And your engagement in the comments is just as helpful as the video; humble, but clear & assertive & authoritative in your answers w resp. to the topic at hand (& on RU-vid! ...This area is normally reserved for vitriol...?!) This video is awesome - thank you so much. I really appreciate you breaking up the learning with "tiers", i.e. progressing up to more challenging examples. I just started getting into metal/death metal, so I'm in the process of beginning at easier groups (Death), and hoping to work my way up to more challenging things after I get the fundamentals.

Great advice! What I struggle with is transitioning between strings, especially when I do an upstroke on one string and then try to go to the next string without doing one more downstroke (if that makes any sense). I guess I just need more practice. Thanks man, your videos are really helpful!

I struggled with tremolo picking for ages. Still not amazing at it, but significantly better than I was not long ago. 2 things helped me tremendously. 1. Find tension in your body and kill it. Start picking fast, doesn't matter if it's sloppy. Now look for any tension. Clenching teeth, curling toes. Anything. Now stop playing, relax that part of your body and start again. If you do this enough eventually you'll find yourself completely relaxed while playing and the picking will come effortlessly. 2. USE A METRONOME. Seriously. It's like magic. Start at 60bpm. Once you've played the part perfectly 5 times in a row, increase the bpm by 10.

Hey Dev. Great lesson, thank you! Is it a bad practice to keep my palm on the bridge while tremolo picking? I mean keeping it in the same position like when I am playing palm muted riffs. I really struggle with string skipping when tremolo picking, and I think this might be the reason why. Although keeping the hand away from guitar is so unnatural to me.

Hey Dev, I have a question… my axe is an ESP LTD EC 1000 deluxe, 24.75 fret scale…. I am trying to set it up for black metal, and I wanna know what you recommend as far as string? gauge and action height? I know in this video you recommend the 10- 46, but with my model’s scale length… would that still apply to my guitar as well, or would I be better off with a higher gauge.. this(metal picking) is new to me and I want to optimize my gear so I can make progress… plan on playing in E standard or D… would really appreciate your input… thanx man
