it's unblack metal because it's Christian but I was talking about the sound
@DomentorTheOnlyTrue Gorgoroth Nattefrost Marduk Arckanum (OK, not Norwegian, but still Scandinavian) And plenty more. If you think that Venom are heavier than any of these I just don't know what to say.
@louiscfc93 Like I said, I read an interview where he said he liked precisely 15 genres of techno. It's like he draws an incredibly vivid line between what he will listen to and what he won't listen to. He seems just as pedantic and narrow-minded as every other black metaller.
"i took this russian guy out because he's extremely boring" - :) And this is what I respect you for, mate :) By the way, very good material you made. Congrats!
coining the name is one thing but to me, Bathory created the real sound of black metal as it is now.Venom is good but they definetley arent good enough to go about making comments like that
@DomentorTheOnlyTrue Are you sure? I could list plenty of Norwegian bands that are heavier than Venom. Also, just because a band came up with a phrase, it does not mean they get to define it/determine it's usage. See Minor Threat and "Straight Edge".
@TheNickhoofd i think when they say they believe in satan, its a bit different. They dont mean in a physical satan. I remember Gaahl from Gorgoroth explaining it very well.
I do not understand what your point is..Yes, pop music is populair in the USA, but that is worldwide...The trick is that you can find great black metal bands all over the world...And I do not mean bands like Dimmu Borgir, no the underground bands like Inquisition, Black Witchery...Ofcourse Scandinavian countries has great black metal acts, but hey they are not the only ones. Black metal is certainly not exclusively scandinavian..Over here in Holland we have great acts to like Cirith Corgor...
bathory was the first black metal band! venom are fuckng heavy metal, similar to motorhead. true black metal bands - bathory, burzum, uruk-hai, darkthrone, mayhem, von, blasphemy.
Dimmu Borgir. Best black metal band ever. and dont give me that crap that they went mainstream and are symphonic metal now. They are symphonic black metal.
@ignoranttwat sure, it's their very own style of metal...their own brand. norwegians are either norse, corpsepaint, viking, or just snow metal...good point by Cronos! 1st Immortal album tried to sound like Venom. Evil & very Heavy. that's closest to "black metal". all others are "evil but weak". Venom is still heavier than any of those norse bands today.
i hate how venom kinda mocks the norwegian black metal scene because without the norwegian bands, almost no one would give a fuck about venom today. hell, the way i found out about venom was when i heard cover done by mayhem.
@DomentorTheOnlyTrue its cool man, i understand wat u mean but the thing is im nt rly a big black metal fan infact most of the metal i lsn to is stuff like black sabbath, judas priest, nwobhm, thrash and early death metal and bands like celtic frost and mercyful fate who i cant rly think of a subgenre to put under
hi! for the last few years, I have become interested in history of metal (espacially the Black metal scene). I've got few video documentaries and I'd like to buy "Lords of Chaos" also. After watching this video I think that Bill Zebub did a great job! He also even more inspired me to do as much research as I could on my own. Even tough we live in internet era, some informations are very hard to find. But enough of the introduction, I was really hoping to better understand this Movie...
i think venom was ok back in the day, but i beleive Bathory was a thousand times better than venom ever was, and Mayhem with dead on vocals was amazing.
venom started before bathory so venom are the kings of black metal and can say what black metal is. bathory are just the poineers plus anyway bathory and venoms sound was similar to start with except for the vocals and maybe drums but it was pretty much the same sound.
@ignoranttwat heavy album from Norway is De Mysteriis from Mayhem. it's a big difference between this & f.ex. Pure Holocaust...which is just fast & evil... no crushing effect...just evil & weak. can't name any other album from Norway that's "heavy", besides 1st Immortal. maybe Enslaved Frost & Eld too... but neither is heavier than Venom for sure. so, hope you get my point now.
@LivingdeadMetal No man you got it wrong here, Venom is a mix of all the metals, they went to norway and those bands created their own distinct sound. Since venom sais black metal is no particular metal they are being hypocritical
It's ironic, because Cronos says, in Sounds of the Beast, "....that guy Quorthon is a dick. I mean, he's doing what we were doing on Welcome to Hell. It's ridiculous!" Small world we live in, but imo, I think Cronos being an arrogant prick complements his bands status for somehow doing all these things that they did. He's a pretty straight forward, tell-it-like-he-sees-it, loud-and-proud, rude showoffy guy, so for him to say what he says is basically what he feels, nothing more nothing less.
@DomentorTheOnlyTrue well im glad we have some similar tastes....ya CF are definitely thrash or atleast on the first 2 records or so..and Mercyful Fate i figure ur right, since i first lsnd to them bout 4 years ago i liked to think of them as playing like ur classic style but jst a little heavier..i dnt get the ppl commenting on Mercyful Fate vids saying they're black metal, i rly dont c the resemblance except mayb in lyrical content =S
@Szaam doesnt matter anyway.people like what they like and thats pretty much it.i said that american death metal musicians are more narrow minded and while they probably are it doesnt matter either
@altmegido Well, I ask because it is advertised in the Reality Check TV website with te title "Black Metal: The Most Evil Music in te World" or something like that...
